Posted July 9, 200816 yr Well I just came back from the vet with Blue. Costed less than I thought, and the prospects are good thus far. The vet looked very competent. She was very nice and caring with him, very competent. She gave him a full exam, weighted him (32g I thinks) verified the feathers and his feet. She found a couple wounds I had not noticed, one on his right foot's ankle and a small bash on the top of the head. She told me to keep trying to desinfect, but she suggests I stop using peroxide and go with something called Baxedin, which contains chlorhexidine gluconate. She says it's better for him and won't kill the good cells like peroxide. She told me he does not seem to have any broken blood feathers left (Seems that Charlie ripped 'em all clean off). His wings are swollen, his feet too. (EDIT: Oh, and she also told me TRY to wash his feet in warm water to clean off the junk, says it will help a lot.) The worst wound like I thought is the right foot, where there is necrosis. She told me his toe will dry and fall off... Poor thing, s'what I feared. If I see any bad color change in his foot, I have to call them ASAP. She gave me two medicines... An antibiotic for 7 days, 0.05ml two times per day (It's called enrofloxacin)... The other one is an anti-inflamatory (Meloxicam), for 5 days, once per day (every night) I'm gonna keep her as a vet for my birds for sure, I like her a lot and I liked her attitude. July 9, 200816 yr That's great news! I am so relieved he will be okay. The vet sounds like she really knew what she was doing
July 9, 200816 yr Good that you finally have a direction with the boy. Hopefully this can be the start of a great realationship between the two of you and least you know he is in good hands now.
July 9, 200816 yr What a great result, in that you have found a very good vet you are comfortable with. And to have a positive direction in dealing with Blue. With regard to the necrosis we have had some issues like that too. One a princess parrot that got tangled and toes were affected. Eventually the necrotic areas just dropped away and he is healthy and happy now, just missing ends of three toes. We also have a canary that was bitten when the rats got into the aviary. Poor thing also had a necrotic foot and yesterday its foot fell off and all healthy tissue left. It gets around fine with one working leg. You have to be admired making all these positive steps for Blue. Big pats on the back
July 9, 200816 yr Good news I have a tiel who lost a toe in a fight and had the bone sticking out like yours does, we fixed him up and he doesn't even notice it now. He'll be feeling better before you know it
July 9, 200816 yr Author Well thanks a lot guys, you were all very reassuring. I just hope I'll be able to tame him up now. It will take a long time (he has to heal first after all) but hopefully he'll get back to liking me. ...He grudges me a bit now, afterall, I have to grab him and shove stuff down his throat. Oh well.
July 9, 200816 yr glad you were able to get him to the vet Michelle and you found someone you could trust and liked, glad to here everything is going to be okay inspite of the toe he will recover wonderfully and you won't even know he is missing it after a while.
July 25, 200816 yr Author Blue returned to the vet today, and I just returned. if you guys remember that other thread... I was having worries about one of Blue's back toes last week. It looked half-cut off and still had colors... Well, in the meantime it changed colors a bit. It was yellowish now, with some dark in it. The necrosis is settling in all around the toe. The end of the toe was still colored because, well, she didn't chew the whole skin off like she did with the other one. Blue will lose that full toe, necrosis is working around the toe like shears. Nothing to do beyond resuming whatever I have left in antibiotics and anti-inflamatories for his safety and comfort. She told me that ideally we should amputate it, but she told me that it's 150 bucks and that with the medicine, cleaning and time, it will just fall off by itself so it's not worth it. Sure it's painful for him, it'll take a while but afterwards it'll be okay. It's not as if he's totally depressed or anything. His swelling should go away when all the necrosed toes are down. The front one is about half gone (He's PEELING it!) and is starting to drop at the root. Phew! Poor guy,I hope the toes will fall off soon so he can start enjoying life a bit!
July 25, 200816 yr We had a canary with the same situation with the necrosis. Her foot has just fallen off a few days ago. All the rest of the leg and all other tissue is healthy. She gets around fine on one leg
July 25, 200816 yr Author Oh poor thing. Glad she got used to it! Blue seems to start getting around well with a painful foot, but it's still tough for him. Does anyone knows how long it usually takes for necrosed stuff to fall off completely?

July 25, 200816 yr Are you able to give any pain medication? - I think MB posted a thread or Liv did re: natural pai meds for birds
July 25, 200816 yr Author Are you able to give any pain medication? - I think MB posted a thread or Liv did re: natural pai meds for birds :budgiedance: Well I'm giving him anti inflamatories. I'm not gonna start hunting down trees and plants...
July 25, 200816 yr I hope he recovers very soon. I believe I remember reading honey is natures pain killer and antiseptic.
July 25, 200816 yr Author Really? Well I did read here that it was an antiseptic in that first aide FAQ, but pain killer? Do I give it to him as a snack??? Cuz I have PLENTY honey, and I'm willing to share SOME of my gold with him. Some. I'm a honey addict. :budgiedance:
July 25, 200816 yr Author It was willow branches, probably easy to find if you have any creeks nearby We don't. The only willow I know in the area is on the lawn of a guy that is on my bus route, but I don't think he would like me stripping bark off his willows. And... putting honey there? Won't he just eat it?
July 25, 200816 yr You don't need to strip the bark off, just break off a few twigs as you're walking past nex time. Bue will chew on the bark on the twigs
July 25, 200816 yr Author You don't need to strip the bark off, just break off a few twigs as you're walking past nex time. Bue will chew on the bark on the twigs Considering the tree is in their back yard... I'm not sure they'd approve of my trespassing. I'll keep my eyes out for a more accessible one!
