Do Budgies Actually Enjoy Flying?

Featured Replies

well, i've noticed that Bing tries to avoid flying as much as he can, he hates to do it and gets stressed and scared when he does, is this normal? because i let him out of his cage and he never flies ever! the only time he will fly is when i accidently bump his perch or something and that is all...

is their a way i can make him enjoy flying or will he just always hate it?

and are all budgies like this?

P.S I'm not saying i don't like him as i love him he's my best friend  but i just would like some info

thanks in advance i know I post alot of questions and annoy the heck out of you guys

I would say it depends on how well they know how to do it and how much practice they have had. I aviary bird freaks out if you clip their wings and they cant fly. But a bird who has always been clipped from a young age, and has used walking and climbing as their way to get around, then yes i would think they would find it scary to fly when they are not used to it.

I agree, sounds like bing never learnt to fly!

This is why we encourage babies to fly prior to clipping :D

How much space do you give him to fly, I really believe that budgies in the wild and in an aviary setting fly more because it is more natural and they are foraging for food. I haven't visited many aviaries but I bet that aviaries that provide the foraging and folage tend to fly more. Also the more birds you have the more flight you will see a single bird is not going to fly here and there, there is no reason for him to do so he wants to be by you and you don't fly. BUT if you have another one or a flock they will fly more because they follow each other. I don't personally think it is because he doesn't enjoy or doesn't know how I just believe he doesn't have a purpose to fly.

I do write this through personal experience because when Pretty was alive he didn't fly much but when Merlin came along they did fly more and when 1 took off the other one did too, now that I just have Merlin he doesn't fly much either because his partner (myself) doesn't fly but if I got up he would follow me and fly and that gives him a purpose. If you have a budgie that sits on your shoulder all the time when you walk around then why should they fly.

well i know Bing can fly as when i was first training him he would get very scared and circle the room before landing on his cage, and he has never been clipped, but it seems that he hates it and really dislikes having to fly, he will only fly if he feels threatened and wont ever like fly from place to place, i know its only been 5 months but he still isnt very adventurous and doesnt explore very much and i would like him to be worry free and not scared

but it is never going to happen if he doesnt even try :D

Did you read my reason above, this is true this is why he won't fly if you want him to fly you need to give him a reason .

Train him to fly to you on command and give him a treat.

Budgies may like flying as much as we like running. Some people enjoy it more than others and you are more likely to go running and keep it up if you have a running partner.

It's the whole exercise thing. I notice that the less budgies I have the less flying they do. My outside monsters fly all the time. My inside monsters just like to sit and fat on the perches.

I think he is just being lazy then :) Like Elly said, if he hasn't reason to fly, why waste the energy hehe

well i always have a treat in my hand when he is out but he never flys to me, hes never actually flown to me to be with me he only flies to me because im the only perch and great landing pad but never wants to be with me, i put him on my shoulder and give him millet and talk to him, he stays for 30 seconds then flies away

Andrew, keep working with him he will soften up and start to want to be by you more, it took Pretty almost a year to start to want to be by me and after Pretty died it took Merlin about a year too where he would come too me. Birds care cautious creatures they have too be or be eaten so don't worry you are doing everything right.
