Budgies Wont Breed

Featured Replies

Posted

I have 3 pairs of Budgies outside in an aviary, and they just wont breed, whatever I do.

They always look in the nest boxes, and the males do their job, but no eggs come, and my sisters birds have had a clutch already.

I am sooo sad because I am a new breeder, and everything seems to be going wrong.

The bird book says that you have to stop them breeding and give them a rest, but mine wont start!

Thanks for your help,

Kirsten

The main problem I see in this http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/k...ry/IMG_7531.jpg

The nestboxes are way too close and you will find some birds will be keeping others from using them. Its a territorial thing. They need to be much further apart and with entrance holes facing various directions.

Unusual nestboxes also, entry holes are very large meaning ahen inside would feel exposed. What size are the nestboxes ? The top row of nestboxes dont even have any perches on the front of them.

Here is an article that may help you.....

at the end of the day, the hardest way to breed budgies is colony style.

Thanks very much I will go and change them around, that article looks really good,

Thanks

You should also have all nestboxes at the same level too, or else the hens will fight for the highest nest box

That information is in the FAQ article in the link that was posted

I agree with KAZ on this statement... I too am a new breeder and tried colony breeding. IT DID NOT WORK!! I had one hen take control of 4 nesting boxes not allowing any other hens to get settled in. I also had one hen go in another hens box and kill her egg and eat it. It was only after I seperated them into breeding cages that I started having success. I now have two nesting pairs with a total of 10 eggs so far. :D I would recomend any advice given on this site, because any time I strayed just a bit from their suggestions, I failed. :P Some people's style or hopes are different, my hope was to colony breed and just let things happen as they happened, but once I saw un-neded stress and "death" occur, I was no longer willing to take that gamble. The advice here has proven to work for me. My breeding pairs are now expecting (any day now by the way)!!! And my birds are healthy and happy. :D

Hey Kaz,

Hurray Finally eggs.

Thanks for your help

I changed the nest boxes around and now all 3 females are laying eggs!

One of them has three but she did not sit on them last night, but the other one with three did - when do they start sitting normally?

Thanks

Kirsty

Good news Kirsty. Dont worry about when they sit as they all vary a little from each other.
