September 9, 200816 yr Look much better Can I make a small suggestion though. To make it easier to put the wire on if you cut those two 'outside' bottom pieces down with a hand saw so they fit between the side bits instead of sitting on the outside of them your wire will sit nice and flush
September 9, 200816 yr That is looking great!!! Looks nice and strong Look forward to the progress pictures
September 9, 200816 yr Real nice. What is your name? It might make it a little bit easier, but well done. Cant wait until i see the final job it will turn out excellent. JoEl... AGAIN please use full stops and capital letters. You have been told over and over again and you are NOT listening! Edited September 9, 200816 yr by maesie
September 10, 200816 yr Author By reading other post and having a look in this topic, i see quite a number of give me aviary ideas/suggestions or me to build one. I believe people should post topic like these but the have to include pictures of there backyard to show where to put the aviary. No dimensions or lengths to no how long it would be. They are entitled to show this topic but give more information in doing so. I just thought of saying this to warn those who will try to do topics like those. Its not a lecture just showing you the right way! Edited September 10, 200816 yr by **Liv** removed underline - too hard to read
September 10, 200816 yr huh???? sorry I am not sure what you mean Edited September 10, 200816 yr by **Liv**
September 10, 200816 yr We don't force members to post pictures with their suggestion because that is their own "personal" information if they chose to great if they don't that is okay. Your suggestion is well taken and if you do searches you will find that many members have started topics on how they are building their aviary along with pictures of where they have been placed etc...
September 11, 200816 yr People build thier aviaries based on the space they have in their garden, the amount of budgies they have, their future plans for breeding and or keeping budgies, their financial situation ( what they can afford ) and their abilities to build. I believe people should post topic like these but the have to include pictures of there backyard to show where to put the aviary.[/unquote] Nobody is made to do anything on here as far as being told what to post. September 11, 200816 yr Agree with Kaz & Elly Mate -- I am sure that if you look at the AVIARY section, you will find alot of information on what other members use to build their aviaries - and etc
September 11, 200816 yr Hi, I have recently posted a topic on aviaries and have put some demension in, but most of my ideas have come from budgie books. It's fine to get ideas from the forum but it is a very individual thing, with so many contributing factors that even aviaries which may be built from the same plan would probably turn out totally different. If you have a querie on aviaries just ask the forum and I'm sure someone will be able to give you some advice and then its up to you whether this advice suits your situation and whether you wish to act on it. You may be lucky and get a few different opinions which you can then see if any of the opinions help. Let us know what you have in mind avairy wise, so we can get an idea of your situation then we may be able to contribute some ideas. :hap:
September 11, 200816 yr I agree with the others here... There are plenty of posts here with photos, perhaps you didn't look hard enough. As to dimensions and location etc... I can't tell you where to put one or how big to make it... my backyard probably faces a different way to yours and may be bigger or smaller. I also may own more or less budgies than you. Also, if you are after suggestions and assistance, I suggest you ask and not criticize others on how they post THEIR OWN TOPICS. There are ways of suggesting things with out coming across as you have. Here are 5 topics I found in about 5 minutes. ALL have photos and lots of ideas! They were all on the first page of the aviary topic too! Deb's aviary KAZ's Aviary Charlie2479's Aviary Neat's Aviary Zebra's Avairy
September 11, 200816 yr There's a BIG difference between an AVIARY and a LARGE CAGE An aviary is something big enough to walk into and through. A cage is anything you can just reach into. Edited September 11, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 11, 200816 yr Maes well done for posting the links to the aviaries * I was too lazy to oh Neat!!! lol... And just to agree with Kaz, what you have built so far and are working on would be considered a cage, not an aviary. CAGE: AVIARY: (home built by Charlie2479)
September 13, 200816 yr Author I have 2 budgies at the moment and will breed at the start of the school holidays(2 weeks time from today.) and l'm very happy. What do you guys think?
September 13, 200816 yr As good of a job as you did I unfortunatly think you'll lose birds out of there as they'll eat their way out Also you don't have a base on it, if that blows over, they're gone
September 13, 200816 yr Good job. You will have to make a base or rodents will dig under and kill your birds. Dig a hole under where the avairy sits and put pavers their or cement it, that way rats cant burrow up and hurt your birds. And as Liv said, If you dont secure that avairy to the ground, it will blow over and the birds will fly straight out. Other than that it looks quite good. P.S you could attach the avairy to the fence with a few closed brackets or somthing, that way it wont blow over Good luck Edited September 13, 200816 yr by pearce Chnaged LIV to Libby :-)
September 13, 200816 yr Looking good. Personally my suggestions are: 1: Put tin on 2 of the sides and the roof 2: Pave/cement the base and secure into position. 3: be careful of the door as they could easily fly out when its open
September 13, 200816 yr It looking good but I have to agree with the others, I would also suggest a few more perches, natural ones if possible, it will give them some thing to chew on and they will get more excerise when they fly back and forth. Also is it my eyes or is there only aviary wire on 2 sides of that cage? Edited September 13, 200816 yr by Elly spelling
September 13, 200816 yr Budgies will eat through shade cloth so you really need wire all the way around includin on the base. ONce you have wire on the base hammer some tent pegs through the wire and into the ground to hold it in position Some natural branches would be greta too
September 13, 200816 yr What a fantastic Job!! You went to alot of effort to make it - But I too agree with the others, For the safety of your birds, & your heart break, you are better off adding wire mesh to all sides and bottom if you can .... A few more perches and water dishes and you will be set ... Great job for a beginner
September 13, 200816 yr Author I have had them for the night :hap: and they seem not to tear the green mesh, but il still keep it in the back of my head. Trust me this thing is heavy unless a heavy heavy heavy heavy storm comes in, it will stay put. Its dimensions are 110cm by 110cm. :hap:
September 14, 200816 yr I have had them for the night and they seem not to tear the green mesh, but il still keep it in the back of my head. Trust me this thing is heavy unless a heavy heavy heavy heavy storm comes in, it will stay put. Its dimensions are 110cm by 110cm. :hap: You really need to start to listen to those who have experienced the losses of birds through inadequate housing if you want to keep your birds safe from harm. Your cage ( not aviary ) may be heavy and strong in your eyes, but rats will dig in over night and leave the carcasses of whats left of your birds for you to find the next morning. Others on this forum including myself have expereinced what rats can do when the ground under an aviary or cage allows them access. The shade cloth will not deter the budgies for long, nor will it stop predators from gaining access from outside in. I know you are trying to do things to the best of your abilities and to a budget, but you need to go just a little further to make your cage safer. Edited September 14, 200816 yr by KAZ
September 14, 200816 yr It is tough when you are starting out, and wanting to do it all. You do what you think is best, then someone comes on and tells you how you can do it better, and you feel a bit let down. I know, I understand. In saying that, everyone on here only want what is best for you and your budgies, so they are offering you some advice, some very good advice as well. Do not wait until some cat has ripped through your shadecloth, or some rat has dug up underneath your aviary, or your aviary ahs been tipped over, before you do something about it. Think about how you will feel if you lost one bird, or two. Guilt is a terrible thing. try to take the ideas and suggestions on board. You will be happier and so will your birds, ir they all are never needed, but if they are, and you have done nothing, you will feel devastated. Put your birds first.
