Posted June 20, 200817 yr okay again mods if in the wrong spot feel free to move. So I got another bird the other night. She was a resuce bird that orginally I was told had been found kept in a shoe box under a bed for a few weeks, then brought to school where she was shaken in the box to stunn her and thrown in the air as other boys threw rock at her. She escaped and ended up in my hands. However I have since found out that she was purchased at a fete for $5 and the rest is still the same. I want to thank Kaz, melbournebudgie & Chrysocome for all their help and support last night while I worried over one sick budgie. She looked better today and I took her to the vets and this is the list of issues we are 99% sure that she has psitticosis *bangs head against desk* we where going to do the test but the vet told me if it came back postive or negative the treatment would be the same so I decided that $66 could go towards her new cage rather then the test. She is now on Psittavet Powder for the next 10 weeks/70 days and she got a Psittavet Injection. Her feet where a mess and had to be cleaned up so I have set her cage up with large flatish poles cause she can't balance that well on the smaller perches I had She has mites so was treated for them as well She has a very hard brest bone and then a spongey crop, the vet said she thought this might have been from eating the wrong seed or getting to much shell grit so I have to watch for signs of her throwing up and also hope that in the next few weeks the goes down. So at the moment I am teating all birds that where inside the house when she was with the Psittavet Powder (anyone know where I can get this cheaper then $40 for 100g?) I will also re treat them all for Mites when she is due again. They where all treated in the last week but will do it again today and then keep them on the same cycle as here even though they have not come in direct contact. I am thinking of treating the guys in quaratine and the ones in the aviary both with the powder and for mites, I don't think it could hurt any ideas or suggestions? So Psittavet every day for the next 70 days, Mite treatment every 10 days for the next 70 days not water base vegtables Qarratine for the next 70 days One quick question I am 99.9% sure that lemon is about to lay an egg is the Psittavet Powder going to effect her or her offspring? I forgot to ask the vet. So yeah here is a picture of Sky that I took yesterday sorry for the **** picture but she is VERY stressed but seems to be getting better.
June 20, 200817 yr That is just horrible. Makes me feel sick! Bless you for taking this little hen on. It sounds like you will have a very busy few months ahead of you. I hope she continues to get better and your other budgies don't get sick. I'm not sure about the medical side of it, so I'll leave it to the others. You are an angel and hopefully when she makes a full recovery she will be able to become a very special member of your birdy family. Hugs to you and this sweet little darling! Good luck and please keep us updated.
June 20, 200817 yr Good to hear you have definite direction to move in now for her ongoing good health Great job all round by you, by the way :angel1: The treatment for psittacosis cost us $50 so I think the $40 is money well spent. Look forward to hearing more about her recovery. Name yet ? Miracle would be good Cheers kaz :hap:
June 20, 200817 yr Yes did you get a name? My suggestion is Hope :hap: If we go to the bird sale and you see anything you want they can always stay at my house until you are sorted out :hap: Um derrrr...just realised you have called her Sky Edited June 20, 200817 yr by melbournebudgies
June 20, 200817 yr Poor little girl, I hope those boys got a huge telling off. How horrible to be kept in a box! Question: if she could fly how did the boys get her back? or how did other people get her? Sorry I just like to know all the details
June 20, 200817 yr if she has it do you think she should be raising a clutch, would that not to be too stressful if she is already sick?
