Well I am thrilled to report that the little dark feathers showing under the skin on the top of my oldest crestbred chick are pointing the wrong way!!!! Definately a crested, now to see what happens with the other two :)

Congrats! Cant wait to see pics, that's something we dont see often here, development pictures of crested babies :)

okay, I'll get onto it now then  I don't know how well the pics will come out at this stage as the feathers haven't even broken the skin yet but I'll see if I can get something :)

Well I took a photo but I don't think you can really see anything on it as my camera isn't much use for close ups but while looking so carefully trying to take a photo I did notice that at this stage it looks like the feathers are going to be a perfect full crest, every feather is pointing away from a perfect point on the middle of his head :)

Thats great news :) I will bet that has just made your day  Terrific result.

Yep, definately made my day  Now I am going to spend the next few days impatiently waiting to see what the other two turn out like!

My budgie club has said they will be interested to have some crested babies at the show, even if I'm only competing against myself :)

Woot woot, I am over the moon too.... and they arent mine and I wont even be able to visit Lol!!

How cool, cant wait for feathers

Hey MB that's GREAT! :(

I'm tempted to find a pair of crested, just so you will be able to have a running mate so to speak. If I did do that, I would probably end up with weirdo looking crests, I find I either like the look because they can sometimes look like little "punks" in a cool way :( , but then you do also get the ones that just look like they've got something wrong with the feather ontop of their heads :rip: . I am also very interested to see some photos as soon as they start to feather up properly. Anyway I also have my fingers cross for its siblings.

The crested gene is a funny thing though BL, sometimes those ones with the weirdo crests can breed beautiful babies and vice versa, I have been warned that it can be a frustrating gene to try and play with. It's exciting to know that in the next few weeks I'll have at least one cute little crested baby :rip:

I've decided to name the oldest baby Punky :( If anyone has suggestions for the other two Id love to hear them, I'm thinking singers with big hair, etc for inspiration :(

Well done MB!

I'm so impressed, crests are way too complicated for me! I admire you're tenacity. :rip:

I think it's more luck than tenacity Renee :rip: This is my first crested pair so I am just thinking myself lucky that they have given me a nice crested baby so far, any more cresteds in the clutch will just be a bonus :(

I'm hoping it is a sign of good things to come :(

wow MB I am very pleased for you. It isn't every day that you come across crested budgies. And to be able to breed them wow! Congratulations. I look forward to seeing your many 1 prizes!!

I do hope to have a whole flock of them in the future but for the moment I have a single pair (crested cock, crest bred hen) and a little pet type cock. The babies from this clutch will be put to large normal (uncrested) birds next season in order to keep size up and I will keep these crest bred babies for future breeding. By next breeding season I should be in my new house with my proper breeding set up so I will have the space to be able to have a really good breeding season then :rip:

Thats great news MB. 3 babies at least split for crested will give you at least a starting point. And with a constant supply of normals you shouldn't have any trouble finding partners. Any reason why you didn't breed the 2 parents with normals this time round?

  • Author

One parent isn't crested she is a normal crest-bred which is exactly the eventual pairing I want to be using. After these guys have a clutch I will probably breed the crested guy to a normal hen for one clutch this season too

I am glad the pair worked out for you, see it's the gift that keeps on giving!

I can't wait to see the pictures, and I think we can be sure you will get a 1st in one of the club meets.

I've decided to name the oldest baby Punky  If anyone has suggestions for the other two Id love to hear them, I'm thinking singers with big hair, etc for inspiration

How about Punky, Spunky and Monkey!?

If you are still coming to Perth next year I can introduce you to some crested breeders over here

You are doing the right thing MB,By breeding crest to normal,if you want to show them,if you breed crest to crest, you will breed only small birds.breed your best crest to the best crest breed & build up your stud that way. Will look out,for your crests at the sheilds.

I will be putting them in the end of year UBC class at my club if they are showing during the break up meeting, otherwise it will be the first meet of next yer before they get benched and then we shall see how they are looking :P

well if your thinking punk MB , you would be hard pressed not to call one cyndy ( lauper ) lol . cant wait to see crested baby pics

 Oh MB, What exciting News

I hope they turn out just perfect for you mate :(
