Posted July 25, 200816 yr Today I drove down to Deb's place to deliver her two chicks that had been plucked by their mother and I had put them in with an excellent forster mother I have. All their feathers had grown back and were looking gorgeous! Well just after I got home I checked on my expectant mothers and found a tiny pink lttle blob half way out of its egg! I rushed upstairs and grabbed the camera but by that time it was completely out and here' s the bub only 30 seconds old. So if you do a good deed for someone, its great when good things come your way too!!! Geez, its only just hatched! Go away with your flashing lights please!! I did a good job, eh?? July 25, 200816 yr Awsome and what a tiny, weenie, little cutie... I'm glad good karma has come your way!!!
July 25, 200816 yr Author Congratulations!! I am yet to see a little one hatch It is quite amazing to watch Liv. I have seen it quite a few times. It starts 24 hours or more with them chipping away inside all the way around the egg and then pushing and squirming till they are out!! Wish I had videoed it!!After 3 hours and he had still not been fed so I put him under another hen who is sitting on very young ones as well so he wouldnt get any weaker (he wasnt moving much and not chirping). He has now been fed. If his mother gets the hang of feeding her chicks once the rest of the eggs hatch, I will put him back under her, if not he will stay where he is.
July 25, 200816 yr Doesn't suprise me he became weak, he looked very fragile as though he'd been trapped in there for a while and de-hydrated
July 25, 200816 yr Author Doesn't suprise me he became weak, he looked very fragile as though he'd been trapped in there for a while and de-hydrated Yes Libby I thought that too. I heard him chirping inside the egg probably 36 hours before he actually hatched. Hope he makes it!
July 25, 200816 yr Wow, Good things comes to those that do good I hope that mummy picks up with the feeding - Lib, what is the dosage for that sugar water so I can write it down just in case
July 26, 200816 yr Author Good news! Another chick from this clutch hatched last night and has been fed! So I might put the first baby back in with his mum and dad and see what happens.
July 26, 200816 yr Author I was devastated this morning when I checked on my babies. The chick in the photo (Karma -named by Kaz) had died during the night. There wasnt any food in its crop so that stupid @#$#@ of a mother hadnt fed him. I put his sibling in with another hen so it doesnt suffer the same fate. I dont get it - they were fine yesterday and had full crops?
July 26, 200816 yr Biggest hugs my luv xoxo I'm really sorry for your loss. Sometimes they are just not cut out to be mothers... and just don't know what to do. As to why Karma was okay yesterday and not this morning??? Maybe s/he died from something else... not not being fed. Was it cold? etc... It's hard to say but regardless of the reason, it's very sad. I hope more babies hatch and your foster Mum continues doing a great job.

She is sitting on 4 more eggs so we'll see what happens with them. I was cold last night but the hen sits on the nest 24/7 and I have a light on for them so if they do get scared off for some reason they can easily find their way. I will put it down to bad luck and fingers crossed the rest will be okay.
July 27, 200816 yr Sorry to hear this Jenene Sometimes when you lose a one day old it doesn't seem significant, but when you've put in alot of effort from the get go and become attach to it it definatly hurts
July 27, 200816 yr Very sorry to hear that Jenene. I would say Mum didnt pull the chick under her to keep it warm and it died from the cold.
July 27, 200816 yr Author Oh No, ... Jenene, I am soo sorry for your loss - How is the other one doing? Hi Neat I put the other one back with a foster mother as I didnt want to risk losing his too. He is going well and is being fed.But while I was at work this afternoon another one hatched from the original nest and she has fed it so I will be keeping an eagle eye on her. Actually I have two new bubs hatch today!!
