Posted September 25, 200816 yr I am doing my rounds today and I notice that Blue is not in his cage (Blue is the daddy of my month old babies) So I freak out because if he got out then the dogs could have eaten him or he could have flown out the open door. I know he was in there last night when I went to bed so I am crying and I move the Bubs and Flame in their cage outside, I put my treat bowl on the top of the cage and I am calling and calling. I start to feel like it is a lost cause and sitting on my back step in tears as Blue is one of my semi tame guys that use to live inside with me. Then something lands on my shoulder. It's Blue! I very quietly move him to my finger and then into the cage with Flame and the Babies. I lock that cage up tight (Bread clips and twist ties) I still am feeling so sick about the whole thing and I can't believe that he came back! Now I am wondering they are not due for Ivermectin till another 3 weeks but should I do him earlier? Would it be safe to do the babies as well? Still in shock that he came back!
September 25, 200816 yr He flew back to you from out in the wild? That's awesome! I had a couple excape a cabinet last week when Bob forgot to slide the door down fully (a greywing grey and a cinnwing yf2 sky opaline spangle hen) Left behind 4 chicks in the nest But mine never came back I'm glad you got him back, although I'm unsure if he should have ivermectin, if he's already had his dose he should be protected by it until he's due for his next one
September 25, 200816 yr Author I know, pretty much any other bird and I think that would have been that. I think he heard Flame and came back for her but WOW I am so going to buy a lotto ticket today Thanks I was thinking he should be covered but not 100% sure so thought I would double check here before I double dosed him.
September 25, 200816 yr Since the ivermectin can be a little fume-y and he is going in a nestbox, I would forget about using it for now
September 25, 200816 yr That is amazing, you had an angel looking out for Blue, you and his little family. Glad he is safe and sound, did you find out how he may have gotten out?
September 25, 200816 yr WOW AV! Thats great to hear Warms my heart. Ivermectin is a wormer that they use in stock. Do you guys use it in birds too? Should i be doing it? What about the big resistance debate to ivermectins?
September 25, 200816 yr Author That is amazing, you had an angel looking out for Blue, you and his little family. Glad he is safe and sound, did you find out how he may have gotten out? Yeah Harley has taught him to open the cage but I locked up all the slidding doors but the cage he is in has a swing breeding box door on the side I figure that he pushed that open. Did not think that he could have done that so everything is locked up tight now. WOW AV! Thats great to hear Warms my heart. Ivermectin is a wormer that they use in stock. Do you guys use it in birds too? Should i be doing it? What about the big resistance debate to ivermectins? I use a drop on the back of my birds head/neck once every three months, guards against mites and worms. You have to get the stuff from a bird dealer or a vet as it has to be mixed right otherwise it can be two strong. What is the Big resistance debate to ivermectins?
September 25, 200816 yr I'm glad he's back! So the little ones will grow up in a full family before the adoption
September 25, 200816 yr That is an awesome story. AV. Doesn't that just warm your heart. They say if you love something let it go and if it comes back then it is true love. awww Ivermectin. Well the resistance thing is similar to resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. By using any drug that kills an organism, you still have the chance that one will survive and because he survived and none of the other bugs did, he has no competition, so what does he do? He breeds and breeds and breeds and passes all his resistance genes on to the next generation and the cycle continues. So continual low dosing is not a good thing to do. Treat them for parasites when they have them generally.
September 25, 200816 yr Author Thanks SW. I normally treat them every three months if I can catch them! But really they only get a does if I see an issue or they are coming into the breeding room to go down for a round and when I first get them.
