June 26, 200817 yr Author He seems to be up to his old tricks. It looks quite watery still, but (I may be imagining it) it is a little better. I'm starting to think it may be behavioural, because he was fine at the vets now he is weeing again. Edited June 26, 200817 yr by Sailorwolf
July 3, 200816 yr Author Poor little fella. He's worse now. As soon as he finished the doxycycline he produced even more urine. I changed his cage paper yesterday morning and now 1 quarter of it is completely saturated. I rang the vets on Tuesday and they didn't get back to me, so today I rang them again and they rang back. He now has to go back in tomorrow. He is still relatively happy and sings every now and then. But he is sleeping a lot. I gave him a whole millet yesterday and he was very happy about that. I hope they will find out what it is soon, because I've already got a $200 bill and that is after my discounts and free consults . And my spare vet money is running out.
July 3, 200816 yr Aw, poor thing! I hope you (and the vet) work out what is wrong with him and hope he gets better soon!
July 3, 200816 yr Author Thanks guys. I had a little cry about it yesterday. I miss his old silly playful self.
July 4, 200816 yr Author Took him in today. Unfortunately he has to stay over the weekend before they are going to do any xrays. So it is going to cost me another $100.
July 8, 200816 yr Author Well I haven't heard from them. My flatmate is also a vet student in a higher year than me and managed to bump into the vet crop tubing Arkady last night while she was treating her cat. Apparently they have been trying to get hold of me. And apparently they are going to use Arkady as a teaching case. Which will be pretty cool. My little boy will be famous, well not really as they will have to change his name and my name etcetc. Apparently the vet also thinks he has arthritis too So I'm waiting on their call. Remember how he used to be 70g the fat tennisball. Well now he is a much healthier weight of 44g.
July 8, 200816 yr I hope they can find out what is going on though that is a healthy weight that is a lot of weight for a budgie to loose so quick
July 8, 200816 yr Sorry to hear that Arkady is still not well, i hope the vets can work out what is going on so he can come back home to you.
July 9, 200816 yr Author okay, well just as I was viewing my topic, the vet rang back. They took some radiographs and they couldn't see any renal tumours at all. But he has some arthritis or osteopathy going on in his right leg, poor wee fellow. So he is getting treated for that. They are thinking of putting him on pain meds as well to see whether that picks him up. He is also being a picky eater too the little brat. They are definitely using him as a teaching case which means that I don't have to pay for any more than the bill they already sent me. I am feeling so lucky and loved and shaking with happiness right now, because that means they can go all out on him and I don't have to worry about money issues. This was such a lucky chance. Arkady you better get better so I can take you home and smooch you.
July 9, 200816 yr That's good news that your vet bill will not increase. I hope they learn lots while diagnosing Arkady and she comes home safe and well to you soon
July 9, 200816 yr Biggest (((((hugs)))))). Poor guy. I hope he gets better soon and they figure out what's going on with him. I was going to virtually send you a money tree to help pay for the bills, but Yah for the vets!!! Good luck!!!
July 9, 200816 yr At least there is not tumor there - poor little bugger with the arthritis or osteopathy .... That is great new about the vet costs -
July 17, 200816 yr Author They still don't know what is wrong with him and he is still the same. His only symptom is the PU/PD and the wing tremors. He is going to go in for a kidney biopsy tomorrow morning. I hope they find something, because they are stumped. The head of the avian and wildlife department (who is an aussie lol) suggested maybe a septic arthritis and to take a kidney biopsy. If it is not one of those then he may have a pituitary tumour, which can be hard to diagnose with out post mortem in budgies (not enough research has been done in that area). And if he has one, it would be very hard to treat as well. So it is either kidney problem or in his head (behavioural or literally in his head). Poor little fella, apparently he is quite happy there at the moment and the vet loves him.
July 17, 200816 yr This sounds like an episode of House md  I hope they find out whats wrong so you can relax and have him back.
July 22, 200816 yr Author okay so he went in for his op on friday. Unfortunately during the procedure he had a little bleed out making it hard to see with the endoscope (little camera on the end of a tube that they can insert into the body cavity of an animal and look around). They decided he had been under anaesthesia too long, so they brought him out of it. This means that next week they are going to go in from the other side and hope that he doesn't bleed again. So the poor little fella has an air sac full of blood at the moment. Learnt about some pituitary problems today which share some of his symptoms. But his are so vague he could have anything. Â Interesting fact I learnt today. Approximately 1 quarter of the human population has a pituitary tumour. These are often asymptomatic and noone notices, but sometimes they can press on the optic chiasma (where the optic nerve comes into the brain) and cause tunnel vision. These are apparently easy to treat as well. They also interfere with menstral cycles and something else as well. I forgot. So yeah, if you have problems in both those areas then you never know.
