A Visit To A Budgie Enthusiast Today

I visited a young lady today who had asked me to come and look at her budgies. She said she didnt know about what types they were and needed some help working them out and pairing them up.

This young lady is new to budgies after having ringnecks for a long time. They still have ringnecks, including tame house ones.

I was a little bit "surprised" to say the least at the housing and arrangements for the budgies she had, especially since the ringnecks had such great aviaries and conditions.

I had to bite my tongue for the longest time and introduce suggestions and ideas slowly over a couple of hours and a few cups of coffee, while I was entertained by a green ringneck climbing all over me. I stayed longer than I was going to, in order to introduce ideas and assistance for the budgies welfare without their owner feeling like she had done some terrible wrongs. She has a good heart and intentions for the birds BUT they definitely could have been kept in a better way than they were.

There was a main cage two feet wide by a foot and a half deep and almost three feet tall. This cage contained about 15 budgies and three nesting boxes. Budgies of all ages in there. Territorial issues were in play due to pairs trying to mate and defend the perch so that they could take on the nesting boxes for breeding. Too many budgies in such a small space meant that various budgies were in and out of the nestboxes squeezed into that space.

As another much larger cage had just been purchased, I helped fit it out and we worked out which budgies could go in there with no nestboxes.

In another cage smaller than a breeder cage was a pair of budgies, two fledged babies and two young nearly fledged babies. The Dad was trying to mate with one of the babies while the mum was inside trying to lay eggs. As it turned out this pair were brother and sister. The owner had not realised that the fact that the nesting box was there for them had caused them to pair up. We chatted about that, and at the end the birds...brother and sister and all babies were moved into another spare cage with no nestbox. Two eggs were discarded. Mum may well lay another egg from the perch and then stop but it seemed there was no egg imminent at this time.

I gave advice based on the mutations of the birds which was eagerly written down, and all advice was listened to in ernest.

I gave advice for pairings for the future based on some breeding cabinets I would give her...surplus to my needs. One budgie she was going to put with another boy....I had to tell her would not work as the "hen" was actually a cockbird...a recessive pied.

Now this is just part of what occurred today....but I had the opportunity to help out someone who was actually willing to be helped and willing to do the right thing in spite of lack of knowledge and bad prior information.

I am giving her some breeder cabinets, equipment and a couple of free budgies as she has three very nice cocks and the only hens she had to put to them were tiny tiny pinheaded hens as big as a bush budgie.

This person has no internet or computer right now, but I have offered ongoing support as I have recognised in her a need to do better.

That was my day today ..................

That is a wonderful story Kaz, keep us updated if you keep in contact with her. You know we at one time didn't know what we were doing and at one point somone helped us out. If she is willing to listen and take suggestions as she seems she is per your post before you know it she will have a budgie haven at her place too. Knowledge is amazing and when people are open to it is incredible the changes that are done to improve the lives of others.

Great Kaz. She does sound like she has a good heart... just a little misguided. I'm glad she listened to your idea and it sounds like she'll take them on board. It will be nice to follow her progress as she gets into breeding budgies. :D

That is great kaz that you were able to help me and guide her carefully in the right direction.

I wish I loved next to you ;)

Great how she was willing to learn, I can forgive people for not knowing and making bad choices with miss information I can't forgive when they ignore information. Well done Kaz, but then again did anyone from the forum expect any less of you :(

What a lovely story! i look forward to updates on how she is going ;)

If you guys all lived so close to me....

I would never get any work done

I would get fatter from cups of coffeee and cake afternoons

and I would end up giving all my spare birds away

:)

Maybe we should all love about half an hour away from each other and the we wouldn't visit too often, but just the right amount. That way no fatness will occur
