Freaking Out

Featured Replies

So I am going to pick up Astro/Altas/Elmo tomorrow and I am freaking out. I have almost made myself sick today. I have so much to do when I get home tonight. I have to take a bed apart (after I photograph it to sell on e-bay) run down to Bunnings and pick up plastic liner for the floor, clean the area, move the pictures and re hand them, get my large patio cage and clean clean clean, work out where the hens that are in it at the moment are going to go. Go get some organic dried fruit and some nuts (but not peanuts as they could kill him).

Then I have the issue of how to get him home, it's going to be really stressful for him anyway and what do I do, do I take a flight cage and turn it on it's side for him? So I take a big enough box? Should I call Ivan and ask him? *feels like passing out* and then once I get him home I have to make sure that he has enough toys to keep him happy in his cage for the first week, I am doing half days at work next week so I can spend some time with him and help with the bonding.

Oh god what if I get him home and he hates me? What if I am a bad mum? I think I am going to freak out in the corner over the and then pass out!

Deep Breathes......BREATHE...everything will be okay.... :D

Make a list and work through just one thing at a time...it will create some form of calm and organisation. As far as a travel cage goes. If you are going to have a large bird you do need to get a travel cage suited for him. BUT in the meantime phone Ivan and ask for the loan of one.

Everything will be okay. You will be a brilliant mum.

Enjoy your special boy :D

Av- It sounds like you have already put your head between your knee's and kissed your as ss good bye

You are going to work yourself into a fit!!!

Chill out mate !

First thing is first MAKE A LIST LIKE KAZ SAID * i love lists :D

So the first thing should be

**Get your plastic flooring and food on your way home from work

- That way you don't have to go back out again.

* Housing for him - Work on that first if you have to move hens Find their housing first

- Includes cleaning it out and setting it up ...

Now you are selling a bed on Ebay - This can be done later it isn't a High priority yet .

Moving pictures and re hanging them I am sure that can be done later too -

But you work on your list and I wish you more hours in the day :D

Don't stress Av - Atlas ( I  that name ) will be sooooo happy to have you !!!

I like Atlas too!

Mate dont stress- anything you dont have done by the time he gets there can be done during the weeks following- all he NEEDS is a cage, food and water for now. You will be home and big chance he will be too busy settling in to play with too many toys anyway. Pack the bed and pictures up in a corner of the room for now- these are small jobs that can be done after he arrives- you can do it together!!

Cat carrier will work well enough for a large bird for now.

So go get some seed, put your hens somewhere, set his cage up and chill. You sound as bad as me- things can be done after he arrives LoL

I use a cat cage for all my large birds  If you need to call me tonight to scream go for it :D Also chick I don't know if I will be around until about 3:30pm tomorrow but I'll leave the branches out the front incase you decide you need to get one/them early

Thanks guys, for some reason I just feel totally underprepared. I have spend so much time researching how to give him the best care possible that I have not put anything into motion to get ready for him.

One of the ladies on another board I am on runs the website http://www.friendlybirdinn.com.au/

She has said she will help me out with toys as King Parrots are not big toy feids and are happy to sleep most of the day so no point buying a much that will not suit him or he will never play with.

I have written a list and going to work my way through it tonight and hopefully get to a point where I feel more at ease with the situation. :P

changed bing to big (spelling)

Don't forget he will be quiet for the first few days probably anyway so the main thing is that his cage is clean and ready, most other stuff can wait :P

I wouldn't be pulling apart that bed anytime soon... it sounds like you'll need a lie down!!! :P You'll get there... and ELMO will love you :D

I think I am going to need a few more feed/D cups as they said to mix the shell grit and the egg mix but now it looks a little gross and a few extras will not hurt.

I love that cage it is so popular and awesome, I have the green version for Merlin :rip:

Shell grit? Don't forget a large parrot is just like a big budgie, personally I don't give my large parrots shell grit for the same reason I don't give it to my budgies.

Seriously, you'll be fine, if all else fails just think, "if he was a budgie what would I do". Really budgies are just mini parrots so they like their food bigger but that's about it. :rip:

Cool thanks, do you have any parrots that use shell grit as i have a bunch now! Otherwise I can give it to my dad for the chickens. :rip:

I put a small amount in a dish on the floor in the aviary under the table for the quails but that's about it. I wouldn't give grit to ANY parrot :rip:

I bet you are glad he is home :D, he looks very handsome.

His cage looks fantastic... and isn't he a handsome boy! It sounds like a good sign if he has eaten, drunk and is checking out his cage! I'm so excited for you. Have you decided on a name yet? I'd be using it everytime I went past his cage, and when you speak to him. That way he'll start to recognise it as his own! :D Fun times ahead mate!

Well I went to change his water over and he came out and jumped on my shoulder as i type this he is trying to work his way around my study eating things and jumping back on my shoulder if he feels scared which I think is a good thing as it means he trusts me. Most of the morning has been "Elmo no don't eat the keyboard, Elmo no don't eat the camera, Elmo No don't eat the pen...." :D At the moment we are having paddle pop wars it's funny!I was going to leave him in his cage but as he knows me and trusts me when he wanted to come out I was not going to force him back in if that makes sense.Oh god he chews everything!IMG_00011.jpg

Wow - Another thing to add to your list is to pick a name :P

Personally Atlas was an awesome name But well I haven't seen king parrots before and Elmo suits him better :P

Have fun with him :D :D :D

Excellent news AV. If he goes to you when he is scared, that's a great start in the bonding process. Elmo is so adorable! I'm sure he is going to keep you on your toes :P

I just Love the name Atlas (not really an Elmo fan). He carries the world on his shoulders! and you carry him on your shoulders he he he. (ooo ooo plus the world is green and blue, and what colour his shoulders are???? Green and blue!!!!) lol

You stress out about so much! bad girl, go take a lie down! I'm sure your new edition won't mind playing on you while you do.
