Do Some Opaline Markings Show On Split Birds?

Featured Replies

This boy and his 3 brothers have all finished their first moult and some opaline markings have come though on the tops of their wings. I always knew they are split for opaline as their mother is opaline, but i didn't know they would show markings. It it normal for opaline splits to show some opalining in their wings????

Its not "normal" as such but happens often. Its a show fault on a show budgie :)

is it called opalescence (sp)

Yes. I believe that if a budgie shows opalescence then it is more inclined to carry opaline. I've made this observation from my own birds and only my males have opalescence

hhmmm is that what opalescence means. I didn't know. I always wondered how some of my normals look like Opaline's, but weren't.

good to know i dint think half the breeders i know now that.

thanks for that

Puntuation and spelling

I belive George is like that, two of his brothers were opaline(inclueding Bailey) and so was his mom and his dad is split

Agree it's called opalesence.

It doesn't only happen in cocks, it happens in hens also, but doesn't necessarily mean there is opaline in the genes.

My yf1 violet show hen has ALOT of opalesence, but is still a normal and obviously can't be split as she's a hen.

yous are incorrect about opalescence.

Opalescence is the sheen that comes on a budgerigar. The Opaline when it was first bred had this lovely sheen and it was given the name Opaline because of the Opalescence in the Colour of the bird as it reminded them of the Opal (stone). This Opalescence sheen came on the feather especially around the lower feathers of the bird around the 'skirt' area of the bird.

What you may be referring to is the Opalescent sheen that at times comes on a "Normal Budgerigar" especially around the head area and some breeders say that this shows that the bird is split to Opaline. May or may not be true, and only by breeding with the bird will one know if it is split to Opaline.

best regards JoEl ;)
