Posted September 17, 200816 yr Don't look here for approval!!!! Breeding Budgies under age isn't a good thing to do! Why you ask - Well lets state the obvious - They are young and aren't mature mentally to lay, incubate and raise young - THAT WILL ALL SURVIVE!!! Then there is the Physically part - Baby budgies bones and muscles are still growing and forming and developing! So you say , Well where do you think the eggs come from ??? The eggs that they lay are produced from their own calcium .... So I'll just add more cuttle bone in there ... WRONG ANSWER MATE! The calcium comes from their little bones and muscles so you are taking away all that they have just so you can get a few eggs, that may not even hatch!!!! It takes ages for the calcium absorption to take place ( vets will correct me on that one ) BUT budgie need vitamin D3 to help in the absorption of the calcium!!!! and this isn't found in any fruit or Veggies!!! The best thing to do if you want to breed is to BUY BUDGIE OF THE RIGHT AGE!!! Otherwise you will end up with a Dead Budgie on your hands !!!!!! I am so tired of hearing about people breeding budgies that aren't of the right age! You are basically giving them a death sentence - Maybe not right away but in the Near future!!! Wonder why your Hens can't lay eggs when they are 2 -3 years old ... Think about the impact that breeding them at the young age has caused their little bodies!!!! Young Hens are prone to Feather plucking ( due to boredom) Don't feed young enough! or often enough! Which leads to dead babies and all the babies and PARENTS will end up Malnourished ... because they are getting their own nutrients .... Seriously re consider the breeding of young! I am sure that you or your daughters wouldn't like to be mothers at the age of 10 !!!! Imagine the toll pregnancy has own our bodies! Now times that by 15 and you can see why we get so defensive when it comes to breeding young hens ADDED to FAQ along with directing members to this post for the discussion Edited December 8, 200816 yr by Elly
September 17, 200816 yr Thankyou Neat Why is it that people who are breeding too young budgies or trying to breed too young budgies still expect us to get mushy over their eggs and chicks ? Why is it that these same people come on here...ignore EVERYTHING told to them and then still expect us to be interested in their topics, answer in their topics or expect us to get excited with them for possible babies ? Why is it, that people breeding budgies too young and who are also ignoring EXPERT advice here seem to dismiss us an the IDIOTS because we fail to either agree with their choices or we fail to get enthusiastic about their breeding plans ? This forum is one of the very best on the internet in the world for great advice and a myriad of experts. To dismiss the advice and help given here makes YOU the breeder of young budgies the idiot.
September 17, 200816 yr Author Totally Agree Mate! There are plenty of other Sites to talk budgies on - BUT NONE OF THEM have the vast range of experience like we do !!!!! It is important to understand too, that when we do make suggestions that we are doing it to be KIND .. As the saying goes CRUEL to be KIND... We (experienced breeders ) have been there done that - with at least 1/2 of us not having the support of BBC or other breeders behind us . So we tell you these things to save you VET BILLS, LOSS OF BIRDS & HEART BREAKS ... Please listen - we are here to advise you , Help you and support you - But if you chose to ignore our advice - We will say I TOLD YOU SO! ( well i will )
September 17, 200816 yr Repeatedly ignoring good advice and not answering the BIG QUESTIONs will result in fewer people looking in your topics or even bothering to answer in your topics.
September 17, 200816 yr I would like to second everything that has been said in this thread And I'll third it
September 17, 200816 yr Quadruples it! I'd also like to add, that a budgie under 12 months is still maturing. By getting them to breed you are making them put the energy they were using to grow and mature into breeding. This results in smaller budgies, with less mature bodies. This happens in cows and heifers that are bred too early do not grow as big as other cows that were bred when they were older. This means you end up with a less robust animal, one that could not put as much energy growing up into its immune system, and it's health. These animals will also not produce as well in the future, be it chick raising, numbers of babies made (or *chuckle* milk and meat production in the cows, lol). Also, just because they have chosen to breed does not mean you should let them do it. If you had a 14 year old daughter, she might want to and may even engage in it, but she would be nowhere near mature enough to raise a child both physically and mentally. September 17, 200816 yr Author Thank SW - I was waiting for a little Vetness to this I was sure that there would be side effect from breeding young that I wasn't aware of .... Smaller Budgies - Explains it all!!!!

July 27, 200915 yr Thankyou Neat Why is it that people who are breeding too young budgies or trying to breed too young budgies still expect us to get mushy over their eggs and chicks ? because thats the type of cowardly people they are Why is it that these same people come on here...ignore EVERYTHING told to them and then still expect us to be interested in their topics, answer in their topics or expect us to get excited with them for possible babies ? Good question...Why?? (please see the sarcasm) Why is it, that people breeding budgies too young and who are also ignoring EXPERT advice here seem to dismiss us an the IDIOTS because we fail to either agree with their choices or we fail to get enthusiastic about their breeding plans ? again, they are ignorant, selfish people This forum is one of the very best on the internet in the world for great advice and a myriad of experts Too true Kaz.... To dismiss the advice and help given here makes YOU the breeder of young budgies the idiot. Kaz and Neat, you guys are geniuses WHAT is the POINT of having budgies if you arent going to give them the quality of life they deserve.. there is NO reason why you should be taken care of all well and be it top-notch health when your bird cant have the same happiness. its simple and plain..DONT breed budgies at a young age.... P.S i know its no good to have budgies colony breeding (as birds do breed young) ever since i joined this forum because, like kaz sai, its the best budgie forum in the world, and i intend to remove nests asap from the cage...

The part about colony breeding is not true at all. Common sense would tell me that any budgies under the age of 1 years are in a separate aviary, away from all boxes.
October 26, 201113 yr I know I'm only new but I'd like to say our beautiful budgies all deserve happy healthy lives. No-one should breed them young. Edited October 26, 201113 yr by Kaitlyn
August 31, 201212 yr They breed at 6 months of age in the wild. True, but keeping birds in captivity has a lot of inherent differences then what budgies find in the wild. For instance, in the wild, they have to be able to breed quickly when the weather conditions are right, and then they are limited by the weather as to how many clutches per year they can have. In captivity, the conditions are good enough that they could breed nonstop year round, and breed themselves to death. So the owner has to assert some kind of controls, including waiting until they are at an optimal age. And one year old isn't really a magic number. Maiden pairs can be failures both before and after 12 months.
