Posted March 9, 200520 yr Hi, I have a question. Why is millit so tasty to a budgie? I mean, isn't it just seed?
March 9, 200520 yr im not sure. but i know that giving millit to a budgie is like a human eating a marathon every day. i.e not healthy.
March 9, 200520 yr Do you know how much we should be giving them? I have given mine some out of my hand just to let it know that my hand is a good thing and to get it used to being handled.
March 9, 200520 yr I heard that if you give it too much noot only will it become obese it will also only eat the millet!
March 9, 200520 yr Millet is high in carbohydrates, and for some reason birds find it extremely tasty. Carbohydrates make you want to eat more. :glare:
March 12, 200520 yr they've also got a high level of fat in them which is palatable to birdies (and most animals.) Also, i think my birds just like the mess it makes... :bluebudgie:
March 12, 200520 yr I don't know the scientific reason but my guess is that for the birds it's the equivalent of say the choice between a plain biscuit or a bar of Cadburys chocolate-one is better for you,but which one would you prefer! Julie :blow:
March 12, 200520 yr Author Hmm, okay. Blinkie can strip a millit spray in about 15 minutes!!! I think he's trying to beat his personal best!!!
March 13, 200520 yr Hi, I have a question. Why is millit so tasty to a budgie? I mean, isn't it just seed? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not all budgies like it. Beekle seems indifferent to it. If you put some in reach of his beak he'll nibble it a bit but will soon lose interest and fly back to his cage for seed or broccoli. Edited March 13, 200520 yr by AndrueC
March 15, 200520 yr Yeah Candy used to go mad for millet but has since gone off it and prefers his seed, spinach, green cabbage and of course his ever fattening honey bells!
March 15, 200520 yr I got my pair a honey stick yesterday and this morning, it's completely bare! I think i''m gonna have to stop giving them so many treats cos they're gonna end up looking like two fluffy bowling balls on legs! They love their millet as well - it's the only time bob will come to me, if i have millet in my hand
March 15, 200520 yr okay so how much millet do you think would be okay for a treat now and again? i do have a few sprays of millet but never sure how much he should be allowed.
March 16, 200520 yr il usually give my guys millet once a month whenever i actually have some and i put 2 honey sticks in maby once a week i dont have to worry about my birdies beign fat though .. Snow will burn it all off because shes a hypermaniac and Birdie needs it hes skinney! but hes a hypermaniac too and tweety adn buddy will just pull the seeds off the honey stick and millet and ohh look a big pile good seed at the bottom of the cage... wasters!
March 16, 200520 yr :(Laughing out loud): One often wonders if anyone reads the packet contents when they buy there favorite budgie mix Surprise yes it contains a certain amount of millet well it should unless it?s a cheap mix I grow millet in the garden and give it fresh off the bush leaves an all they just love it About every 3 days So depending how big your budget is and how much you love your birds Feed them as much as you think is necessary But remember never feed a bird plants from the garden unless you know what they are
