Ringing Question

Hey Guys, \

not sure if this is in the right spot, if not sorry and thanks for re locating :D

okay I was thinking to day with they ringing of the birds. Now babies born lets say in 08 get rung with what ever the color is ring .. SO a baby that is born in Jan 2008 and a baby born in Dec 2008 do they both have the same colour ring or is the dec bird rung with a 09 ring??

See where I am getting with this?

Cause if they are rung with the same ring then there is 11 months difference with them and Well how does the breeding age come into this? ...

I hope I haven't confused you...

Yes they would generally be rung with the same ring, a breeder should have on record which part of the year the bird was rung in though :D

Oh. Hmmmm Best to buy from a Breeder that keeps records then :D

Thanks Libb

yep, or one that has a photographic memory :D

Remember there's always ones who look young and you can tell, but if you've owned them since half way through that year and they were fully grown when you got them you then know by mid next year they'll be good to go :hap:

LOL, I didn't even think about that :D ... Goes to show where my head is at LOL

Yep, so That now was a pretty sillish question,

I know that some breeders try and group their ring numbers. One breeder I was at caught a bird read the number and said the bird was born Feb/Mar and looked it up and he was right. the lower the number the earlier the bird was hatched. However not sure this is the norm but a good idea if you ask me,

I don't know much about how the ringing systems work, but if they're numbered, surely it is a logical thing to put the lowest numbers on teh firstborn of the year, and move up through the numbers as new chicks hatch? That way, the earlier the number, the earlier in the year the bird hatched? Sounds common sense... Breeders, would there be any reasons why a breeder would do it differently?

That is exactly how it is done ^_^

Generally that is how it is done. But some clubs have special awards for birds. In our club we have a derby system in that your first 10 rings are the derby rings and they are placed on the chiks that you hope will do well.

It is a bit like a lotto. So ring 1 could go on the first bred and ring 10 could go on a bird hatch 4 months latter.

Nar thanks Heaps Daz. Where would I be without you .....

I will speak to my club ans see how they do things - I am sooo looking forward to getting in to the shows

This year the rings for 2009 will be available in the middle of December. You can ring the chicks from then.

The new 2010 rings will be available from the 1st September 2009.

So any bird that is hatched after 1st September 2009 will have a 2010 ring on it's leg.

Thanks for that Daz, I had heard it was changing, but still hadn’t heard the actual date.
