Posted June 30, 200816 yr My beautiful BG who i have had for about 5 years (94 ring) has been sick for the last 3 weeks. He had a upper respiratory infection in autumn, but it came back 3 weeks ago - only two days after i took this photo (he's the one in the middle) I have been back and forth with him to the vet and spent almost $200 on tests and appointments, All his tests have come back negative, no infections, parasites etc. The vet has diagnosed him with kidney failure and lung damage due to old age The vet told me to keep him warm and comfortable and let him go quietly. she didn't give me any meds for him, she said they would just prolong 'it' I am keeping him comfortable with a warm lamp and watching his every breath - i had such high hopes for him - I had planned to pair him with Lady ( the spangle on the right of picture) in spring I am so sad - my poor beautiful BG!!! June 30, 200816 yr He is so handsome, I am very sorry for what you are going through, I have been there and Pretty died in my hands, the 1 thing that helped me pull through it was the friends I had here right on BBC. BIG HUGS.
June 30, 200816 yr Author Thanks Guys, It is really hard. My vet offered to eutanase him, but i couldn't do it. Not today and on the spot like that I can hear him eating... the warm lamp makes him feel so much better, but his eyes still show that he is not good. I also forgot to add that he had a full course of antibiotics for the upper respiratory infection for 10 days, But he has continued to deteriorate from then on - just in case anyone thought i didn't treat his infection The vet said that he has probably been discreetly having these infections for years and because he has gone without treatment in the past his lungs have been damaged too badly to heal. he breaths very heavily (not wheezing though) and is wobbly in his feet. June 30, 200816 yr Oh LIV.... I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope he is comfortable and goes without to much pain. I really feel for you and can understand what you are going through. He knows how much you love and care for him and he knows you are doing what is best for him. Good luck with his final days and biggest hugs to you xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
June 30, 200816 yr I am so sorry to hear about poor BG At least you have little latte and cookie (I think they were his chicks ) to remember him by.
June 30, 200816 yr Sorry to hear that news Liv, I was also looking forward to seeing if he could produce some nice chicks, what a blow, but as they say while there’s life there’s hope, the warmth might help, not many recover, but some do by themselves. As others have often said, it’s often the ones we have big hopes for that we loose.
July 1, 200816 yr Sorry to hear this Liv. At least you know he had a good life with you and he is as comfortable as you can possibly make him at the moment.
July 1, 200816 yr Sorry to hear your news Liv . I know it doesnt make it any easier, but 14 years isnt a bad life span for a budgie his size is it? He must have been kept very healthy and happy during his life with you
July 1, 200816 yr Author OMG!! Thank you for all your warm wishes and support - I think BG can hear all your thought because I was expecting to bury him this morning, but insead i woke to hear him desperatly trying to escape the small hospital cage!! I have moved him to a slightly bigger indoor cage and this is him today He is still slightly fluffed, and his wings are a little droped, but his breathing has improved GREATLY and he is singing and preening and eating and lots the wabble he had yesterday!!! :D I am starting to think the "avian" vet knows as much about birds as I do. - I am really hoping she is WRONG!! I dont want him to die - BG is in my A list of favorites
July 1, 200816 yr There are lots of animals that like to defy what we expect of them and I'm glad BG is trying to be one of those. YAY!!! He's saying, "I wanna live!!! So there!" Vets try not to get people's hopes up and will tell you the most likely result so you are prepared for the worst. Sometimes it can be hard trying to pinpoint things, because so many diseases present so similarly, especially in birds! Who when they are sick either fluff up, don't eat, sleep more or poop funny. Getting a TPR (temperature, pulse and respiration) is hard too, cause they are soooooo tiny and their hearts go at like a million per second (not really ). And then trying to find a mucous membrane to see what perfusion and hydration status is. Bah! You know what I mean . So that is why you keep hoping for the best, because miracles happen and we (everyone) don't know everything, medicine is a science after all. Good vibes from loving people do a lot, I think. Lets hope BG just had a little sickness but he's over it now.
July 1, 200816 yr That is great news that he is looking better, i hope he continues improving for you.
July 1, 200816 yr That’s a good sign Liv, fingers crossed he makes it. Best wishes. Spring is on it’s way that may revive him.
July 2, 200816 yr I have had some come back from the brink of death when all hope was lost. I really hope this will happen with BG too :angel1:
