My Guinea Pig Gina

Featured Replies

If you rember my Guinea pig Gina had that cherry eye/pea eye well that healed and now she wont move she burrys herself under her straw and wont eat or drink on her own. I bought her some water and she drank from my hand and then I tried offering her some water with the vitamins and she just kept turning her head away and normaly its her favourate. As for her appitite she wont eat on her own or out my hand her sister Kim is fatter than ever and Gina I think I can see her hip bones. But all my mother said was she's having an off day, but her eyes are crusty around the outside and she only mummbles and moves very slow. Is three years old, elderly for a Guinea pig?

I'm absolutly devasated right now I just dont want to lose her :)

Get her to the vet if you can.

I don't think 3 years old is elderly for a guinea pig, they usually live for 5-7 years.

Has she pooped recently? What does she do when you pick her up or touch her tummy? Is she vocalising?

I agree she sounds very sick and you need to talk to our mom, when animals die of old age it is a heart attack, suddenly or stroke this sounds like a respiratory infection of some sort and she will need antibiotics to get well and on top of that your other piggie is at risk to catch what she has, they are very delicate just like budgies and need special avian care. I hope your mom listens and you get her to a vet before it is too late.l

I dont know but I got her to eat some cucomber and drink some more water, and she does small weeking sounds quite though

Check her teeth as a guinea pig with overgrown teeth will exhibit that sort of behaviour. If you are able to get her to eat softer foods like apple and cucumber then my suggestion would be a sore tooth, an overgrown tooth or a mouth ulcer, ulcers can be quite common in guinea pigs that eat a diet based alot on one of the guinea pig 'mueslis' rather than pellets as the seeds can stick into thier gums.

I agree that she needs to see a vet, this isn't something you can fix on your own. Guinea Pigs don't have 'off days', they are busy little critters so the way you are describing her is very concerning.

Okay but what about Kimy should I buy her a new mate?

we were thinks neutered male, but I dont really want another one Im really upset about Gina and I cant look at her cage her sister nor can I look at pictures of her or talk about her Im crying right now as I write this.

I am sorry for your loss but now she is gone you have to think about Kimy and have her checked out by the vet and make sure she is not sick like Ginny. Did the vet say what was wrong? I would wait to ensure Kimy is okay and I am not sure if piggies are like budgies but isn't there a quarantine period too for these type of pets? Anyways, again I am sorry, I hope the advice I give you helps.

I am sorry for your loss of Gina and i agree with Elly that it would be good to get Kimy checked out by a vet.

Kimys fine the vet just said she wasnt breathing properly and Kimy is eating drinking and talking bright eyed and energetic and chunky.

I dont know Kim and Gina were sisters so I dont know...

Hugs, Jodie.

It is hard when you lose a pet. At least you know, she isn't in pain anymore and she got to go peacefully. Wait a little while before getting another piggie, so that Kimy recover from losing Gina. Give her lots of hugs and cuddles so she doesn't get lonely. Then when you both feel ready, get a little baby piggie.

A baby? but wont she attack him/her and if I did male or female?

If we did we're going to the RSPCA

Well baby will be much more docile for her to deal with.

Because Kimy is a girl piggie, it probably won't matter what sex you get. I would get a girl, because then you don't have to worry about babies (and the problems that an older sow would have having them) or neutering.

While baby is in quarantine it will grow bigger, so won't get bullied so easily and then introduce them slowly. Introduce them in a neutral place (neither of their hutches). Then put their cages next to each other, leave it like that, and then put Kimy in baby's place for a bit and then when they are ready to be moved in together, clean out the big hutch and put them in it.

When they first meet, it is a good idea to give them both a bath or put some non toxic perfume on them, so they both smell different

l'm so sorry for you loss ((((((((hugs))))))))

thank you, Im emotianal reck at the moment

Double hugs.

You can bathe them in the bathroom sink. Hold their head out of the water. Wash them using cat shampoo. (It is made nontoxic, because cats lick themselves). Make it warm water and test the temperature with your elbow. You bathe them by pouring the water over their bodies. Don't get their heads wet.

Then you can ruffle them in a towel or use a hairdryer (on lowest setting and continue to keep the hairdryer moving, so you don't burn it). Best to do this on a warm day.

I'm thinking about getting maybe two more guinea pigs male(neutered) and female from the RSPCA, but I'm still not sure if I even want one....

Getting another is probably the best thing you can do, it'll help make both of you feel better
