Scaley Face

Featured Replies

HI there,

I think that a couple of my budgies might have scaley face

What is the treatment to get?

I have a powder called external parasite powder, which says its for all caged birds..... For fleas, mites and lice.

Do i give them this?

It says to just rub it in to their feathers

Thanks again

 by the way i love the new emoticons :lol2: :chickendance:

Can you post a photo please???

Personally i don't like the powder insecticides. they get everywhere and can be irritating to the lungs. a spray is much better.

HI thanks for that,

Mine look worse, man i feel bad for not seeing the roughness earlier

I only noticed the scalyness today.

These things happen, i have a hen who got it recently, it can really sneak up on you.

You'd be better getting some ivermectin to treat it. Oil isnt always as effective on more advanced cases

I use Moxidectin to treat my whole flock every 12 weeks.

The only reason my mind ticked over when I noticed it was because I have had a budgie in the past who had it. On that occasion it was a fair bit worse before I noticed it and thought something was wrong, because I didn't know what scaley face looked like and thought that perhaps he had a bit of dry skin or something on his cere. It wasn't until I saw someone else's post that I realised he had scaley face. It was easy enough to clear up though. Don't panic!

They are not very good but i think you get the idea.

He's not too bad, you can treat that with oil. apply to the affected areas (including feet) twice a day for about 5 days

Most medications are available from bird shops, vets and fodder stores

what sort of oil?are you sure theyre not too bad,i see some other peoples scaley faces in the earlier stages and then i look at mine and i think whoa thats bad, i feel so bad for not treating it earlier will they be okay if i apply the oil!!!What sort of oil1st photo and 3rd photo is oliver,2nd and 4th photo is a different bird limey.

You can use any kind of cooking oil - olive oil is great. Just (naturally) keep it out of their eyes etc. Apply with a cotton tip in a thin layer. It will smother the mites and they will die - It's a good idea to repeat in 2 weeks or so to kill any eggs that may hatch.
