Posted June 19, 200817 yr Well poor Arkady has been presenting with polyuria/polydipsia which means drinking and weeing a lot (yes birds actually wee, I didn't know that either), so I'm taking him into the vet tomorrow and he'll get to stay for the day. I was thinking I'll just take the whole cage in which means Bacardi and Izzy as well, because if he is there the whole day he would probably like the room to move around. So here's hoping all's good and it is something simple. He has been a little off for awhile, but it has been exam period so unfortunately he has had to wait, I feel kinda bad about this, but he is still singing and sleeping on one foot, so I am not too worried. I think it might be kidney problems, but his only signs are the ones above so it could be a manner of things. Diabetic budgie??? Anyway I hope all goes well tomorrow. Wish me and him luck.
June 19, 200817 yr Good luck at the vets tomorrow. I hope he is okay and it's nothing major. Keep us posted.
June 19, 200817 yr Oh no... Good luck Arkady and Mum!!! I hope it's something simply that can be treated and he is back to his normal self in no time. Big (((((((((hugs))))))))) of luck to you both
June 19, 200817 yr Oh no, sorry to hear that. PU/PD (around here we pronounce it poop'd. Yes, we are mature) can be kidney, liver, diabetes or even psychogenic among other things. But I hope it's something simple. Good luck!
June 19, 200817 yr I hope all goes well. The urine is the white and the feces is the black/brown which I believe for others who didn't know that birds do both when they go to the bathroom.
June 19, 200817 yr Author Haha Poopd!!!! Awesome. Actually They have faeces, urates and urine. Faeces is the brown or black part. Urates is the white solid stuff and urine is the liquid around it. It is usually not much because they are so good at conserving it. But Arks makes it look like he's spilled all his water on the ground.
June 20, 200817 yr Author Well I took him in today and they are going to keep him over the weekend to monitor his water intake and output. He got a lovely big hospital cage all to himself (bigger than his homecage!!!) He is going to get some blood done and they are even going to test him for Chlamydia. The vet even picked up on things I didn't pick up on, like how he was favouring one leg - could be a kidney problem. But she asked if he ever had green urates and I remembered that he had, but then I didn't worry about it because his urates went white again. Apparently this is a sign of Chlamydia or liver problems. I don't know how easy it is to clear up Chlamydia, so I hope it's not that, because I don't want to get it. Or if it is that, I hope it clears up easily. She is also going to do a faecal float to see if they have any parasites, so that will be interesting. The other two, Izzy and Bacardi, enjoyed the trip to the vet and back immensely, they just sang the whole way and sang along to David Bowie in the waiting room. It was very cute.
June 20, 200817 yr Chlamydia = Chlamydophila = Psittacosis. I'm curious, did she warn you about it being zoonotic? Unless it's some other bird chlamydia, I don't know too much about them. The green poo thing is true though. It should clear up with a course of doxycycline I believe. Urates going green - that's to do with bilirubin and biliverdin, kind of equivalent to jaundice in other animals. The PU/PD and leg favouring makes me think kidney too. I hope everything goes well, please keep us updated. If you can, tell us about the tests and results, I like to hear and learn about them :budgiedance:
June 20, 200817 yr Author Sure thing Chryso. No she didn't say it was zoonotic, but I just did a quick google on it, I wasn't even sure whether it was bacteria or protozoa
June 20, 200817 yr Thanks for the update and keep them comming. I hope his weekend goes well and he'll be okay. Big hugs of support heading your way ((((((((xoxo)))))))))
June 20, 200817 yr Author Well I got a call from the vet. She says he has been very quiet since being there. The parasites faecal egg float came back negative, so we have no parasites to worry about. They haven't been able to do bloods as he was a bit puffy, so she thought she would let him rest for a bit. Apparently his urine had glucose in it, although it is a little hard for any certainty to be taken from that as it could have leached in from the faeces. So when they are able to do bloods they will and depending on what they find I gave them the go ahead to do xrays. All tests (I can't remember what else they did) have come back negative so that is good, but then annoying as we don't have a definitive answer yet. So here's hoping it'll be a good result. June 20, 200817 yr Fingers crossed for you! I hate not knowing... it's so hard. Good luck and I hope he is feeling better soon.
June 24, 200817 yr Author I just got another call. His tests came back negative for Chlamydia (can get false negatives though apparently) He's been looking much better since Friday and his poops seem to be much better. All his blood work came back good, no apparent kidney problems, but his smears did not come out well enough to look at so they are going to redo them tomorrow. She thinks it might be behavioural. He's been on doxycycline which may be why he is doing so much better, but there is nothing definitive at this stage. If his blood smears show that he has an infection then they will look into it further. When he is sent home he needs to be in his own cage and such so that I can continue to give him the doxycycline. She suggested it might be because he has been recently separated from his mate, although I don't think they were that close to begin with. I feel a bit like a bad mummy now, but I can't have all 11 in my bedroom again, it was quite hectic. So I'll see what happens tomorrow. It is likely, Mr fuzzbutt will be coming home . She says he is absolutely lovely and loves his millet. (I think she likes him).
June 25, 200817 yr Author Well he's home today. He was looking pretty happy at the vets. I brought him home and as soon as he sees the other two, he tries to chew his way out of the little carry cage. lol He has to go in a separate cage as I have to give him doxycycline in his water. This means he isn't allowed any vegetables or any mash or anything with liquid in it, so that he definitely drinks his medicine. His poops seem to have less liquid in them so that is good. I got a few shots of him. He looks a little crabby, but that is because he saw the orange light on my camera and knew that a flash was coming so he kept closing his eyes. He just hopped down to have a snack of seeds now and is having a preen. Â Â Â
June 25, 200817 yr Glad to hear that he is home and you have a plan of action to help him get better. Did you ever get a definitive diagnosis? Liver issues, or anything like that?
June 25, 200817 yr Author No. We didn't get a definitive diagnosis. He was starting to look better just on the doxycycline alone, so if there is no need for further tests then there was no point in putting him through it.
June 25, 200817 yr I'm So pleased he is home I find it so hard when they are sick, but even worse when they are sick AND away from home. I hope he makes a speedy recovery
