Posted July 12, 200816 yr I am really impressed. Last night just before I fell into bed there was a knock on the door. The lady down the road and her 9 year old son Seems he wants a Budgie and my next door neighbor who they are good friends with told them to come see me as I have them. So I show them in, show them all my guys and the mother asks if her son (Brandon) come and help me a few morning a week to see what is really involved with looking after a bird. I say sure (hey free help will take what I can get!) So at 6.30am today there is a knock on my door and we get ready. First off I explain to him that some of my birds are in Quarantine and why and said that we would do them last. So we go outside and do the guys outside. I tell him who each bird is, we catch Blue and show him wing, break and feet. Explain how to tell a boy from a girl and also color mutations, the kid is a quick study cause he started asking all these questions half I could not answer! Anyway he fell in love with DQ, loves her colours and asked me if I would every have babies with the same mutation. if I every get Kadaj well then I will put the two together and hopefully have same colour chicks. Then we did the guys in the study, We had a play with Buddy and the quick little guy he is asked why Buddy's wings are strange (he has his wings clipped) so I showed him that and explained the pros and cons. We did the feed for the guys and washed all the bowls. He was being so careful to measure out only a few drops of Cod Liver oil for lemon and lime. We then did the Quarantine guys, while we where doing everyone and changing the bottom of the cages I pointed out the budgies poop to him, with the Quarantine guys he kept asking him what was different. he was very good, also he picked the discharge around the cere and tail bobbing.... smart kid. I think I sounded like a nut talking to a 10 year old about budgie poop but hey he has to learn sometime right? Anyway his mum came down to pick him up at about 8.30am, and she showed her DQ and then Kadaj and was telling her how when they have chicks he would like one but he has to learn more. I gave him to read my Budgie books and he asked if he could come and help me do the rounds in the mornings which I am more then happy for him to do cause it means if he can do them that if I go away I have someone who knows what they are doing. he has also offered to help me paint the Budgie Breeding room. So really lets see if he is still interested in helping me but I think he is converted!
July 13, 200816 yr sounds great If he is willing to learn all now and also willing to wait for a little friend to grow up from an egg I think he will be a great owner!
July 13, 200816 yr Great stuff!!! A kid who get up that early and has even offered to help paint... we have a winner. He sounds like a great kid and I hope he continues to show interest...
July 13, 200816 yr Wow he sound like a great animal carer in the making. It's awesome when you meet someone so interested. And when he's older he will pass on his passion.
July 14, 200816 yr Author Well he rocked up at 6.15am today and did most of it as I sat there drinking coffee also read all the instructions that the vet left and asked if he could come with me to the vet tonight when I take Boof. So I figure he is going well will have to see if he can keep it up.
July 14, 200816 yr Author A keen young man like that deserves reward at some point in the future :hap: If he stays intrested he will be allowed to pick the chick that he wants and I will not charge him for the babay. Not to mention that when I go away if he is up to it I will pay him to look after my birds so he can make some money on the side! :hap:
