if the tail is long does that mean its a boy or is the only way to tell by the cere? thanks

Tail length means nothing with regard to sexing a budgie.

The best way to sex budgies is by the cere. Although I have noticed males tend to have a slightly longer tail, but this is not a reliable method to sex budgies.

The tail has never been a way to sex a budgie. Overall if you looked at hundreds of budgies and worked out their size and the percentage of tail component you would find sexing by tail length not in the slightest way helpful at all. Princess parrots ...the male has a longer tail than the female. BUT not in budgies

hehehe Tail length seems to change with the size of the budgie. it would be as hard as trying to tell gender of a human by the size of T-shirt they ware.

Agree you could NOT be 100% correct if you were to sex a budgie via the length of it's tail - I have noticed though

that age can play a part in it but that is just me and my birds

Well in a sense you could sort of sex a person by their t shirt size. Men tend to wear larger t shirts, like male budgies tend to have longer tails. It is such a small discrepancy though that you can't notice it very easily.

All my males, especially the bigger, manlier males have fairly long tails and all my girls have short tails. Arkady had a really long tail.

Yeah, just looked now. The tail feathers from my male birds tend to be longer, by maybe a centimetre.
