July 11, 200816 yr NEAT’S FOUND FACTS #6 Because of the rotation of the earth, an object can be thrown further if it is thrown West. That is really interesting
July 11, 200816 yr Number 6. : Not further in relation to you, but further in relation to the point of where it was thrown from, seeing as you move with the earth. Sailorwolf's fact: Time goes slower the higher up you are. You won't notice it though, because your brain is also going slower. I don't know how the physics of it work, but apparently it is true. They compare watches are something I guess. Number 4. I wonder if it depends on which way force is applied. It would. Horizontal as opposed to vertical. July 11, 200816 yr yeh apparently if you fly in a jet for your whole life your life will be extended by 2 seconds or something like that (my science teacher told me that but i cant remember the whole story)
July 11, 200816 yr Oh, what a cool idea for a thread, I hope I can join in (when I'm more awake), I have a whole bunch of them. Regarding #4 - that is only comparing compressive forces in the same direction as the shaft of the bone ie how much the bone can be 'squished' (this is important as we are standing, walking and jumping on the bones every day). When you apply perpendicular and especially shear forces it's pretty weak, which is why spiral and transverse fractures are common. (Wow, I actually learned something in Biomedical Physics!) Sailorwolf - that's Einstein's general relativity. It's because gravity has an effect on time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation if anyone has the time (and brain space) to read up on it. Pretty heavy physics/maths there though. Hey, I have a bunch of weird animal knowledge, maybe I can start a list too. Chryso's weird animal #1: Cymothoa exigua is a crustacean that parasitises fish. First it attaches itself to the tongue of the fish and extracts blood with its legs. Due to lack of the blood the tongue starts to die. The parasite then attaches itself to the tongue muscles, replacing the fish's tongue with its own body. The fish can then use the parasite to manipulate food, having a whole other animal for a tongue! Hehe. Edited July 11, 200816 yr by Chrysocome
July 11, 200816 yr Grapes explode when you put them in the microwave. well i can just see me having to try this one (yes i'm weird like that)
July 12, 200816 yr urrgh. I hate that parasite. Candles turn into plasma in the microwave (apparently) and soap froths up into a big solid ball. Flying in a jet plane for your whole life would actually shorten it, because 1 flight from New Zealand to America is equivalent to 3 chest X-rays. This is because you are more exposed to cosmic Xradiation because you are closer to space. Thus the more you fly the more likely you are to develop cancer. People exposed to Xrays the most: Pilots, astronauts, doctors, veterinarians and dentists, . Edited July 12, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
July 12, 200816 yr The parasite and fish fact is very interesting, gross as it is it does amaze me how nature works and how these aniimals know just want to do it really makes you think WOW. I enjoy watching the Discovery or the Animal Planet just to watch the amazing phenomonans.

July 14, 200816 yr I love #9 - it is an urban myth circulated entirely by internet. Just google Lisa Holst and spiders. This "statistic" was not only made up out of whole cloth, it was invented as an example of the absurd things people will believe simply because they come across them on the Internet. In a 1993 PC Professional article, columnist Lisa Holst wrote about the ubiquitous lists of "facts" that were circulating via e-mail and how readily they were accepted as truthful by gullible recipients. To demonstrate her point, Holst offered her own made-up list of equally ridiculous "facts," among which was the statistic cited above about the average person's swallowing eight spiders per year, which she took from a collection of common misbeliefs printed in a 1954 book on insect folklore. In a delicious irony, Holst's propagation of this false "fact" has spurred it into becoming one of the most widely-circulated bits of misinformation to be found on the Internet. Just debunking that one there
July 14, 200816 yr Author Ahhh Chryo tell me if this one is true NEAT’S FOUND FACTS #44 It is physically impossible for pigs to look up to the sky.
July 14, 200816 yr Had to think about that one - didn't know it for sure. I think it depends on your definition - they most certainly can if they roll over! Googling it seemed to mix it up with a similiar debate over whether or not that dogs can physically look up either. But look at these - http://thisislavergne.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/pig.jpg http://bp3.blogger.com/_s6Jh7xoynGw/Rr-oSr...20/headshot.jpg http://www.fadingad.com/blog/brooklyn/emmett_pig01.jpg Just by looking at the shape of the neck muscles - especially the weighty ones - it seems like they can't point their skulls vertically like we can but I still reckon they can look skyward with their heads like that. July 14, 200816 yr I'd hate to think about the amount of bird feathers, bird dust and bird poop we consume due to our love for birds :X
July 15, 200816 yr Author Neither can an Emu MB - That is why they are our National Emblems as we will only go forward and never back ............So Rabbits are Born Hairless with the eyes shut While Hares are born with Fur and open eyes ???
July 16, 200816 yr I've seen an emu walk backwards, that's a load of bull ****. They can also kick backwards too (we got warned in our wildlife lecture). Therefore if they can kick backwards they can walk backwards Kangaroos don't walk in the first place, so they wouldn't walk backwards. It's like the whole 6second memory thing with goldfish. If that was the case how would they survive, you have to learn to live. Plus my goldfish know who I am (they look for food when they see me) and are always happy when they are home (they get moved to other people's houses during holidays). Dogs can definitely look at the sky. Pigs I'm sure can. A baby hare is called a Leveret (sp?) Edited July 16, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf
July 16, 200816 yr Author Well then They better change the reasons for our emblems LOL .... okay So Libra needs to update their FACTS LOL Edited July 16, 200816 yr by Neat
July 16, 200816 yr okay So Libra needs to update their FACTS LOL I was going to ask.... but decided not to
July 16, 200816 yr I'd hate to think about the amount of bird feathers, bird dust and bird poop we consume due to our love for birds :X I'd rather eat bird poop and feathers than spiders thank you very much! *Phew* I'm so relieved that the spider "fact" is a myth!
