Posted September 6, 200816 yr i went to the petshop to buy some bird seed and chook pellets. Hubby decided to stay in the car with the little kids because it was raining so 2 budgies just happened to jump in a box and came out of the shop with me. I am fairly sure they are both hens and dominant pieds because of their wing markings but i wanted other peoples opinions. It is raining so i had to use the flash for photos so their colours did not come out right. The one that looks about 6 months old is a grey and the baby is skyblue.
September 6, 200816 yr Ones definatly a dominant pied, the baby i'm not so sure on... any pics of the back of it's head by any chance? Body patterning looks more RP there.... Nice score though Bet the kids were impressed, hubby probably not so much haha
September 6, 200816 yr recessive pied. Remember the pied topic where we talked of mixed colour through the flights ?
September 6, 200816 yr Author The wings marking are what confuses me with pieds. I only have male recessive pieds so now i have a female which is good. The grey is my first dominant, is it male or female? i thought hen when i bought it.
September 6, 200816 yr Author At least i got the gender right on the budgies but not the type of one.
September 6, 200816 yr Author i am pretty happy with the dominant pied, only paid $ 20. She seems to have a big head so is she a show type or pet type. she is bigger than alot of my pet types.
September 6, 200816 yr Hey Deb .. I Just love that your box came with budgies It's great when the guys stay in the car with the kids, THEY CAN"T SAY NO THEN I agree with the others, Dom pied & little one is a Recess Pied
September 6, 200816 yr You've got it worked out, 1 dominant and 1 recessive. Both hens. I can understand how they just happened to jump in a box and come out of the shop with you
September 6, 200816 yr Don't you just love it when things 'hop' into your shopping bags!!! Hasn't your hubby learnt not to let you go into the pet shop alone . Very nice finds Deb, they are sweet :hap:
September 6, 200816 yr I know we are focussing on the dominant v recessive pied thing here, but the so called grey has bluish looking cheek patches to me. Doesn't that make her muave, not grey?
September 6, 200816 yr Author I know we are focussing on the dominant v recessive pied thing here, but the so called grey has bluish looking cheek patches to me. Doesn't that make her muave, not grey? She looks grey to me but i have never had a mauve to compare her too. She definitly has blue cheek patches not grey so is that a sign she is mauve not grey.
September 6, 200816 yr Deb, the Recessive Pied Hen reminds me of Pretty in my signature . Congrats on your findings!
September 6, 200816 yr Greys can have blue cheek patches but blues can't have grey cheek patches... I'm not sure on which this one is either Neville??? !
September 6, 200816 yr If she has a navy blue tail, she's a mauve. If the tail is black, she's grey. Same with green and grey greens. She has also some blue tinge in her breast, but I think a grey budgie can have it too. It's the tail that tells it all! (Unless a bird is a recessive pied grey, or any other mutation when the tail is almost all white or yellow.)
September 6, 200816 yr If she was mauve her cheek patches would be purplish. cheek patches on greys range from grey to blue. As Falki said check her tail, the long tail feathers on a grey would be black
