Posted June 18, 200817 yr As you all know, I'm moving into my unit next week. Well, I'm organising utilities etc... and am not happy. I went to organise Telstra... well, there is no phone line!!! Are you kidding me. I have been in contact with the Real Estate Agent, and she said the Landlord is overseas untill mid August. She can't do anything about it... BULL S***. I am so not happy at all!!!!! Grrrrr. No phone line means no internet which means no BBC. I am so angry and so upset right now I could cry and break things at the same time. And to make matters worse, she doesn't know if I can have the inside birds any more... she has to talk to the landlord and yeah... he is overseas. So I might have an unused cage for sale!!! Grrrrrrr. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Sorry guys... really needed to unload. I knew everything couldn't go this well. It never does!!!
June 18, 200817 yr What bummers!!!!! The agent has to be able to contact the landlord - they would in a flash if you didn't pay your rent or trashed the place (which i know you wouldn't do by the way) SOOOOOOooooo frustrating (((((hugs)))))))
June 18, 200817 yr Surely the Landlord must have an emergency contact or even an email address they can check from time to time.
June 18, 200817 yr Author She said she'll email him and hope he answers back. It's sooooooo NOT cool. Surley they HAVE to give you a working phone line!!! In this day and age... GRRRRRRRRRR. She was little help. I just have to be careful as I don't want to get on the wrong side of them when I haven't even moved in yet.
June 18, 200817 yr They do not have to give you a phone line and there is every chance that you may have to pay for it to go it.

June 18, 200817 yr that is really awful, i hope the landlord does get back to her so the problem can get sorted out. You might have to visit your parents lots so you can get a BBC fix. my husband says that you can get wireless internet connections now. here is some links to info. Bigpond http://my.bigpond.com/internetplans/broadb...iew/default.jsp Optus http://personal.optus.com.au/web/ocaportal...p;site=personal Virgin Broadband also has a service but when i just went there the page was broken or something G'day Maesie, Mick here- Debs hubby. The wireless these companies use comes with a doo-hickie you plug into your USB port (dongle, actually) and it connects to the wireless networks provided by the broadband companies. they are pretty good and reliable and you could travel out into the country with your laptop and still be working the Budgie forum Edited June 18, 200817 yr by deb
June 18, 200817 yr I thought legally they had to supply you with a phone line for safety reasons. It is your responsibility to connect it but theirs to put it in...

I have gone for a drive, have chocolate and milk and have calmed down... I'm thinking maybe I don't need a land line. I don't make a lot of calls. Maybe I could just use my mobile and have wireless internet (thanks Mick) Thanks Deb and Mick. I'm looking into those options now and found the virgin info too. I was concerned they weren't reliable. I'd hate for my internet to crash. Also is their issue with security? or not. Thanks.
June 18, 200817 yr Hey Maesie we have Virgin broadband, no landline! It costs us $60 a month and we get everything included. The only thing we pay extra for is non-virgin mobile phone calls and I hardly make any mobile phone calls anyway. Haven't had any major problem with reliability and the security seems fine. June 18, 200817 yr Maesie, my son has never had a land line. He has always used his mobile and wireless internet. Go for it. There are solutions.
June 18, 200817 yr Hey Maesie they use the same network mobile phones do, so reliability should not be an issue... If you get a strong mobile phone signal you should be right. As for security, it is the same as any broadband connection. make sure you have an up to date antivirus (i can advise a good free one!) Firewall (windows XP with service pack 2 has a decent one) and perhaps if you are dilligent anti spyware program (i know a good free one for that too ) as for the providers, as long as you have a strong signal then all of them should be pretty similar- so sort out which contract and price you like. My boss at work has totally got rid of his land line and just uses mobile phones and Wireless internet and tells me the price works out pretty similar if not a little cheaper. Mick
June 18, 200817 yr Author Thanks everyone!!!! and Thanks so much Mick... will look at it. I sent Deb and you a PM, but you've answered my question here anyway!
June 18, 200817 yr Hard to imagine in this day and age that there are homes still without phone lines. In thinking this way, it would not be something you conciously check up on I guess when looking for a home. You would just expect it to be there.

Our house is 3 years old, we bought it 1 year ago and there was no land line connected - not even a phone point inside VERY ODD I think! We had to pay someone to come and wire up the house. Phone is like power and water these days so why our house didn't have it i would not know Edited June 18, 200817 yr by **Liv**
June 18, 200817 yr l'm glad that you have found some solutions for your problem Maesie. it really is hard to believe to have a place that has no phoneline
June 18, 200817 yr Maes, check your lease agreement !!!!! If you asked for the Birds and told them about it , it should be written on the lease agreement!!! This is a legal binding contaract!, Also check where the landlord or real estate did the inspection to see if it states on there phone line, If then you will have to wait till the Landloard gets back, apart from that for a phone, use a prepaid mobile phone you can get a prepaid cap which is roughly $40 credit ( but you get bonus credits for up to $150.. I've just upgraded to wirelsee broadband with telstra, it is so far so good no problems there, security ways we all should have a anti virus program on our p.c I wish you luck mate !!!! - If worse comes to worse tell them that you are paying for a phone line to be installed has you have health issues and need it for emergancies
June 18, 200817 yr land lords are meant to pay for EVERYTHING!!! including replaced light globes and tap washers! When we were renting we would just keep all the receipt then present them to the landlord every month or so, to be reimbursed $$$.
June 18, 200817 yr You should definately get a landline. Just in case your mobile runs out of battery and it's an emergency. Cheaper too I think.
June 19, 200817 yr Author Well... I'm so tired!!! I was on the phone to my sister untill 11pm last night. She's great. Her husband (bless him) was on the internet at the same time. We did our research. It is not law for them to supply me with a phone line. The contract I signed never said I would have one, nor did it state I wouldn't. I'm putting it down to a) my real estate agent either didn't know there wasn't one or forgot to tell me (she's new, and I've never rented before and didn't ask the right questions... after long discussion on here, with my family, the agents and consumer afairs, I have decided I will get the connection done and pay for it myself. I would feel more comfortable having a landline, and it means I can spend hours on the phone to my family if needed . I have contacted telstra, and as far as I know, putting in a new line shouldn't be to hard. If other units in the block have phones, it should be easy, if not they may have to dig a little... but the landlord should realise he is getting this for free so it should be okay. I'm about to email my agent and let her know the details... hopefully I can get the go ahead from her and just do it. I could have taken this further and kicked up a real fuss, but I can't be bothered. I like the unit, its location and dont want to get off on the wrong foot. If all goes well and I stay there for awhile, It will pay for itself... and when it comes down to it... its only money. So, thanks everyone for your advice, guidence and simply williness to listen to me winge!!! You guys rock!
June 19, 200817 yr I sit on my phone for hours Maesie and on the net at the same time. I am with virgin wireless. My fiance lives in NSW so my world pretty much revolves around the phone. It's been great
