Assignment task outline: Class Arachnida

You are to provide an extended response in the form of a 10 -15 min presentation that discusses the features of a particular phylum, sub-phylum or class from the animal kingdom. You must discuss the distinguishing features of your chosen group and demonstate an understanding of key concepts and ideas involved in biological taxonomy. You are also required to collect and organise secondary data and draw meaningful conclusions that may include the evolutionary nature of the group, it's adaptations and environmental impact.

This is my year 11 biology assignment. I have pritty much got all I can get from the internet just wondering if anyone studies that in uni or TAFE etc and just wondering if you had any info on this subject if you could post it please as I really need some help. If you do post info please reference it. Thank you

Well some members of Arachnida are parasites. Like ticks and mites. Ticks have very interesting life cycles and can have up to 3 different hosts in their lifecycles. Ticks can be vectors for many diseases and some species like Ixodes holocyclus can cause their host to be paralysed by releasing toxins into their body.

Mites can be free living or parasitic. Some live in the nose of dogs, some live in the airsacs of birds and on the organs. Some mites live in your bed!

Members of the class Arachnida typically have 4 pairs of legs.

Some well known ones:

Spiders

Scorpions

Ticks

Mites

Reference: My head

Due to their small size and limited dispersal abilities mites which live on tree sap can be seperated by only a few metres but still be very different. In a rainforest there may be a different species of mite occupying each tree!

WOW this is all way over my head. I'm just a domestic goddess without a brain now :hap:

Denise I am with you on that one :hap:

Yep, I don't mind admitting I'm dumb when it comes to this sort of thing :hap:

Hey some of us aren't domestic goddesses yet, we can afford to spend time learning random stuff. You guys have 3 different jobs to manage: child care, home cleaning and paid job. So there!

hmm... nano-arachnids really really tiny ones.

Greek mythology Arachne the great weaver, I wonder if she was a domestic goddess?

Another interesting thought. Our bodies are like planets for mite parasites, hmm, are humans earth parasites!

I'm a domestic goddess SW ^_^ That being said it has taken eight years to learn enough random stuff to finish my three year degree :budgiedance:

Well almost every mammal has demodex mites living in their follicles. Even us!!! They live on us as commensals and don't affect us and most animals. But some dogs can have a few porblems with them and develop demodicosis. We don't get that. The way to find out if you have demodex is to pull out an eyelash and have a look on the microscope. If you have some, they might be there looking up at you waving with their little legs. I think they are kinda cute little mites. They aren't ugly buggers. People with oily skin are more likely to have them.

Do they prefer oily skin or cause it? You'd think dry skin would be there 'thing'
