Oh LIV ....

I just gave him a bath ....... The Vet hospital is ages away - and well I can't get there now ;)

I remembered that I had Ivermectin the New birds which are still in quarantine so I got them out recorded the leg ring No

and gave them a drop of Ivermectin, But the kids aren't in bed yet ( bad move i know ) i go distracted and squirted more then i shoud have .... I put him ( Memphis) in the cage and noticed where it was wet was BALD!!!!! Nothing i had seen before - Then all the feathers on me and the floor .... I freaked out came here posted if I can overdose went back and re looked at him .... I have just finished crying -

Then i noticed his tail feather!!!!! HE HAS MITES!!!!!! I am glad that I Ivermectin when i did but I should have done it first thing when i got them ..... This could explain alot of things ...

Probably he has loose feathers because of the mites and they simply came out when you had to hold him to give him the dose. You would have to put quite a bbit on before you overdosed him ;)

If you have washed it off and he HAS mites, i would give it to him again as he needs it.

Kaz, Does it look like mites ?? or possible FM ??? I had concerns about FM yesterday

Neat I hope everything will be okay!!

Ivermectin works by paralysing the parasites. It does not usually cause this in vertebrates because of the blood-brain barrier. If for some reason the blood brain barrier was compromised (inflammation I guess) then ivermectin can get into the brain and will cause paralysis. This happens in collie dogs as they have an inherited defect which allows Ivermectin into the brain. The paralysis isn't permanent. As long as the animal does not die from not being able to breath they should be able to metabolise the drug and clear it out of their systems. This is what happened with a collie dog was was paralysed for about 6 days (he was on ventilation to begin with I think) and then the affects slowly wore off and by about day 14 he was back to normal.

Your budgie looked like he had a really bad mite problem. Poor little dude. But he should be fine.

I have accidentally overdosed birds Neat & so far it has never effected them, even when you give a normal dose the bird can seem irritated for a short while, but soon gets over it. Those feathers are damaged by feather mites, I’m not sure that the Ivermectin will kill them, as it works by the mite eating the birds blood & that type of mite only eats the feathers. Also the feathers don’t look good quality, which could be partly from the mite damage, or a genetic or even the birds diet. You may need a spray or dust to remove them mites, or you could buy a low irritant fly spray & place the bird in a small cage like a show cage, have a cover ready then spray in the cage for a few seconds, then cover the cage for about 10 minutes & then later remove it, that should treat the mites, I have used that for treating canaries without any ill effects. After that I would let the bird have some peace, as you don’t want to kill it with kindness, remember stress is very bad for birds, especially in a new situation.

OH MAN!!! NEWBIRDS = NEW PROBLEMS ....

okay The birds diet is Seeds It is made from elenbee bird supplies - They finally ate veggies on Wednesday carrot's, sum choy and corn - he is a heavily feathered bird -

i will get some mite spray and spray both of them toss out the perches and replace too ...

now can we get the mites from them ??????

changed motes to mites

Feather mites are easily treating by spraying the bird with A.I.L Avian Liquid insectide. Safe and easy to use and available at most bird stores.

poor boy. What a mess the mites have made. He looks like he will be a really handsome boy when his feathers come back healthy :hap:

Poor baby hope it all works out for you. FYI I have had Buddy tip half of bottle of Ivermectin on himself and me and a quick wash and he was fine.

I hope it all works out Neat soon for this little guy.

I am sooooooo disappointed in my self it is not funny AT ALL!

This should have been the first thing that was done once , they were settled from buying them a few weeks ago -

They were wormed and had other meds during their quarantine BUT I FOR GOT THIS ....

So I went yesterday and got spray as I really couldn't do the fly spray thing -_- I don

t have the heart to do that incase I do something wrong.

They got treated the cage did and all the perches did too ( was pouring with rain) couldn't get new perches yet )

They are due for the Mulitvits this week - so I am hoping that his feathers improve, more I will take photos today. as I think there is improvement ON THE SITTING on his feathers now as they aren't soo scruffy looking ...

So this could be a Karma thing which has me more annoyed then anything as it was only the other day i noticed him looking scruffy!

But i hvae bragged about how healthy my my birds are and how i haven't had a problem in a ling time - Tsk tsk NEAT!

So I'll get this fella back in to healthy condition : D

Don’t blame yourself Neat the only thing you did wrong if you can call it that was not to notice the feather mites, but you probably haven’t had that experience yet, then you noticed it & have done everything right now that’s all you can expect. If you have sprayed the cage & will do it again, I would say three weeks is a good time, as that’s about the time eggs hatch, if they are good perches they should be safe. Re the fly spray I recommended as a cheap spray, it’s not a problem, it’s the way Canary breeders used to treat air sac mite before Ivermectin came along, the birds had to breath the spray into their lungs to kill the mites & Canaries would be weaker than Budgies I would think & I never had any die. But now with Ivermectin it’s much better & permanent as the air sac mite as the name says, even gets into the air sac in their bones, which the spray could never reach, whereas Ivermectin does & completely removes them & often they don’t need further treatment if the mite isn’t introduced again.

Oh mate...don't beat yourself up over it. At least you realised something was wrong and posted it here WITH photos for help. As Norm said, unless you know what you're looking for, it's probably not that easy to pick. I don't think I'd know! He'll be fine and will turn out to be a strapping young man!

I used to attend poultry shows and many of the chook breeders used to give their birds a good spray with homebrand bird spray :budgiedance:

homebrand bird spray :budgiedance:

Whats homebrand bird spray ?? :budgiedance:

Ummm...yeah didn't get much sleep last night. I meant fly spray :budgiedance:

The thought of using fly spay around the tiny respiratory systems of budgies seems wrong to me. If i spray the room to kill flies or something i cover my face and run out of the room because its so strong and yucky - how can it be safe for birds :budgiedance:

You are right guys!!!!

How was I meant to know, I haven't had them before and these are new birds ( i've had red mites cause I didn't wash branches but not feather mites) I just feel bad But I am glad that I did a little research and have my BBC and friendly experienced Members to help me worth things out - I AM RELIEVED THAT IT ISN'T FM .....

okay, so i will go for 2.5 weeks and re spray them to be on the safe side - I can toss the perches out and replace as the gum tree has fallen down the back so i can reach the branches now :D ....

Well at least Me and the Newbies now know what to look for :D