June 20, 200817 yr Lemon doesn't have it, AV was just going to treat her incase given she has been in the house with the rescue bird. She got away because she was stunned when the boys shook the box, so she flew into the bushes and was rescued by someone with a heart
June 20, 200817 yr I think it would be okay. They don't recommend it for pregnant women but only because it can cause yellow discolouration of the teeth in the baby. Other than that I believe it is pretty safe. Her eggs may have a yellow tinge to them and other than that I can't see i causing problems
June 20, 200817 yr Author Rang the vet in the last 1/2 hour. Yes it will be fine cause Lemon already has eggs (not 100% sure but 99% sure) it would be worse for her to stop her from laying (not sure how I would do that she is an egg machine) then let her have the eggs. However as MB said there maybe a yellow colour to the eggs and I will have to watch the babies as they might have some issue so she wants me to bring them in and get checked. As for the boys the school says they do not want to get the police and/or the RSPCA involved they are going to disipline within the school and I don't think this would have happened if I had not made as much noise as I did and two of my cousins work for the school. Oh and the police already know, got a nice lady who is a Budgie owner and so annoyed/shock/mad it is not funny. Pictures where taken last night at the vets and they are coming to talk to me later today. Name is Sky cause she is Sky Blue and I didn't want them to put "no name" on her meds bottle. As for the non flying thing I was told that they where shaking the box and then throwing her out she was trying to fly but did not get much lift off and had no real direction so I think she was just really badly stunned. MB thanks for the offer I might take you up on it. At the moment I have the Quarantine group coming out and into the avairy on the 13th of July so If I do fine anything I really want then if you could hold them for 2 weeks that would be great if not then that's cool. Anyway off to buy metal bowls and some stuff for the guys outside catch you all later. Edited June 21, 200817 yr by KAZ typo quarantine
June 21, 200817 yr Author Kaz - one day I will get my fingers to type quarantine right! Sorry it's one of my bad words!
June 21, 200817 yr Hi AV. I read this topic last night but what those kids did made to so angry and disgusted that i couldn't find the appropriate words to post OMG!! those kids need to be punished properly, rather than just given a slap on the wrist from their school !! animal curtly is often the beginnings of serious criminals or even murderers! Well done AV for saving Sky. you are a true :angel1:
June 21, 200817 yr Author OMG!! those kids need to be punished properly, rather than just given a slap on the wrist from their school !! animal curtly is often the beginnings of serious criminals or even murderers! I am right there with you, this is just the first step to something much more! Like the guy in the states that kept setting cats on fire then set his mother on fire! As I said the RSPCA and the police are going to the school on Monday to talk to those involved. The RSPCA has asked me to hand Sky in but the vet told them last night that as she needs ongoing and daily treatment that I would be best to do that over the next 70 days so she is in my care for the time being if they push for me to hand her over after that (really i think they will have forgotten her) then I will hand her to MB who is a wildlife carer and then adopt her back! Also if they really give me a hard time I will invoice them $200 I have laid out on the little girl at the moment! It's really funny how quick they come back from something like this, I have her cage facing a window so she can see the birds outside and she is really jumping around and looking very alert and having lots of fun now that she can balance and I also think she likes the warmth and the light that is coming through the window.
June 21, 200817 yr Good thing you found her when you did gosh knows what her fate could have been, glad the RSPCA and police are getting involved if they did quicker there would not be so many animals suffering for such long periods of time.
June 21, 200817 yr Author I am happy how involved the RSPCA is in this case outside of wanting me to hand her in.
June 21, 200817 yr We've got that covered AV Besides they shouldn't require you to hand her in now as she wasn't a 'lost bird in the wild'
June 21, 200817 yr Good on you AV, I'm still disgusted at what those kids did, but just so glad that she came to you!
June 22, 200817 yr Kaz - one day I will get my fingers to type quarantine right! Sorry it's one of my bad words! dont worry too much...just about EVERYONE on here cannot spell QUARANTINE
June 22, 200817 yr Kaz - one day I will get my fingers to type quarantine right! Sorry it's one of my bad words! dont worry too much...just about EVERYONE on here cannot spell QUARANTINE Among other things :D How is Sky doing?? I am so pleased to hear the RSPCA are doing their part
June 22, 200817 yr Author I am amazed at the turn around in just a few days she has brighten so much. Still have a spongey crop and pooping alot but not as much as the other day. Also put her near a closed window so she can see the birds outside and she has been singing away to them and dancing around her cage, still has not gotten the message that she can't grip that well and keeps falling off her perches! But she is MUCH better then she was on Thursday when I got her.
