Roxy tried to fly today for the first time and i caught it on the camera which was so cute. In the eating area i am having problems trying to get her to eat, i ran out of egg and biscuit mix so i bought her young bird rearing food because i thought that would be better for her and she ate it for the last 2 days but today has decided she will not eat it. i made up the handraising formula that she used to eat because her crop is empty and i could only get her to eat a little bit of it. I tried a spoon and syringe and got more food on her then in her mouth.

Try some soaked seed with moist wholegrain bread all mixed together :D

if you don't have any soaked seed on hand, just try the wet bread. Egg and biscuit mix is mostly all bread crumbs anyway.

What about bread crumbs in the pantry???

i do not have breadcrumbs either, i have a dish with fresh vegies in her cage, a dish with soaked seed, a dish with young bird rearing food in it and i have seed scattered on the floor of the cage and normally she will pick food out of the different containers not the seed as much as the others but today she is not touching them at all. i pick up her and hold the containers for her but she will not eat.she still has food in her crop from the little bit of formula i gave her but i have noticed today she looks like she has lost weight but i know that can be normal when they start weaning but if i cannot get her to eat then she will lose more weight.

I am not sure what advice to give as i don't have any hand rearing experience. PM libby, she should be able to help.

How is Roxy. have you been able to get her to eat???

She is going better tonight, i heard this chirping noise from her cage when i was having tea and went to check her and she was eating her young rearing food and the food was cold. she has never eaten cold mix before so it was a good sign. She has gone to bed tonight with a very full crop. I got some great advice from Libby who said it is normal when they are weaning to go through a stage when they reject their food so Roxy is doing the normal things for her age which is good to know.

Oh Thank goodness!! I was getting worried about the lil girl.

Thanks for the update :hap:

She has woke up this morning and decided to be strong willed and not eat but Libby said that this stage she is going through will last a few days.

It is interesting that budgies do it too - no different to our kids refusing their meals i guess :hap:

I am so pleased Libby could help - she's a champ :D

Libby is the BUDGIE WHISPERER :D

Well they say you won't go to school with your bottle right lol so though she is tough she will grow up :D and too fast.

She is gorgeous. And I love the sleepy picture :hap: . I'm happy she is weaning well

Deb if you don't have breedcrumbs - Have you got a food processor or a grater???

When times are tough for me I blend up a bit of bread and when I can't find the blender ( cause Dave put it somewhere apart from where it belongs ) I use a grater :hap:

Would weat bix be good for an emergency food??

I have used wheatbix :hap:

Normally she likes her handraising formula but she is being stubborn and not wanting to eat it either. I have been able to get a lttle bit into her during the day by handfeeding her but at night is when she seems to like to eat and will feed herself until she is bulging. She was out tonight playing with Tweety and Runt, Tweety tries to stay away from her but Runt is fascinated in her.

Awww. She'll get there Deb. Those photos are great and I might have to steal some of your 'tree' ideas... esp the rope wrapped around the branch. :)

Tweety and Runt have their wings clipped so i put the rope on for them to able to climb up. Tweety loves climbing up and down the rope.
