Hot Sandwich Makers And Birds Don't Mix!

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right spot.

Today I let Charlie out to show some friends. My older sisiter had a sandwich maker on and STUPID me didn't put him back in the cage instead I let him fly around . The people I was showing him to were only young and started chasing him as I was trying to get him back in his cage because he was scaring my older sister ( she hates birds!!). He got really scared and landed on the sandwich maker!!! Once he landed on it he flew staight off and landed on the table and started picking it his feet ( mum and I have noticed this before but he was really stuck into them). Once I caught him I put him back in his cage and he started making a really loud noice ( screaching and chirping). When mum got home I told her what happened and she pulled him out and had a look at him to see if he was badly burnt. He didn't look to badly burnt. While mum was looking at him she noticed his chest was still really boney and he doesn't have much flesh on him. Anyway, When mum was looking at him I noticed that some of his tail feathers were a little brown from landing on the sandwich maker.

When Charlie landed on the sandwich maker as I said he flew off and landed on the table I caught him and as I picked him up he started screaching when he walked up my arm.

Now I am really worried about him because we can't tell how bad he was burnt!!! Should I take him to the vet and get him checked out?

Marlo

I would take him to a vet Mralo. Have you got an avian vet? If not tell us where in Melbourne you are we might be able to recommend someone. Also for the time being I would bathe his fett in some cool water.

How do you bathe a budgies feet?

I just dunk my guys feet in water, normally they bum and everything else gets wet as well. Do look into getting him to a vet to be on the safe side.

How is he now????

If you didn't get to put him in water right away there is no point in doing that now. as the burn *hopefully not bad

would have blistered in a matter of minutes - I think that you should take him to a vet perferably an avain vet and get them to have a look at his feet - the squiching and chirping was cause he was in pain from the burn - He will need to see the vet as an infection could occur if it is burnt ....

Burns are good at developing infections.

YOu can still dip his feet in cool water as I'm sure that would give some relief. Give him a little jar lid of water to stand in, then he can choose whether or not he wants to stand in it

Good advise as been given, so let us know what you decide and keep us updated.

Wash his feet in warm water with saline added - Put Aloe Vera Jel onto his feet and call a vet to see what can be done - The main thing is to prevent an infection Keep him warm....

Not warm water, cool (officially it's tepid  ) water as burn can still be made worse by warm water even after the fact. The saline water won't hurt but it should be cooled to room temp before use.

Don't forget Bepanthen cream helps burns if you can't get to a vet, although you'd need to stop him picking at it, perhaps an Elizabethan collar?

is tempid warm????

Ah well here i go again

Any updates on the little guy :D

Well everyone,

Charlie has been fine mum said and if he gets worse I will try the Bepanthen. We haven't dunked his feet in the cool water. Mum had a look at his last night and they don't look to bad!!! :D Which is good but I will keep you updated on how he is going!!

I can! After our experience with poor little Fizzer I absolutely recommend Dr Sasha at Lort Smith in North Melbourne. She was awesome and if people are on a limited budget, it's good to know that you can pay off the consultation fee in instalments rather than all in one hit. And they are a great organisation too.

Again - Dr Sasha (I am a new fan) told my son to bathe his budgies feet because he also has a budgie who has gout. She said that a shallow dish of cold water in their cage is fine and they will self-seek something that feels soothing.

Cherry juice is great for gout in birds too :D

Cool water straight after a burn is best (it is probably too late now). The idea is to cool the area down so the residual heat and inflammation doesn't cause further damage than what was done at the time of contact.

I hope he is okay. You mentioned he felt thin with a bony chest. A bird doesn't lose weight overnight. If he is thin it means there is something else going on with his health. What is he eating? What do his poos look like? Is he active or does he sit around not doing much?

I was also wondering if the sandwich maker is made of Teflon? Teflon fumes are toxic to birds, so it shouldn't be used near birds. Of course, nothing should be cooking when a bird is out. But Teflon fumes can kill birds if they are in the same room.

But teflon only releases fumes if it is heated dry, so as long as you don't overheat it and you put atleast something moist like butter or oil on it before it gets really hot then it shouldn't release any fumes

Well,

Charlie is always full of energy!!LOL!! We feed him the home brand of food. But we have lately notice that he is picking at his food not eating it!He is eating his food but not much of it!! His poos are a light green with the white dot in the middle.

I'm not sure what the sndwich maker is made of. I will tell you when I ask my mum.

Home brand is often older and it loses it's nutritional value the older it gets. With only one budgie it won't be expensive to feed him a better quality seed.

My mum said once the home brand runs out we will go back to the trill.

what is the best stuff to feed baby budgies?

How old, do you mean chicks or young birds? Chicks should get a raising mix, young birds just a good seed, vegies and a vitamin/mineral supplement is what mine get ;)

Also if he is already thin I would recommend getting the cockatiel mix this time as it has a few extra seeds in it which are a little fattier to help him get the weight back on.

Well charlie is about 8 weeks I think. We have only just got him fruit. We feed him apples. Also what other fruits can you give birds?

In summer I give them stone fruit like peaches (but not too much as it gets the bowels moving), on hot days watermelon is a nice treat. I don't feed much fruit, mainly vegies. Mine get apple, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, silverbeet, celery and bok choy pus a sprinkle of frozen peas and corn. ;)
