Posted June 29, 200816 yr Well, after two successful breeding seasons in my aviary I decided to send my hen 'Mellow' for a holiday in my fiance's aviary. Within the first week of her being there she had found a nestbox and found a new man and was laying her eggs. She laid 7 eggs ( her biggest clutch so far ), when the 6th egg hatched, my fiance took the 7th egg and put it under another sitting hen. I asked him to do this because Mellow has never had to feed more than 3 babies before. This morning the 7th egg hatched...so she laid 7 fertile eggs and at this stage...we have 7 babies. Here she is and her new fella... And today's pics...emailed to me from my fiance (who lives several hours away from me at the moment). You'll have to excuse the blurry photo :-) I can count 5 babies, but he says there are 6 there! Plus the 7th baby under the other hen! Fun & games!!
June 29, 200816 yr Author Well...she was supposed to be having a holiday, but she had other things on her mind!! My fiance thinks he may have miscounted the bubs...so it's 6 out of 6...but still a great achievement. We're having some cold, windy weather in SA at the moment, so I just hope she's keeping them warm enough. Mind you, there are so many of them, they can keep each other warm!
July 9, 200816 yr Author Updated picture of clutch. Cleaned the box out today...was getting a little icky. So ignore rubbish on bottom of nest box. All bubs going really well. Appears as though some are blue...that would mean that the Mum would have to be split to blue? I think? I was told if a green and blue series bird have chicks, that green will be dominant over blue. Exciting to watch them grow!!
July 9, 200816 yr These are great pics thank you for sharing with us ,......these babies look so cute, wonderful to see them all
July 9, 200816 yr Author Gorgous babies in there A real good mix of colours Allsorts aren't they!! I am staying with my fiance on the weekend, so I am going to get them out and take a closeup of each baby to post!
July 9, 200816 yr what would the yellow budgie on the side be if it has blue cheek spots?? wonderful budgies By The Way lucy
July 9, 200816 yr Author what would the yellow budgie on the side be if it has blue cheek spots??wonderful budgies By The Way lucy Yes...I wondered the exact same thing. It looks similar to it's mother...but with blue cheek spots. I don't know what mutation that would be.
July 10, 200816 yr They are really lovely the yellow one is interesting - i am hopeless with genetics and i look forward to reading what the others say s/he is
July 10, 200816 yr It's probably a dilute of some sorts, seeing as mum looks like a dilute spangle clearflight pied thing. It looks like a dilute opaline spangle. Edited July 10, 200816 yr by Sailorwolf

How do you recognise a dilute?? And I like your summation of the mum's mutation, because I have never been able to work it out!! I do know that she is atleast half dom pied, as she had DF dom pied chicks with another cock which was split to dom pied. She also has slight cinnamon markings, but they are irregular and not all over her wings. She's a strange one alright, but certainly has some interesting chicks!!
July 10, 200816 yr Relooking at the picture....I agree with SW, the yellow chick looks to have black eyes and dads markins (Opaline spangle) and mums colour as i am also seeing green on the rump. Edited July 10, 200816 yr by **Liv**

Either they are dominant pied or they are not.............inos can hide dominant pied, but other types cannot.

The mum does have red or plum eyes (depending on the light)...so she may be hiding dom pied. For some reason I didn't think she could be a lutino...because she has the green suffusion. She really has me stumped. The previous cock, with whom she produced what I thought to be DF dom pied, was a normal green, but with a spot on the back of his head, which at the time I was told meant split to dom pied. So I have no idea how they got DF dom pied if the dad couldn't have been split to it. Their chicks looked like recessive pieds, but had white iris rings. This is the part of breeding budgies which I find so fascinating!! Edited July 10, 200816 yr by lucy

Small spot on the back of a chicks head indicates split to recessive pied. Larger patch is dom pied. DF dom pied chicks ONLY come from two dominant pied parents. What a mystery
July 10, 200816 yr Author When I take more photos of the chicks this weekend...I will do further close up investigation of the mum. I might post the photos of the mum and her story on the mutations thread as a challenge to those in the know!!!
July 10, 200816 yr Author Small colony breeding. Just two pairs in aviary. Whilst you can never be sure, I am confident that all her chicks with her previous cock were only with him, as all the chicks were very similar in colouring.
