okay so I was bad and I bought a King Parrot today, well I sort of Adopted it.

You know Ollie the king parrot at my pet store well the owner comes up to me today and says as they are closing down they have to clear stock and he is worried what is going to happen to Ollie. We where chatting and then well I sort of got offered him for alot less then his price tag. (we are talking over 50% less)

I know I know I should not have but I do really like him and he has started to bond with me, I go into the room and he leaps for me or tries to fly to me and starts trying to feed me which is a little gross but I can deal with that and there is this other guy who wanted to buy him but keeps killing animals and I have the room and he gets along with Budgies (not that I would ever put him in my aviary with them). *breath*

I am going to pick him up in a few weeks as I have to sort out my wildlife licence as my renewal has not come yet so have to work that out and have to move some birds around so that Ollie can have my old patio cage which will do him for now but will look at saving for a much bigger cage in the future. Cause he is use to being with alot of other birds I am going to move the breeding cages around to give myself some more room so that Ollie can go out there in his cage for the first few weeks. I think he will feel more at home in the Bird room and then I will bring him into the house when I get my study sorted.

okay now off to research perches and feeding of a King Parrot. So now that is it. I am done no more pets for me for a while..... okay you can all stop laughing now!

Yes he was handtamed, he had a glitch in his taming and is a little shy but as long as you don't shove things at him and move slowly he is right. He hates being poked but then again i would not poke any bird and he has worked out that if he grabs your finger (not hard and it does not hurt) then you pull back and scream and he thinks that if funny (comes from being in a pet shop with people doing this to him all day long). Funny thing is that there is a sign that says "please don't touch the Parrot" up near his perches. i walk in there today and he starts making this funny noise and lunches himself at me and I have to catch him (his wings are clipped) freaked out this family that was in the bird room. he starts trying to feed me and then the lady starts screaming at me that I am not allowed to touch the bird and I am going to get her in trouble and then he starts flapping and screaming at them and they ran from the room then he settled dawn and starts trying to feed me again :P Ivan came in and laughed at us. then when I went back later today (had to swap over a fish) this guy was trying to buy him and I felt like crying. This guy is know to the store as he buys animals and a few month later comes in and says they are dead and blames to store, ivan was refusing to sell him so i step in and pretend that I have already organised to purchase Ollie. Then get talking to Ivan and the other guys and they offer me the reduced rate and I agree to pick him up in a week or two. Part of me knows that I should not have but the other part breaks when i think about not having him, it was shocking how upset I felt when I thought he was going to be purchsed by anyone else.

Anyway, he can say Pardon and count to three if he wants to. He currently shares his space with three other Budiges who he is happy to sit next to and even attempted to feed on today, poor budgie also choked to death! ;)

I am feeling a little better about the price as I have seen then hand rasied for about $300 - $600 for the same age. I rang two places today that have good reps at hand raised parrots and all of them where at least $100 over what I am paying so not feeling too ripped off.

Ivan has been very selective over who he would let take him and as he has started to bond with me then they sort of hoped that I would take him. It's a big step and I am researching like mad, I am going to have him for the next 20 odd years so I was glad when my partner was okay with me getting him.

AV if you have any dramas with your licence let me know as I have mine now so you can always get him put onto mine and I'll transfer him over to you once it's sorted ;) Also if he needs a home for the vicious sugar glider and he'll do a better price let me know as I really like him but I'm not paying that for a nasty pasty :P

Are you talking about the suger glider that he has in there? i will talk to him about the price and see if we can work something out. he is very good at over pricing things to put people off but when someone is really intrested in them then they do look at dropping the price. originaly Ollie was $600 when he first came in to put people off then came down to $400 and I got him for about half of that.

my License should be fine but i have to check where my renewal is.

Yeah the one he has in there at the moment which has 'social issues' :P I think he currently has $200 but you know I would give him a great home ;)

Are we talking sugar glider as in possum looking thing with skin between it's legs?

I wasn't aware they were able to be sold like general animals?

hey AV

would you be able to tell me the name and location of this pet store as i wouldn't mind having a look

Thanks

Sure it's Burwood birds and Pets it is on Toorak Rd just before it becomes Burwood High way city side of Warrigal Rd.

they are having a closing down sale and I think about 25% off most things, 10% of bird things.

MB next time I am in there will talk to them. So i am assuming that you have been in there? You went with out me *crys*

Libby sugar gliders, ringtails and brushtail possums can be held on a basic wildlife licence issued by the Vic dept. of sustainability, they can only be sold by pet shops which hold a wildlife traders licence :(

Ummm... I might have gone without you AV :) I promise I will come with you again another time though, I was interested to see what they had. I rather liked the tank theyhad set up for the frogs on the front counter (the big one) but even second hand Jock was going to charge me $200 for it and I can buy a brand new one for $150 so I didn't bother, I did by a few budgie breeding boxes though and a couple of fish for my pond. I still need some more breeding boxes, but I won't be able to afford them for a few weeks as I missed a fortnights worth of pay because of time off for my wedding, so I'm poor :D

I have to agree some things in there are not cheapest all the time but Jock knows what he is talking about when it comes to birds and ivan knows birds and as I found out today fish, he has been breeding them since he was 5! :)

Also you have to remember that in the past year they have been pulling almost a $40,000 loss so they are doing some things at great prices. My Fish tank set up cost me around $500 for both tanks another place I went to where going to charge me $600 for a tank set up the same without fish!

Ah, that's cool to know... never seen them here :)

Any wedding photo's yet MB :P?

..... okay you can all stop laughing now!

No  :hap: :hap:

Oh Av - you make me laugh !!!!

Fingerscross you learn what you need to :D and have a great time boding with it

I have been researching like mad but there is not alot out there. Had a chat to MB about food for him last night and feeling a bit better now that I know he is not going to starve to death. When I get him I am going to take him to the vet just wondering if I should do this on the first day or should I let him settle for a week? My research has found that they do not handle stress at all, more so then Budgies so now I am freaking out that I am going to stress him to death... or hes going to stress me to death!

Started looking for branches and stuff to build him a play gym. I am trying to work out how I can section off a room or something so he can have free run of a room during the day and only really have to be caged at night but not sure I have the space. On the weekends I want him to spend most of his time out of the cage and I figure that if I build a play gym in my Study once the bed is gone then it will give him some more room.

Ummm...just watch out for your walls. 4 days of free range time and we came back one day to find our galahs had chewed a 1 ft square hole in our wall!!!

Best play gym for a big bird is to get a large bucket and a big branch. Put the thick end of the branch in the bucket and fill with quick set concrete

OH GOD! okay so now thinking going to have to convert some of the garage for him! :hap:

Was going to do that with a branch but it's finding the branch that is the issue. Maybe I should look around for some further out from Burwood. Might have to take a drive up pas ferntree gully and see what I can find up there.

Safe branches?

That is awesome AV. Pity about the petshop closing down as they seem to be one of the only petshops that really cares about its animals.

Think I am going to have to come and steal a bunch. Also you know the pair you gave to me on loan? (HeMan & SheRar) I am going to have to return them, one of my hens took a liking to the cock and we had a slappers fight, your hen is fine not a scratch on her, mine is in a warm box in the living room, looks like she tried to give her brain surgery ;)

I hope that is okay?

These are the two big branches, note the light pole in the first one so you can see how big it is, might need to be cut down a bit. The second one has heaps of leaves on it but underneath ar good solid branches too.

I don't think she started it to tell you the truth she never showed any agression towards anyone and my hen had only been in there a couple of days so I would say mine started it :P

Ohhhh I might have to come and get them! :P
