Posted August 21, 200816 yr So I duck out at lunch to go see this breeder in St Kilda and have a look at his set up. So i am having a chat to him and I notice two normal/sky blue boys in a breeding cage so I start really looking at his birds he has mostly normals (so sexing them is a little easier the some of the other mutations) and he is telling me how he loves to breed but really only on average about 4 cages get eggs out of his bank of 20 odd. So I am looking and looking and I realise that he has a bunch of pairs that are same sexed I point this out to him and say "I might be wrong but they are both cocks right" he looks and tells me not to be silly, he has been breeding for 5 years now he knows a cock from a hen.... So I smile, we finish up, he tries to sell me this hen (it was a cock I am sure of it) I decline and then go back to work. I e-mail another breeder I know from my club about some of his birds as I know someone who is looking for one and I ask does he know breeder X, he calls me to make sure that I had not bought any birds from the breeder and laughs as he tells me about the breeder arguing with Judges over the sex of his birds! So just cause you breed does not me you know everything! Just thought you might like a laugh for the day!
August 21, 200816 yr Haha Great point AV! And what a funny way to tell people that! LOL! Love it... Someones a bit of a nutter i think
August 21, 200816 yr :D Sexing is not that hard really!!! - he must be a pretty lousy breeder to not know how to tell gender of basic types
August 21, 200816 yr Author :D Sexing is not that hard really!!! - he must be a pretty lousy breeder to not know how to tell gender of basic types I know what I am doing with the normals but the inos and some of the pieds and I start to second guess myslef but the normals come on! Also argue with a Judge about hens vs cock. If I went to a club meet and they told me that the Hen was a Cock not a Hen I would say fine... the only time I would argue with them is if I physically saw her lay and egg! sometimes the so called experts are the worst I know he was a bit of a know it all anyway but then this was just the icing on the cake!
August 21, 200816 yr Wouldnt you think his lack of success with breeding would make him ask questions of what is he doing wrong Hillarious I think
August 21, 200816 yr Come on people, the guy could be going through a rough breeding patch. He has had so many sterile birds !!!! Edited August 22, 200816 yr by maesie changed eb to be
August 21, 200816 yr Come on people, the guy could eb going through a rough breeding patch. he has had so many sterile birds !!!! :D
August 21, 200816 yr Come on people, the guy could eb going through a rough breeding patch. he has had so many sterile birds !!!! Might be worth paying him a visit and see if he is culling any nice "sterile" birds :P
August 21, 200816 yr Maybe you should ask him how he sexes his birds. Tell him a vet told you that boys are blue and girls are brown.
August 21, 200816 yr Author He had some really nice be grey ones might see if they are none breeders and take them a avairy fills!
August 21, 200816 yr Wouldnt you think his lack of success with breeding would make him ask questions of what is he doing wrong Hillarious I think You'd think so wouldn't you It takes all kinds I suppose
August 21, 200816 yr Author I guess some people are not prepared to take advise or research enough to get it right. Just cause you can do it does not mean you should do it!
August 21, 200816 yr What I put it down to Av is this, Most Show Breeders that have been doing it for years, get offended when Us young-ens ( well I'm not that young anymore : ( ) have advice. Even though we have spent the time in researching and asking questions and etc - We are still not good enough in their eyes .. But hey NEVER LOOK AT GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH eh? I'd be buying plenty of those Non Breeders :D
August 21, 200816 yr Author My only thing is that another breeder warned me off buying from him so might have to talk to breeder A and find out what is wring with his birds. If nothing other then he can't tell a cock from a hen I might have to go on a shopping spree!
August 21, 200816 yr haha, what you should do is, buy his non-breeder and breed it!! Then tell him how isn't it amazing how you got all these babies from his "sterile" ones. Make sure too, if he sells you a hen as a cock, tell him you paired that "cock" up with another cock and it made babies.
August 21, 200816 yr Hey maybe he needs to be told that his birds are all bi-sexual and start pairing them up that way. Who know this guy sound so thick he'd probably do it and be amazed when they actually start laying eggs. :hap: :hap: :hap:Oops I mean Homosexual!!!!!
August 21, 200816 yr Author I just find it strange that people who put alot of time and money into the setups and then miss something as simple as what sex the birds are! I know with some of mine if in doubt i would just post here and ask or if they failed last season split the pair up but I guess not everyone thinks the way i do
August 21, 200816 yr Anyone thought that maybe he is colour blind? I thought of that BUT Daz is colourblind and he still manages to work out his cocks from hens without too much trouble.
August 21, 200816 yr There are a couple of different types of colour blindness though. My grandfather suffers from total colourblindness, he sees his world in shades of grey

I know with some of mine if in doubt i would just post here and ask or if they failed last season split the pair up but I guess not everyone thinks the way i do Sounds good in theory AV…but I had a Fallow that I thought looked like a cock [from his head shape etc] but when I put him with a hen nothing happened. So I put a picture of him on here & asked for help…sob…no one was game to even take a guess. Not a word…so I kept trying him first with a hen then a cock…with a cock he was very pally, but nothing happened… with a hen nothing happened not even friendly, eventually I tried him with a few hens, one eventually went down on eggs…so now I definitely know he’s a cock, as the first chick has hatched, I think it’s a Fallow, as the hen is split.
August 21, 200816 yr Author Yeah Norm but there is a big difference between unsure about one and attempting to work it out and only have a strike rate on 4 in 20!
