Posted September 17, 200816 yr My Bird Cage! does the position of the breeding box count? my birds hang out in the top left corn facing abit of the side of the box and abit of the front.. will they realise they can go in and out etc...? ? theres the cage above Edited September 17, 200816 yr by budgerigarsherewecome
September 17, 200816 yr Your birds will work out they can go in and out. Few questions. 1) how is the breeding box secured? 2) how will you check the breeding box and clean the inside? 3) most importantly - why are you breeding budgies? the last question is not a personal attack, please do not take it that way. I think that it is a question we should all ask ourselves. I would love to breed budgies all year round, but I don't. I breed only a select few pairs a year. Maybe that will increase one day when I have a better set up and all, maybe not. regardless, the third question is an important one.

Answers to your questions; lol! 1) the box isnt that secure but if i see it on the ground i will make it secure. 2) I get inside the cage by opening it from the bottom, the birds don't escape because they love me. lol! 3)I love budgies and i want to see there cycle. Also i would like abit of cash from it. =) will he birds breed regardless of age, as i dnt no ho old they are also. Can they like dis-like each other as we humans do? September 17, 200816 yr Oh, okay well lets hope that the budgies aren't in that nest box or heaven forbid eggs or babies when you see it has fallen on the floor and has squashed one of them ... Don't you think that you should secure it first!!!! Bit of cash - Oh mate when you get money from breeding budgies let me know how!!!! As money is spent on seeds, and nutritional extras, up keeping of my birds - But If you think that you will get alot of money - best be rethinking mate! IF THEY BREED AND HATCH AND SURVIVE - $10 a baby! Not alot when you think about the time and effort it take to breed and raise them! Also they can only breed 2 times a year ( THIS IS RECOMMENDED FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF BUDGIES ) So all in all IF THEY LAY EGGS AND THE BABIES SURVIVE YOU WILL LOOK AT $100 for the babies in a YEAR! That is $8.30 a Month !!! I am sure you will spend more then that on them
September 17, 200816 yr Answers to your questions; lol! 1) the box isnt that secure but if i see it on the ground i will make it secure. Ditto to what Neat said ...........anyway, budgies will NOT use a wobbly unstable nestbox 2) I get inside the cage by opening it from the bottom, the birds don't escape because they love me. lol! You need to be able to have readily available access to the nestboxes to check daily for eggs and twice daily once chicks arrive...also to check if the hen isnt stuck in the nestbox EGGBOUND. Read this http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...&artlang=en 3)I love budgies and i want to see there cycle. Also i would like abit of cash from it. =) :hap: will he birds breed regardless of age, as i dont know how old they are also. If you dont know their age for certain you should not be breeding them !!!! Can they like dis-like each other as we humans do? Edited September 17, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 17, 200816 yr I am just wondering what is covering the sides and roof of the cage, it looks like plastic in the photo to me but maybe i am wrong.

Not the greates plan... to WAIT for it to fall! 2) I get inside the cage by opening it from the bottom, the birds don't escape because they love me. lol! Regardless of this, they can still fly out. I know people who have had hens fly out of an aviary WITH chicks in her nest box... never to return again!!!!! 3)I love budgies and i want to see there cycle. Also i would like abit of cash from it. =) GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!!!!! will he birds breed regardless of age, as i dnt no ho old they are also. Can they like dis-like each other as we humans do? I know you're really excited about having birds and want to breed them, but I'd highly recomend you wait until you have your cage set up (following our advice), wait until your birds are old enough (if you don't know how old they are, wait another year), and you have read up and learnt about breeding. There is a lot to know!!!
September 17, 200816 yr im amazed (dont take this the wrong way)..do you realize that the "cage is on the lawn-no bottom to it...! plastic all around...! unstable box...! you really dont have any idea what you are doing-do you? someone in your situation,my sugestion ...wiat for a year till you know what you are doing..heres some ideas 1. get a better cage 2.secure boxes 3.know the ages of the birds 4.realize there is no money in it..just love 5.be responsible 6.be prepared for sick birds look at the posts all over the forum...dont jump in thinking you know what to do-always ask someone here what to do-looking at the photo ..well i shall say,way stunned that you are even considering to breed birds best of luck-keep us posted.. September 17, 200816 yr Author You guys hate me no offence yeah? My parents pay for the seeds and there needs! The money i get out of breeding goes to me. I know its not a lot but i can stop nagging my parents to buy stuff for me; more responsibility! No offence to you guys but everything i have to post there is a multitude of replies that are negative, rarely any positive. For example i know a person this old man who gave me these budgies for free; he has about 50 budgies right if he sells 40. That equals about 40 times 15 dollars= $600. Now he has 10 left they will breed in spring about 4-5 eggs that's another 40 budgies. Then he is back to 50 budgies and he can sell them again. he might get back maximum i say about 300 dollars in food; so he gets 300 dollars profit a year; not quite bad considering you just take care of them which is fun and you can play with them!!!!!!!!!!!!! spelling please use spellcheck before posting so that your posts dont have to be physically edited by staff to be able to be read Edited September 18, 200816 yr by KAZ

