Posted August 21, 200816 yr okay! I am either ANGRY or SAD I can't choose yet I have noticed that my birds aren't as weighty as they should be .... The ones in the Aviary are okay - Not under weight But i would like more meat on them of you know what I mean .... Then the 2 that are in side tame ones .... Mac is slightly under he is going through his molt at the moment and no mater what I give him he has never but weight on ( i can't feel his breast bone) But there isn't a lot of weight on him either ... Now Princess. Huh :hap: That's another story ... She is eating like a piggy but i can still feel her bone ( she is 6 weeks old ) All birds get a seed mix of Canary, White millet,Safflower Seed & linseed . They get Veggies and in summer stone fruits They aren't apple and pear eaters Every now and then I make up a fruit juice from them ... WHAT CAN I DO Oh I add sunflower seeds once a week into their mix But 5 times out of 10 they don't eat it ... HULLED OATS ., Soaked or not they don't touch it .... Um mm Egg and Biccy mix they eat it ( i usually use that for when they are breeding )
August 21, 200816 yr Sounds to me like you are doing everything right :hap: Perhaps add the sunflower seeds and hulled oats in another seed dish everyday so they can eat them if they want, but you don't waste as mush - some will eat them some will not. My inside birds have less weight than the outside ones too. I think its the artificial climate that keeps them thinner as they dont need the extra fat to keep warm.
August 21, 200816 yr Author Really ... It is horrible .. I feel like it would be a Docs case lol ... I will give it a go - I think i will buy TRILL seed I bought a little packet the other night to see what is in it and it has EVERYTHING !! Edited August 21, 200816 yr by Neat
August 21, 200816 yr Trill has a lot of junk seed in it. I still use it occasionally but its expensive and there is a lot more waste
August 21, 200816 yr Neat some birds never get real fat they vary lots, others get overweight, I guess the same as with humans. A bird at 6 weeks wouldn’t have put on that much condition I would think they get meatier as they mature about the same time that they finish their first moult. Some of mine don’t eat much Safflower or Hulled oats, some seem to eat more Sunflower. Your diet seems perfect I wouldn’t worry unless the birds seem ill. Some birds will get fat in small cages, but I think most of them build up muscle when they have the use of a large aviary to build up their bodies. If some had real sharp breastbones I would worry. My birds have never got any fruit juices.
August 21, 200816 yr Author Ahhh okay awesome Norm...Touch wood I haven't had a sick budgie since Shayanne and Commache and they were bought Birds with PBFD & etc ... So I just keep doing what I am doing .... I think it is because they do have Large aviaries and aren't over crowed, with plenty of exercise ... So i won't worry then I'll be grateful that they are Healthy Birds
August 21, 200816 yr So i won't worry then I'll be grateful that they are Healthy Birds Neat's budgies ---> :D
August 21, 200816 yr Author I will make sure that I do not use tin corn anymore too .... It is 40% water sugar and salt Not good ... So I will back to the Good stuff again!
August 21, 200816 yr I agree with Norm he has made perfect sense we can't all be skinny , I think sometimes reading all the members issues that comes here makes us paranoid that our own birds are always sick.
August 21, 200816 yr My guys where never into oats untill i put them in a seperate dish by them selves now they are the first thing to go from the seed mix!
August 21, 200816 yr I have the same issue with Gucci and Dolce. They are about 8 weeks old and seem skinny. Gypsy, who is living in the outside aviary feel 'fatter'. I'm trying hulled oats and sunflower seeds, also with not much luck. They seem happy and healthy so I am too... but will be watchful!
August 21, 200816 yr My babies always seem to go through a skinny stage just as they are starting to leave the nest and then it takes a little while for them to put it back on, I think it is a reduction in food from mum and dad trying to get them to wean

August 22, 200816 yr My guys where never into oats untill i put them in a seperate dish by them selves now they are the first thing to go from the seed mix! Mine too...they go mad on hulled oats. I serve it in a seperate dish.
August 22, 200816 yr Author Hmm funny you guys mention that. I was reading a breeders conversation and they use separate dishes for separate seeds .. I might give that a go.
August 23, 200816 yr You are supposed to be able to feel their keel bone. Just like you are supposed to be able to feel your dog's ribs. It is the layer over it that is the main thing. The bones should not stick out, but should feel like they have a nice layer of padding over them, so that the bones have "soft" curves. Feel your own ribs. You can feel them, but you aren't horribly skinny and underweight. (If I have offended peoples I am sorry.) Sorry there are no body condition score charts for budgies. Plenty for cows, horses, cats and dogs though. Edited August 23, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
