Tropical Fish

Featured Replies

Posted

okay so now I am worried. I decided to buy a tropical fish tank and get some fish. I bought what I could afford and not want I really wanted and I thought that it would be big enough but now I am having second thoughts. I think later down the track I will get a much bigger one when I decide that I have time to look after them all.

this is what I got

It is a 39L tank with fiter system and heater. I put washed gravel in the bottom and have treated the water going to let it settle for a week before adding plants, driftwood and fish.

I really want Angel fish

I am thinking only two to start with but now I am freaking out that I should have saved some more money and gotten the bigger tank but this smaller tank was on sale with 25% off. Basically with the sale I got a $400 set up for $339 and a $100 gift voucher for the store to come back and purchase fish and plants.

Does anyone have tropical fish?

HI

very nice tank.

I have 2 angel fish and 10 neons in a tank a little bigger than yours. If you get angel fish make sure you ask a professional what fish can go in with them. I know that barbs and tetras tend to pick and nip at the angel fishes fins and that will eventually kill the angel fish. My angel fish did lay eggs and the eggs did hatch at one stage but I did not know you had to seperate the babies, the adults then ate the babies.. Remember that if you are on tank water you need to let the water settle for a few days then add the fish otherwise the chlorine will kill them, you can buy a chemical that kills chlorine but I forget the name..

Hope I have helped.

Good luck.

Thanks, I think that I will just get two angelfish and leave it at that. I would rather them be healthy and happy then looking pretty for me.

Yes letting the water settle for a week. The stop said that they would not sell me any fish untill I have had the tank set up for a week so going back next weekend and picking my fish. The guys was really good when we went through the different types I liked this black one but he said no not with Angel fish. i would love a fighting fish bit then I can only really have one. Hmmm choices choices choices....

My real issue is that the tank looked HUGE in the store but then i got it home and next to my Budgie cage it looks tiny :D

I have tropical fish too. I am sure the 2 angelfish will be fine in there. Pearce - be careful with angelfish and neons because when the angelfish get bigger, they may eat the neons. I have had that experience, believe me.

I have 2 male fighting fish (in separate tanks), one blue and one red. The y are so vivid and elegant. I wish they didn't fight so i could have a tank full of them

Angel fish sound really pretty too. I look forward to your photos when you get your fish :D

Liv, I love the betta too, I had 1 and my daughter got a goldfish from school put them in together and the goldfish picked the **** out of the betta he ended up dying now I have a goldfish and a pleco that are HUGE and I don't enjoy them much anyways off topic...that would be a pretty tank for to have 1 in there. They are actually very peaceful fish with others and are good community fish. Just not with 2 males together.

I used to have a tank similiar to that AV with a single fighter male and about ten female fighters in it. You can get females that are nearly as bright as the males but just with shorter fins so it was really pretty :) If you want some help let me know, I have worked in both wholesale and retail aquariums and while I don't have any at the moment I used to have lots of tropical fish.

MB you're back! Oh Oh oh Pictures needed... anyway will let you know. Set up seems to be running fine just sorting out the PH levels and then adding this other stuff they gave me. It comes down to crunch time next weekend when I get to pick my fish. If I get the PH level sorted then hopefully on Wednesday or Thursday I can pick up my decorations and my plants put them in to settle and then get the fish over the weekend. My only issue is I can hear the water running in my study and it makes me need to pee all the time :):)

I haven't got the piccies yet myself :)

Some plants rot really easily so let me know if you like and I can come have a look, also I have a 'pond' here(it's actually a large terracotta pot) which I have some plants in which will do well in tropical and just keep growing like crazy. Also if you know anyone with masses of mondo grass in their gardens it is very tough and will last quite a while in an aquarium, take it by the roots and wash the dirt off really well and then plant it in the gravel.

Ebay is a great source of some plants that can be very expensive at pet shops.

Not so worried about cost as I have $100 voucher to spend at the pet store and they are closing in a few weeks so going to have to spend it on something. I know that their fish stock is limited but it's one of thise cases where I want to support them as much as possible, they have been in business in the same shop for 38 years and now due to factors beyond their control they are closing :)

I figure that even if I get expensive plants, some drfit wood or rock formation and two angel fish i am still going to have money left over for some budgie toys, cuttle fish and maybe something for the dogs! :)

My only issue is I can hear the water running in my study and it makes me need to pee all the time :budgiedance: :oliveb:

I bought one like that for my Mum last year and she finds it very noisy with the water going through the filter it would drive me batty I think :dbb1:

Really did anyone not think something like this was going to happen. the guy said that i could put the big guy in with the tropical fish but well it sort of snowballed and god i am so broke!

I'm sorry to have to tell you this AV but there is just no hope for you - you are well and truly gone. :D:P :hap:

Hey AV which pet shop is this? I have been thinking about getting my empty tank going again so they sound like as good a place as any for supplies.

The one near me Burwood Birds and Pets the are closing down so their fish stock is limited but everything has 25% off, live birds are 10%. So it's good buying there are the moment if you want to get something. The have some really nice big fancy goldfish (what brain tumor is) I wanted to take more but worried about over crowding the tank, but I think i will go back next week and get some more female fighting fish and Platy's as the tropical tank could take a few more I think. They are all so pretty, wish I could spend time at home tomorrow and just watch them!

My other half loves fish and has three fish tanks so if we ever get around to moving in together we have talked about getting a massive tank and having a tropical fish set up. Also in a few years I want to try my hand at a marine setup but they cost alot, but I want nemo (clown) fish!

I know it's so said but business just hasnot been good for them so they are closing down. I am really worried about what is going to happen to Ollie the king parrot that they have in there. If you are heading over give me a yell and will see if we can have a sticky together.

Hee hee, they are soo cute.

Tsk tsk AV!

I know I was watching them last night and thinking "Hmmm I really could fit a few more in there" ;)

I'm so sorry AV :( was the temperature okay on the tank? That's the reason we gave up on tropical fish, they kept dying and yet other people keep them for years with no problems at all :)

Hope you get it all sorted out :)

What about the nitrite and nitrate levels? When you put lots of fish into a new system, too much nitrite/nitrate (can never remember which one) is produced and this pollutes the water. This is why it is best to start off with only a few fish as the nitrite levels build up slower and you should be able to remove enough in the next water change to keep them healthy.

This is what happened with my fish. I had 2 goldfish and lost one 2 weeks later due to nitrate levels increasing (I got the water tested). The way to fix this is do a water change a little more frequently. The levels stabilise once your tank has cycled and the appropriate bacteria has colonised the the filters and gravel.

Unfortunately the nitrogen ammonia cycle doesn't start until you add fish to your tank. So you can reduce this by adding less fish and by taking some gravel from the old tank.

As your tank cycles and matures you can add more fish.
