Posted September 1, 200816 yr does anyone know any tricks or remidies when it comes to a vomiting budgie? one of my hens, a normal move has been vomiting for a week or two, ive got her in a cage on her own in the bird room with a light up one side, and ive given her some antibiotics but she doesnt seem to be improving. i read a bit in books and one said to put epson salts in the drinking water, is that the go or would that give the runs to an already sick bird?? thanks matt
September 1, 200816 yr Agree... read this and let us know: Reguritation vs Vomiting . If it is vomiting, she shouldn't have been left that long without seeing a vet! You also should never give antibiotics randomly without knowing if they are needed. This can be very bad for their health. Edited September 1, 200816 yr by maesie
September 1, 200816 yr I agree too. Vomiting is a side to side action which splatters the expelled seed all over the cage and the bird. Regurgitation is an up and down movement which doesn't create too' much mess. If its vomiting she will need to see a vet tomorrow to find the cause

If it was my bird and she was vomiting for a week or two, I'd definately take her to a vet. I also don't have a lot of money, but I also don't have 100 birds... My flock is 9 strong :hap:
September 1, 200816 yr yes its definately vomiting ....and i just cant take any bird to see the vet , just because it vomits, dont know about you guys but i cant afford it. :hap: The vet will need to do a swab to make sure that it is being treated for the correct thing - It could be mould or parasites This is why it is IMPORTANT TO QUARANTINE new birds Edited September 1, 200816 yr by KAZ fixed quote
September 1, 200816 yr Unfortunately the truth is Matt, that a proper diagnosis is needed to treat the bird.
September 1, 200816 yr I understand your hesitation at dashing off to the vet at every sniffle, I too can't afford it. I keep a bit of money aside for emergencies or when I really believe I can't solve a situation myself. I used to work as a vet nurse with a small animal vet so alot of basic stuff I can treat myself but I also recognise that I can't fix everything. If you have come to the conclusion that you can't solve the situation and you don't know what the problem is then it is time to consult a vet.

September 4, 200816 yr Good to hear that she was diagnosed, continue to keep her warm and watch her eating and drinking to ensure she is getting what she needs to get better.

September 11, 200816 yr Author The vet did a canker swab. It was the last day of treatment today and she is 100% better than before. I still have her in the bird room though. It's still been a bit cool in the mornings here to put her back in the aviary, thanks for your help matt MATT: PLEASE READ YOUR POSTS BEFORE POSTING.