You come on here asking for assistance, we give it and you ignore most of it. Breeding budgies is NOT A MONEY MAKING HOBBY! As to you saying you receive rarely any positive comments... we are all giving you advice and assistance AND encouragement, it's not my fault you don't like what we are saying! Why did you join if you're not interested in our help????
September 17, 200816 yr There are horrible places called budgie mills. where like puppy mills, the animals are bred to death with no care and purely for money - i dont want to see this happen to you. if you plan to sell to petshops you will only get about $2-5 per bird depending on colour If you plan to sell privately, than you will have advertising costs, and then a whole bunch of strangers calling you and traipsing through your home all the time. Personally I feel you have the wrong idea about breeding budgies WE ALL breed for love here! Not one of us make a cent from our birds. some of us may break even on good years, but otherwise its a hobby that costs a lot of money with lots of love as the gain. You are young and we dont hate you - we are nice people, promise We are only trying to help you and your budgies stay happy and healthy.
September 18, 200816 yr The thing is like the others have said WE HAVE ADVISED YOU ... You listened when it came to the first frame of you mini aviary .. But since then you haven't .... This little aviary is: Still on the ground with no protection from mice or rats ( which WILL get in there) Still don't have mesh on all sides you have substituted with Shade cloth WHICH WILL GET EATEN You have put in a nestbox hoping to breed babies BUT IS NOT SECURE You said you had no support from your parents but Now they are buying your seeds - YOu are young and sound like a very strong head boy But you aren't looking at the picture the right way Think long term - It does sound easy breeding - Add a nest box and Poof - Babies .. It isn't that easy at all - You need to read more? and don't get so defensive we don't hate you just ( well I am annoyed) annoyed that you do not listen to what we are saying to you ..... But you look we can't tell you what to do .... So you do what ever you want to do .. But when things go wrong Don't expect me to help you out! You have been told and advised and etc so now i will wait to hear the OH NO's ...PLEASE TAKE IN WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN ADVISED ... ------------ Sorry if this is harsh, But of late the young members here seem to be so RIGHT about everything and us experienced breeders that have been there done that are trying to tell you so that you don't have to go through all the bad stuff that we had too ....
September 18, 200816 yr No one hates you mate. We're all here to help your birds have the best quality of life possible. No one is shutting you down, but is showing concerns behind your reasons for breeding and you set up as it seems unsafe, that's all. As stated above, birds can not be bred to make money. They must come as a hobby before any thought of money should occur to you. Treat them as a computer gamer would treat a new game... it's just money to spend on something they love to do, don't expect anything back I agree, nest box should be secured down, even if it has to be on a pedastool and nailed down, then atleast it's more secure than perched ontop of something waiting to fall as the last thing you want is a nest of dead chicks when the nest box fell and mum refused to feed them. Have you read up on all aspects of breeding? Proper nutrition etc. Perhaps remove the nest box for now, do some more research and then continue breeding at a later date when you know how old the birds are and can provide them and the chicks adequate care. It's heart breaking when things go wrong with breeding and you're the one at fault and we don't want to see that happen here, that is all.
September 18, 200816 yr Also, potential buyers will be less likely to buy birds from someone who has thrown stuff together. If you invest time and effort into improving the husbandry of your budgies, potential buyers will feel more at ease buying from you. Budgies bred too young will not mature properly because they are putting more energy into breeding than growing and developing. This means they will make less babies in total over their life time anyway. Because the reserves they should have been creating while they were growing are not there. They also put less energy into developing their immune system properly and thus will get sick much more faster and much worse than they normally would. This would mean that you will actually lose money becuase you will have to pay for more vet bills. This is all proven. Farmers have to deal with this reality everyday with their livestock. If you want to make money, I would advise you to get a part time job, at least you will earn something in the region of $150-200 a month rather than 8 dollars. I bred my budgies two years ago. I still have all the babies, but I have the room for them and some money saved away to look after them. I have not bred since, because it takes so long and I do not have the time or space to put into breeding them now. It takes about 3-4months from mating until you have budgies that can be sold. You have to have enough room to hold them as well as their parents and any other clutches they have. Parents can sometimes attack their babies too so you need another cage to hold them in once they have left the nest etc etc. You also must realise that all of your budgies may not get sold and what will you do if you have one that is born disabled? With younger parents, the chance of disabled babies is higher. No one will want to buy a disabled budgie when they could have a healthy budgie instead. So what will you do with disabled babies? We are trying to save you from heartache. Edited September 18, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
September 18, 200816 yr For every one you sell at $15.I dare say you will sell 4 at $5.00.Iam the auctioneer at a poultry & bird auction each week.On average I get $4.50----$5.00 for budgie,So young fellow, don't count your cash before you get it :
September 21, 200816 yr Did you get my PM that I sent you nearly over a week ago offering to post you some wire for your cage? You are getting very upset about the advice and help being offerred to you when all people are doing s trying to make sure you are your birds are as happy and healthy as possible for as long as possible. Had you taken me up on my offer when I made it you would already have the wire and no one here would be getting upset about the use of shade clothe would they. The reason people are getting cranky is that you are asking for help but when people give you help you get upset and don't want it.
