Posted September 17, 200816 yr Roxy's feathers are looking scruffy and the blue pigment is going from them. Her tail feathers are also looking chewed. I have one budgie in the aviary with the same looking feathers on her tummy but her tail feathers are fine. I do not think it is mites because she is not scratching at all. Also if it was mites would not the 2 inside budgies that she is playing with at night have them as well. What could be another reason for it. They have been like it for a few weeks now.
September 17, 200816 yr Those are stress lines. Take her tail feather and curl the tip over to the base of the feather. If it breaks or bends with out bouncing back to its normal shape, it means your bird has either nutritional deficiencies, has been stressed (nutritional stress most likely) while making the feather or has been ill. September 17, 200816 yr WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish i kept mine now ...... to try this ... Deb - roxy still eats her Night cap ( budgie starter)
September 17, 200816 yr Author I was thinking it could have been nutritional because she has become a fussy eater. when i started weaning her was when the feathers started changing. She is still having her night cap because she does not eat enough seed or vegies during the day. When she goes through her first moult will the feathers improve.
September 17, 200816 yr She needs additional protein for her feather development. I am using powdered whole egg and others are using powdered soy...something like that can be hidden in her food.
September 17, 200816 yr Author She needs additional protein for her feather development. I am using powdered whole egg and others are using powdered soy...something like that can be hidden in her food. I have tried mashed egg in her vegies but she did not like it. Where would i be able to buy powdered whole egg and would i mix it with her rearing soft mixture.
September 18, 200816 yr Author I went to the pet shop today and was looking at budgie products and talking to the bird expert. She was saying that nutritional deficiency can be caused by the gut not absorbing the nutrients and maybe i should try adding probiotics to her mix. I also saw omega3 & 6 nutitional supplement and it said it was used for better health and plumage condition. What do other members think of these products and would they benefit Roxy with her feather condition?
September 18, 200816 yr maesie here for Deb (couldn't be bothered logging out and back in) Roxy is on NEST MATE. The only details on th packet says protein 21%, Crude Fat 17%, Crude Fibre 3% and min salt 0.5%. No other information is listed... so how do you know what vitamins it contains???
September 18, 200816 yr Feather development needs protein ......best is egg products. Moulting aid that helps in birds feathers might be worth putting into her mix.
September 18, 200816 yr Neat here for Neat Hope you both are having a blast see you on Monday ... Ohhh, I though she was getting Budgie starter? which contains the omega in it ....
September 18, 200816 yr Author Does anyone know where i can buy powdered egg from, i went to a health food shop and supermarket today and could not find it.
September 18, 200816 yr Does anyone know where i can buy powdered egg from, i went to a health food shop and supermarket today and could not find it. We had to have it shipped into W.A. from over East too. HUGELY expensive product
September 19, 200816 yr Oatmeal, Peas, Soy, Brown rice, Grains, Lentils, Multigrain bread - these are high in protein Maybe a powder form of these will be a cheaper alternative then egg powder?
September 19, 200816 yr Author I am going to try mashing a egg very finely and mix with her rearing food and hope she does not notice.
September 19, 200816 yr good luck, if you have a blender you could try that so the egg is mashed finer ...
September 19, 200816 yr Author good luck, if you have a blender you could try that so the egg is mashed finer ... I used my hand blender and got it to look the same as her usual mix and she ate it. Yeah! Her crop was full so hopefully she will eat it again tomorrow night. Hopefully over a few weeks i can reduced the amount of rearing food i add and she will be eating just the egg.
September 19, 200816 yr Try to use 2 eggs :hap: The more protein the better - SO i have been reading :hap:
