Posted September 22, 200816 yr To give you an idea on bush budgie size, my hen is about 22 grams (shes a little underweight), and the male is 25-27 grams (he is in good condition). These weights would be super small even for a normal captive australian budgie. here is a picture as well. http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p40/jwa.../P1000742-1.jpg Edited September 22, 200816 yr by **Liv** Image changed to link beause it is over 640 by 480.
September 22, 200816 yr okay not the best picture but you get the idea. Infront is a show type/english Budgie In back is a bush Budgie Bush Budgies (MB's Pair) You can also see the difference in the head shape
September 22, 200816 yr That's it, I'm gonna go hook them out and take a proper photo with the three different sizes Back later
September 22, 200816 yr Author hehehe we have started something now. Maybe there should be an FAQ about the different types of budgies with pictures. (unless there already is one heheh)
September 22, 200816 yr A few people have asked what the real difference in size is between the original nbush budgies, pet types and show types so here you are: Unfortunately I was having alot of trouble getting them to sit next to each other nicely but as you can see it's amazing what a century of domestication can do to a species.
September 22, 200816 yr Had alot of wild budgies out where I was working a few months ago- they dont sit still long enough to get a picture of but! Heres a photo I took a while back of little pet type babies with my show baby, there was only about a month difference in age.
September 22, 200816 yr Oh the poor pet type babies I am sure they are feeling very short comparied to the show type!
September 22, 200816 yr I feel sorry for the show type, poor baby must think he is a freak he's not, he's beautiful just the way he is but you know what kids can be like
September 23, 200816 yr lol nice pics but you forgot to add and english budgie in the mix Show budgies and English budgies are one in the same
September 23, 200816 yr sorry but they are not even close to the same , English budgies are smaller than a show bird but bigger than a pet bird and I have about 10 of them they are far from show birds.
September 23, 200816 yr 'English', 'show', 'exhibition' are all names for the bigger buffier birds- they do throw smaller birds sometimes but show breeders sell these off as they are no good for the show bench or to breed from. I like to call them english or exhibition birds but it confuses some people. Show birds are originally from english stock and thats why the name- english. Those pet type were small though- more bush size.
September 24, 200816 yr Author I agree with the pie! All of the big boofy bugies are called "english budgies" but obviously not all english budgies are good enough to be "show" or "exhabition" budgies. "pet/aussie/normal" budgies are those that are not the big boofy english budgies. But they have been domesticated (hence different colours sizes etc). "bush/native" budgies are those that have been bred in the wild or are direct descendants of a pair that have been bred in the wild. They only come in the standard green colour. They are also ALOT smaller than the pet budgies. The have very fine features with large eyes.
July 14, 200915 yr What is the average weight and body length (top of head to vent) of an adult show budgie? And at what age do they reach their mature weight please? I have some young ones whos caps have broken but barring is still close to the cere, just weighed them at 35 grams. They are in quarantine, I only got them this week, I think they are a bit underweight.
