Posted September 13, 200816 yr help me something is wronng with my rainbow lorikeet! I woke up this morning to hear him banging and crashing around in his cage. I let him out, and he is flapping frantically around the room, attacking himself and breathing heavily. PLEASE HELP IM FREAKING OUT
September 13, 200816 yr On this forum we are advised not to give advise about the health or anything else expect budgies, it states it above. I do feel though if he has not calmed down that you should phone for vet. Maybe he just had a fright but it could be more like a seizure that is very serious. Also if you do a search for lorikeet forums I bet you will find one dedicated to the species.
September 13, 200816 yr Author thanks elly. i think he was choking. Anyhow, he passed away about 10 mins ago. :hap: :hap: We were frantically calling the vets, and they weren't open, and their after hrs number wasn't working. I am devasted he really was my BABY
September 13, 200816 yr so sorry, I am sure you did everything possible, thisngthat are just uncontrolable, he may had a stroke :hap:, :hap: big HUGS to you. Edited September 13, 200816 yr by Elly
September 14, 200816 yr Author thanks heaps for everyones support. I miss him terribly. It hurts so much inside. I hated watching him, knowing there was nothing I could do to help my best mate. I feel sick. He really was my baby and he loved me as I loved him.
September 14, 200816 yr Author thanks everyone. From talking to a few people, I found out that he had a stroke. Apparently these arent exactly common in Lorikeets, but not hugely rare either. I really miss him. I will definetly get another hand tame bird, I just got so much out of him and he was always there to make me laugh and cheer me up on bad days. Im thinking of a Sun Conure, as I still have Nitros cage. What do you think?
September 14, 200816 yr Sun Conures are very loud. Maroon bellied conures are quieter, I also think they are cuter.
September 14, 200816 yr Author okay thanks for that SW. What about Indian Ringnecks? I am very fond of them, particularly blue and grey, and they are also about $350 cheaper than Conures. I think they might be the way to go, but does anyone know the cage size requirements for them? Thanks
September 14, 200816 yr A dying bird always looks like its having a stroke so I seriously doubt it died of stroke. You really need to know what caused the death and a vet has those answers. Is this the bird you only got in June ? Wouldnt rush into buying a new bird until you have answers.
September 14, 200816 yr Author yes he sure was the bird I got in June. I cannot figure out what happened, last night he was perfectly fine, squawking away like usual. About 6:45am I woke to hear him banging around in the cage, so I leapt out of bed, and let him out. He flew down onto the ground, and was panicking really badly, like doing little frantic short bursts of flying, squawking like he was in pain and bending his head backwards and was making gasping noises like he couldn't breathe properly. I grabbed him, and it was like he didnt know me, constantly trying to get away from me. Ran down the hall to Dads room and screaming and crying, told him something was wrong with Nitro! We called the vets, but they were not open and their after hrs number wasnt working. I was just sitting with him wrapped up so he couldn't injure himself by flying frantically, while Dad was ringing other vets but they were all shut and all of a sudden, his gasping got louder then there was no sound, and I looked down and he was dead. Im devasted. It was so hard sitting there watching my best mate fade before my eyes. RIP Nitro I miss you my mate. Im not getting another bird for a while. Even when I do, it will never replace Nitro.
September 14, 200816 yr i hate to say it Bird_paradise But Nitro didn't die from a stroke, that is clear fitting behaviour... When was the last time this bird had been fed? was it cold where he was housed? If neither of those are the cause I highly suggest taking it for an autopsy to see what it was exactly that killed him, but lack of food is the most common thing to lead a bird to fit when nothing else seems wrong.
September 14, 200816 yr Author He had food when I put him to bed. I suppose he could have eaten it all though. I offered him an apple, and he licked it, but didnt want any lorikeet mix. It was about 18-19 degrees where he was being kept.
September 14, 200816 yr You are young and it seems to me you are trying to have all these birds and feed them all based on a small amount of pocket money. Diet for Lorikeets is of paramount importance, they take specialised care as compared to many other birds. Maybe cut back on your bird quantities and pet responsibilites until you have some extra money saved for special foods and for special needs like vet fees. Before you have said you have run out of food with your birds and I am concerned you are trying to do too much with not enough resources ( money and time )
September 14, 200816 yr I'm sorry to say Bird_paradise, but i'd have to agree To me, by the sounds of how Nitro died it was lack of food and i too worry you're trying to spread your resources too thin. As Kaz said, lorikeets are expensive to feed and need a very specific diet to keep them going. Even lack of food for just a short while can make them drastically drop their condition and even more so when all the sugars in the foods they eat are used up as energy against the cold. I'm not trying to blame you or anything, but i really do feel this was due to lack of food Once again, sorry for your loss
September 14, 200816 yr Personally I would go to a vet and find out. I spoke to a few people I know who have larger birds and they all said that it sounds like he choked on something but withou opening him up you will not know. I have heard that they can hide buttons, bits of earing etc... for days and then play with them one time and you have the issues.
September 14, 200816 yr He wouldn't be using up so much energy if he was hypoglycaemic. Sounds like he was in pain to some degree. Get him necropsied, so you can find out what is wrong and if it is something you can fix, to get it fixed for next time.
September 14, 200816 yr Author okay. thanks everyones suggestions. I had plenty of food for him thanks Kaz and Libby. I may be young, but I am perfectly capable of looking after my birds. I have checked his food dish, and it had alot of food in it still. It was not cold in the room. I think he choked on something, thats what I thought from the start. I always research animals before I buy them. I am getting alot more money now, and I ALWAYS have time for my birds! I am homeschooled so that helps too.
September 14, 200816 yr You said once you have a mouse problem as we often do. Is there any chance the mice can go through the food and contaminate it ?
September 14, 200816 yr I don't suppose anychemicals might have been sprayed near him, were any neighbours spraying herbicide late yesterday or anything like that?
September 14, 200816 yr Author Nope, no way any mice could have gotten near him and no neighbours were spraying. I keep him inside thats why the the mice couldnt have gotten to him. Thanks for the help
