Posted July 8, 200816 yr I have been bathing Jake's beak and putting antiseptic cream on it every day but i noticed this morning it is looking worse. i was wondering should he see a vet and be put on antibiotics or is there nothing a vet could do for it but i just have to wait for it to heal by itself. He is eating fine and poos are normal so it is not upsetting him.
July 8, 200816 yr I would say clean it with salty water and let the wound dry out and heal... I've tried antiseptic cream on a chicks open wounds on it's head from it's mother, in my opinion all it did was make it worse... He will probably need crop feeding until it's dried up enough that it's comfortable to use
July 8, 200816 yr Not one to rush to the vets unless I absolutely have to, Deb.....I would take him to the vet if I was you. Too deep a wound and too close to the brain for the infection to spread. He does not look well. In this case I would take him to the vet.
July 8, 200816 yr Author Thanks, hubby is in sydney with the car today so i will get him to the vet tomorrow.
July 8, 200816 yr Take him to the vet. I don't know much about wound care yet, but sometimes drying wounds out can actually worsen it. I guess because you kill the rehealing layer of skin. It looks a bit gooey, maybe infected.
July 8, 200816 yr Ohhhh Gross !!!! Â I agree with the warm salty water if you haven't got saline ...Until you get to the vet , Or call them and ask what should you do until you get there! See if you can Fax them a photo or SMS one over to them so they have a more visual idea of the injury .... Some antiseptic cream kept the wound soft and lets all nasties in too
July 8, 200816 yr Author I have got a appointment tomorrow with the vet and i have been cleaning it regularly because when he eats he gets seed husks stuck to the gooey part.
July 8, 200816 yr Deb, Good luck with the vet tomorrow hope it's nothing Bad ... Â Also with Hubby telling you no more birds and etc, I am sure that he loves you that much and sees you so distraught and sad with what has been going on and that is why he says what he does and is building you a new avairy
July 8, 200816 yr Author Deb, Good luck with the vet tomorrow hope it's nothing Bad ... Also with Hubby telling you no more birds and etc, I am sure that he loves you that much and sees you so distraught and sad with what has been going on and that is why he says what he does and is building you a new avairy i am hoping the vet will give me some antibiotics for Jake to help keep away infections. i know Hubby is just worried about the budgies and 4 kids[ one child needing alot of time] being too much for me to do and that is why he wants me to slow down on the budgie breeding. I would love him to hurry up and finish the aviary though.
July 8, 200816 yr Author But the budgie breeding is your hobbie and how you relax   I find the budgies very relaxing but my hubby is not an animal person so he sees them as work.

July 9, 200816 yr News Deb? I hope it went well and you have got some sort or treatment sorted out to help the poor guy. Good luck and (((((hugs)))))) Maesie xoxo
July 9, 200816 yr Author Jake did not get to the vets, long story why he did not and i do not feel like going into it. I rang the vet instead and he said that putting antiseptic cream on it was good for him and should help it heal. He is looking heaps better today and the wound has dried up.
July 9, 200816 yr Thats good if he is looking better Deb. I am sure the vet issue was out of your control.
July 12, 200816 yr OMG i am soo sorry for the poor little thing. i would be taking mine to the Vet but i have never experienced that and hopefully never will. do you know how they get that. Is it preventable. i really hope he/she gets better soon   *****EDITED FOR SHORTCUTS***** Edited July 13, 200816 yr by KAZ
July 12, 200816 yr Rod I believe he was attacked by another budgie. Â Can we have an 'after' photo Deb to see how he's going
July 12, 200816 yr A black beak is usually a sign of secondary stage infection ( septicaemia ) Â He is missing a large piece off the upper mandible very nasty! this may effect his ability to husk seed. Â Not that I want to sound like the Grim Reaper but I'd be surprised if he makes it long term. Â Poor guy! Must be in a lot of pain! Â Try that cream that I recommend, it has a pain relief agent as well as antiseptic.
August 19, 200816 yr Author Rod I believe he was attacked by another budgie. Can we have an 'after' photo Deb to see how he's going   Sorry i missed your Post MB, i was cleaning his wing tonight and decided to take a picture of his beak to show you how it was going. It is improving slowly but is growing crooked. i am hoping it will straigthen up when the whole beak grows back. It has been 6 weeks since he got attacked and he is still able to feed himself even with not much of a beak. Now with his wing problem i think it will be a long time still before he can go back in the avairy.
August 19, 200816 yr Poor boy! he's had a rough trot  His beak is looking good considering. Well done to keep him free from infection  I hope he makes a full recovery
August 19, 200816 yr Poor little bugger...thought about him the other day .. I agree with Liv. Well done!
