September 2, 200816 yr It's a little too early to be having problems due to build up of toxins, that normally happens at the two-three week mark. What pH were you told to keep the tank at?
September 2, 200816 yr Hmmmm, maybes they were all stressed then? *clutches at straws* What did the dead fish look like? Electrocuted ones have a curved spine Edited September 2, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
September 2, 200816 yr Author They where all flat. Will leave the two guys in there or the one and the ghost one and wait a week then add another one and so on till I get back upto the level i want. The other tank is doing fine, maybe it was a temp thing
September 2, 200816 yr Which tank had problems(what fish were in it and what temp?) even a couple of degrees can cause problems and the temp can take a few days to settle with a new heater, hate to say it chick but you probably should have waited a little longer before getting super excited and getting your fishies  Edited September 2, 200816 yr by melbournebudgies
September 2, 200816 yr Oh no... what a bummer. My local Aquarium shop do water tests. You just take a water sample in and they'll test is for you and help solve the problem... maybe try that. I know they do pH but they also test for other stuff. Good luck and I hope you don't loose any more. Hugs xoxo
September 2, 200816 yr Author The guys at the pet shop did a water test for me everything was right. The only thing we can think of is the heater. I have it set a 26 so one side of the tank (filter side) is 26 the other side is a little cooler at 24 right down the bottom. It was the tropical tank that had an Angel fish, 2 catfish things, 2 female simese fighting fish and three platy's. I only have the two simese fighting fish left and one looks not very well  BF is coming around on the weekend to check the set up and will go from there.
September 2, 200816 yr Temp is a little high if you ask me, don't rely on the thremostat on the heater either. Put a thermometer in the tank and adjust the heater based on that. I would set it at about 24 degrees, at 26 degrees it will encourage disease.
September 2, 200816 yr Author okay will drop it. I have those sticker things that tell the temp and a inwater one as well so i know the temp is right. Will drop and see if the fish pull through. thanks
September 2, 200816 yr We only ever had our tropical tank set on 24 degrees. Not sure why your temperature gauges say 26 on one side and only 24 on the other??
September 2, 200816 yr Author It's because of the way the filter works. also the warm water rises so you should have one corner with rocks etc that is cooler by a few degrees, well that is what all the research i have read says so was how I set it up
September 2, 200816 yr Hopefully a lower temp might solve your problems. I used to keep mine at between 22 and 24 degrees so I said 24 allowing for the fact that one end is warmer and one cooler. Unless you have a really high powered filter there will always be a slight temp gradient away from the heater, the fish will seek out the areas at the temp they want
September 3, 200816 yr awww l'm so sorry it was probably stress, l lost a few of my fish to stress l bought 8 guppy males last month and only 3 survived. just recently l purchased 4 more guppies 2 males and 2 females . l did not want to lose even more so, l used a slow drip method to get them use to the water and temperature of the quarantine tank. l also shut off their lights for 24 hours to help lessen the stress. after 24 hours l tested both their water and the quarantine tank to make sure all the ph level, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia where the same or very close, before l added them to the quarantine tank. l did end up losing a female and a male to fin rot but l then added Melafix and Pimafix with a little bit of aquarium salt to their water and now they are very healthy and l already added the male to the males tank but the female is still in the quarantine tank because she is pregnant if you do get more fish then l would suggest you to treat your new fish with melafix for 3 days(l'm not sure if you guys in Australia get this product) it is a natural medicine. this is a picture pf my female after using those medicine on her Edited September 3, 200816 yr by birdluv
September 3, 200816 yr Melafix is a fantastic product and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is actually deriveved from tea-tree oil so it is a very 'Aussie' product
September 3, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the info. I was told to do the 3 hours change over. One hour in the bag resting in the tank water then slowley add tank water to bag every 15 min for 1 - 2 hours untill water is completely mixed. A few people have said that the betas are very hardy so thinking that is why they have survivied. Going to get some more of them next week. Might even get a nice big pretty male and just have them in the tank. I do like the cat fish things however as they clean the walls and the rocks so might look at another one of them. However if I still fail then pulling the heater out of the tank and going to get some more fancy goldfish I brain tumor is so much fun to watch!
