Posted October 20, 200816 yr We have been talking to Cosmo a fair bit, as well as clicking the tongue and wolf whistles and other noises. Every other time I've taught a male budgie to talk, it's taken the good part of a year at least. So I am not at all expecting Cosmo to even be slightly close to talking this year. But there have been quite a few times now where I have heard that kind of pre-imitating noise, you know where you kind of think it's the sound you always make but you're not quite sure yet if it is or if it's a coincidence? I have heard him make noises that sound a lot like our tongue clicking, and also in the same kind of tone as the wolf whistle. I'm quite sure it's a coincidence or else he already knew how to make those sounds so we just happened to be copying him rather than him copying us if you know what I mean. But yesterday we had friends over, and he really enjoyed the noise everyone was making, and was chortling away, and one person whistled at him... and he kept whistling back exactly the same way. It wasn't mimicking like how they actually learn to sound like your voice etc, but it was definitely responsive. So it made me wonder -- maybe he really is deliberately copying some of our sounds? I'm sure actual talking takes a while, but he couldn't be copying whistles and clicks already right? We've only had him a few weeks and he's still a baby. Would love to know your opinions. I don't have my hopes up because as I said, I didn't expect to be having that "hey did you hear that? was it a whistle or not?" moment for many months more.
October 20, 200816 yr Smokey was a baby when we got him, and was wolf whistling and making kissy noises within two or three months of coming home. He's now been with us for six months and says: "what are you doing", , "I don't know" , "Hello", "hello Smokey" and "Funny boy". There are heaps of other things he says which sound like words and phrases, but we can't make them out. We talk to him a lot, and leave the radio on for him while we're out, so he's always hearing human voices... don't know whether it really helps or not, but he certainly enjoys music!!
October 20, 200816 yr The more bonded they are to you the quicker they tend to talk. You will hear it before anyone else, so its most likely that he is starting to mimic
October 20, 200816 yr sounds like things are progressing quickly at your place. Good luck with it all.
October 20, 200816 yr Author Yeah that's what made me think it's just a coincidence -that everything's going a lot faster than I expected lol. Oh well I will just keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens.
October 20, 200816 yr That is cool, I believe that too the closer or faster they bond the more they will mimic you because you are their budgie person . Now you just have to get it on video so we can all enjoy it. I am still working on that with Merlin
October 21, 200816 yr Author Well my husband thought he heard a wolf whistle today, and he's probably more likely to be skeptical about it so it seems more and more likely! Cosmo is really good at chatting along and responding to our voices as we talk to him. My other birds used to go silent when we talked to them and then as soon as we pretended to look away they'd go noisy again.
October 21, 200816 yr Husbands are last to hear it, I know with Merlin and Pretty I heard it first kind of like toddlers you understand them and everyone else says what
November 1, 200816 yr Hi , this sounds like my baby budgie aussie we have only had him around 7 weeks so he is about 3 months old , but it really sounds like he is making the clicking sound , wolf whistle and is saying good boy . I also think that this is really quick as our last budgie was around 5-6 months old before he started talking . I do spend time talking to him every day though , and even my husband says it does sound like he is talking . We shall just have to carry on and see what happens , maybe they are just quick learners jo
November 1, 200816 yr each bird is different but I believe some are so interested in mimicking they do pick it up very quickly, first they pick up the whistles and then go from there.
