Last weekend we moved the cubby house and then during the week i level the ground for the aviary.Today my husband is doing trips to pick up my bricks and the base is finally getting put down for my aviary. i cannot wait to get it finished because i am having problems with the young birds picking on a couple of old males in the aviary and once i have 2 aviaries i can seperate them.

It was hard to move the cubby house because it is all timber and the base is a solid wood pallet. My husband has a bad back so after we finished he had to lay on the lounge with a heat pack on his back and took alot of pain killers.

I am interested on who is picking on whom in the aviary. Is it Laverne or shirley?I cannot see the boys behaving badly

It is Laverne i am having problems with. She chases the older birds around and fights with them especially Henry my big green male she has taken a special interest in harrassing him. He goes into the log to hide from her and she sits on the top waiting for him to poke his head out and then attacks him everytime he ventures out.

She is already bossy and cranky now i dread what she will be like when she is going through her first moult. If she cannot find Henry to torment then she goes to the floor and chases the quails around.

I have great news, my hubby has got a couple of days off work and even though it is windy and cold he is doing some more work on my avairy. Yeah.

I have also dragged my 12 year old son out of his room away from his computer to help my hubby. I will post some pics tonight. My 2 youngest got all rugged to go out and help or hinder i think it ended up being. My son was trying to dig a hole and Lucy, my 2 year old thought it was more fun to grab her sandpit shovel and put the dirt back in the hole. :)

We are putting a wire wall down the middle so i will have breeding cabinets on one side and a aviary on the other.

Suggestion.......tin up the sides to at least two feet will assist in stopping rodents from climbing the wire....although they can climb the trees and drop down from above. Are you covering the top so nothing gets in ?

I am having a full tin roof and tin walls for the back and back half. i have wire to the floor of my other aviary and do not get mice in my aviary so i am hoping they will not get into this aviary either.

Deb remember Murphy's Law .... What can go wrong will go wrong

If you have gone to the trouble to make such a lovely avairy, I do highly recommend the tin be put on the sides at least knee height around the walls ......

If mice \ Rats ( as they jump) for some reason get into that one, you will kick your self for not doing it when you could of :P

i think we will put tin up the side but we will do wire first because i have the wire and then get tin later on and add it. We finally finished the foundations today and even though we are having a tin roof , my hubby wants to put wire under the tin so in cause we get strong wind and the tin lifts up the birds cannot escape and also make it more mice proof.

It was a cold day today so the kids got all rugged up to help.Lucy even though she was wearing a beanie still had to put her hood on, i really hope she develops a better fashion sense when she gets older.

Your hubby is good isn't he :)

Your kids look so cute all rugged up - We have had it really cold and wet here too.... brrrrr, but its much better than the stinking summer heat :D

Looking GOOD Deb :D Husband is having some good ideas too. You wait and see...before long he will really get involved and will say NO less often :):D

PS Its taken four years but my husband Ken has finally decided he would like some budgies of his own. The breeder we saw recently and got some birds from picked out a skyblue cock and grey hen for my husband to try and breed. :D

Half the roof was done today and got some wire up but had a couple of accidents with the wire which slowed things down. Somehow my hubby and son measure up a length of wire wrong and it ended up too short. It will end up being used on the side where the door will be. Then i accidently toss a piece of wood on top of another length of wire my son was cutting and put a hole right in the middle of it. This piece will get used on the door some how. So we spent most of the day cutting out new pieces of wire.