September 3, 200816 yr Actually it is interesting that the Bettas were the ones which survived. Do you have an airstone in the tank? I know the filter mixes the water a bit but the fact that the only ones which survived were the fighters suggests low dissolved oxygen, but the high temp would have also caused that to some extent too.

September 3, 200816 yr Oh Av - I am sorry mate .. We had a tropical tank too and well When dave decided to add water to it it cracked and the next morning the floor was flooded and the fish were dead ... This happened in winter when the water of the tank temp was warmer the the outside temp We had our temp set at Ummm I can't remember now But i am sure it was more then 24c But I have issues keeping goldfish alive I hope it all improves for you
September 3, 200816 yr Author See I had slimey the gold fish for about 16 years and never had an issue with him. He survived two bush fires, three moves and Bording school and Uni with me so I did not want to get another one till I was ready (I know that sound stupid cause he was only a fish but it was strange when I was really little I use to hug his fish tank to give him cuddles and he outlived so many of my other pets). I thought if I kept a gold fish alive all that time these would not be that hard. That and my BF who kills plants can keep and even breed tropical fish so how hard could it be! WRONG! Oh well. If I decide to go with Fancy gold fish it is only really a matter of taking the heater out and letting the water settle and going from there.
September 3, 200816 yr Author One of my two remaining girls does not look well I don't hold much hope that she will still be kicking when I come home tonight. I have decided to give up on Tropical fish but have found that I am falling for the fancy goldfish. Check out this site! http://keysboroughaquarium.com.au/2008/ind...=20a&page=1 I thought paying $20 for one fish was alot! :hap: I had a look at some of their tanks and can I just say WOW I am tryingto work out how I can change my study around to fit one of the 1000L tanks in :hap:
September 4, 200816 yr The fan tails are my favourite Gold fish ever I love them :hap: They will be are next ones :hap:
September 4, 200816 yr Author I have been looking at pictures of fancy gold fish for the past few days and just falling more and more in love. I really would LOVE to have a big tank that could hold like 10 but will have to wait for my sister to move out before I can think about doing that! :hap: My biggest issue is all the conflicting information about how much space they need. They need 5 gallons, no 10 gallons no 20 gallons per fish..... I have two 10 gallon tanks some people say I can have one in there others say up to three Then there is the food, one forum was talking about how you can't feed them flakes as they get air sack issues and another forum was saying how you can't feed them sinking food as they eat rocks and get them stuck..... Did you know you could feed your fish peas? I am going into info overload!
September 4, 200816 yr HAHAHAH okay i feed mine flakes And if a fish ate a rock either 1 it is relly dumb as they suck them up and spit them out .. Or 2 get bogger rocks Peas we use to feed the carp in the dam Old Old house Peas and bread
September 4, 200816 yr l use to own fancy goldfish and l always enjoyed having them, they where so nice to watch.
September 4, 200816 yr Yes, like MB said the higher the temperature in your tank, the lower the level of dissolved oxygen. It also increases the fish'es metabolism. haha. Yeah I feed my goldfish peas. Just remember to shell them first. Lol at "air sack" I think you mean gas bladder . What happens with goldfish is they eat lots (more than they need) so their intestines become full of food, which pushes on their gas bladder and makes them go wobbly. Gas can also build up too. It helps to moisten their food before hand and then they are happy. Also is good to swap foods, so they get a varied diet. I feed mine just pellets and peas at the moment. (need to buy flakes) You know what I think is awesome? That when fish are itchy they will scratch themselves on the surface of the water and thus show their bellies to you. So if your fish are flashing, they are itchy and probably have some skin parasite or infection. I have two Comets. I like the more natural look. While I think the others are kinda cute, I feel a bit mean for them. The squashed up ones also tend to get more gas bladder problems too. You can also feed cucumber and bloodworm ! September 4, 200816 yr Author Thanks for the info SW. See I am confused some say around 24 degrees other say as high as 28 degrees so I now have it set at 26 i think. Took another sample to the pet shop and the tested it for me. We can't work out what went wrong as everything is 100% so they gave me some teturas (sp?) and a male fighting fish for free and said to come back over the weekend and let them know how I am getting on. They have another fancy fish like Brain Tumor who i also like but don't think i could put him in with the the two I already have it might be to small.
