Posted September 23, 200816 yr Ozzie smashed the first egg his hen laid today I'm gonna get some fakeys incase he does it again but otherwise...
September 23, 200816 yr Grrr don't you hate that... especially when you want it so bad , it is always the bad things that happen to the good one ... Hope that the next ones isn't scrambled
September 23, 200816 yr Author Yeah, I caught the little monkey in the act too so I know it was him. I'm thinking about taking him out when she is about to lay her next egg and then fostering the egg and putting him back after I have taken the egg out. He was really quick as I had only checked the box a couple of hours beforehand
September 23, 200816 yr Author Another hen laid an egg today so the next egg can be fostered to her if I get it in time to increase the chances of getting atleast one or two fro him
September 24, 200816 yr Maybe you should take him out on the day that it is due, just to make sure he won't get at it. Then replace it with a fake egg, mark the real one, toss it under another hen, wait until it hatches then put it back in with original mum!
September 24, 200816 yr Author That's what I was thinking SW. The cage they are in divides down the middle with a wire divider so I'm going to slip the divider in tomorrow morning and seperate him into the other half. That way they'll still be with each other but with bars in between. It will be like they're having conjugal visits
September 28, 200816 yr Author Well good news so far on the egg front for these two. I fostered out the second egg to a hen that seemed reliable and she has taken great care of it for me. They laid a third one today and Ozzie has been in the nest box but it is still intact, so fingers crossed
September 28, 200816 yr *does a happy dance* You know I think I would be thinking that if I got a baby that looked like Ozzie then I would keep him as a pet!
September 28, 200816 yr Author There is a good chance we will AV since his hen is a green spangle and he is a DF green spangle I'm trying to track down a cinnamon spangle hen as his next mate, so keep an eye out for me
September 29, 200816 yr Just wait I think I have ones of those! Hmmm trying to picture Lucy in my head... Hold on Nope not a spangle, will keep an eye out for you.
September 29, 200816 yr Author Not a spangle but she might do the job as we could get spangle babies anyway. We could give them a try and you could take any non-spangle babies and I could take the spangle babies (or we'll work something out if they are all one or the other)
September 29, 200816 yr Well if you want her then she is yours. She is currently in molt and her partner that I picked out for her I think is a hen not a cock so that's not going to work. So yeah if you want her she is yours to borrow. The only thing is that she has the nail issue so you have to make sure she has her cerment post and keep an eye on her nails but since I have her a cerment perch she looks after them fine.
September 29, 200816 yr Author okay, well it won't be for a little while as he is doing well with his current hen now, might let them go for the moment and keep her in mind for later down the track if something else doesn't come up (I don't really want the opaline so she isn't ideal)
September 29, 200816 yr Opps sorry forgot about that! I will have a chat to Ivan and see if he can flag any that come in for you
September 29, 200816 yr Author It's cool, I can still use an opaline if I have to I just have to becareful which chicks from the pairing I keep for future breeding (since cocks will be split for it)
