PSITTACOSIS –

Psittacosis disease is a potential problem for bird owners!!!!

The symptoms are like that of the cold and flu SO MAKE SURE YOU ADVISE YOUR DR THAT HAVE BIRDS!!!!!

Birds with bacterial infections resembles birds with Psittacosis – There are a huge number of different types of bacteria that can cause diseases in birds – THE MOST SERIOUS ONES cause Septicemia ( The build up of Poisons in the bloodstream)

Gram Negative Bacterial Infections

Birds like ourselves carry bacteria Good and Bad Called Gram Positive ( Good) Gram Negative ( bad). The negatice one is usually the one that causes the problems with birds. – Vet will need to place the bird on a course of antibiotics and get swab samples sent away so they know what is the best antibiotic to use for that specific infections.

There are many gram positive bacteria that are bad and are pathogenic. The gram positive and gram negative categories of bacteria refer to the bacterial cell wall. Gram negative bacteria have thicker walls as they have an extra lipopolysacharide layer that the Gram postives do not have. Gram negatives tend to be more pathogenic than gram positives. E.coli is an example of a Gram negative.

Some bacteria do not have cell walls that stain or have no cell walls at all, so are not classified as gram positive or negative. Examples of these are acid-fast staining mycobacterium (tuberculosis family).

I will add more later.
