Budgie Poo....again!

Featured Replies

Can you give me some advice please? My budgie has a poo problem. For the past few days our little boy has had yukky green poo. He is not dirty at his vent, and he is not sounding or looking ill. He is still chirping and squarking like mad! Just before his poo went green, it was very wet...dont know if that helps!

He doesnt eat veggies he just dont like them! He has good seed, always fresh water and is regularly let out to fly and has fresh air via his outside hook!

Is it a trip to the vets or a cheaper trip to the pet shop?

Hi Fergie, he may have gotten cold with the change in weather , if he hasnt changed , then keep a close eye on him and make sure that he is warm , bring him inside at night and not in the laundry , the warmth will help . if he gets worse and stops his activness see the vet.

Hello and welcome ^_^

I am in SA too :D

I agree with lonebudgie. It has been pretty nippy here this week. I have inside birds and outside birds. the outside birds are used to the cold and are fine outside all the time. On the other hand, the inside birds stay inside all the time as this stops them getting sick/stressed from the sudden temperature changes when moving from inside and out and vice versa.

Oh and, When his poops were runny, were they bright green?? Did he have any time without food?? Runny green poo that gradually turns back to normal again over a few days, suggests he might have not been eating or run out of food for a short period, but is eating again.

PS... he really should have veggies :D

I keep telling him that, but he looks at them and refuses to try! Even put broccoli 'trees' in his cage but nope! Carrotts whither and are left!

By The Way, just noticed today that the do seem better, still not right though!

Have you tried a hospital cage to get them back to good health( how to is in FAQ) ....

I started with corn first sprinkled with a little millet

get a tin of corn, open it up and put into a glass bowl, put a teaspoon of corn sprinkled with seed in a little dish

for the to invesgate and try ( seal the remaining corn put infridge) and retry the next day and so on and so on the corn will stay fresh in the fridge for ( i think5 days ( i throw i out after that ) so a 69c can will last better then buying fresh expensive veggies that will waste the first week with introducing veggies ..... Once they got the hang of corn, Peas are another good one ( bag of frozen peas last ( thaw in hot water and serve) then grated carrott, tin pineapple fresh celery and spinsh are great and brocoli too Best by far is Bok Choy ..... (Remember to serve at room temp)

You could try pretending to eat veggies in front of him and then offer it to him. Budgies that don't eat veggies will usually try grass and dandelion and green leafy vegetables like spinach.

Just to let you know, he is better-ish! His problem comes and goes! We ensure he is not in a draft, with plenty of seed. I grate carrot into his seed so hopefully he eats it!

Thanks for the tips!

(Must remember when I weed the garden to save a dandelion leaf or two.....I have plenty!)

That good that he is better(ish)

What seed/brand do you feed him?? has his diet, seed type or brand changed in the last few weeks?

You said that his vent is not dirty - a dirty vent is normally the first sign of a sick bird so his poop issue could be diet related.

if it comes and goes and he doesn't eat a variety of greens then you need to have your bird seen by an avian vet, green poos (bright ones) can be a sign of liver dysfunction, I am NOT saying this is the issue I am only saying it is a sign that is why a good check-up from an avian vet is bet. They can do a poo culture and make sure there is nothing wrong. One thing about birds if you wait 3 days to see if it they get better they could be dead. Pretty was flying around find in the morning and by afternoon he had runny poos and in the evening he passed away inspite of the vet visit. I am not here to scare you but let you know the facts so you can make a wise decision for the health of your bird.

take pictures of it people are really helpful on this forum with pictures.

i have an older bird who does not eat veggies unless it is silverbeet... LOVES silverbeet think of a dog protecting his kill that is Harley with silverbeet, once he got that I found that corn on the cob he love and snowpea I just kept adding thing. Find the one that they love and once they get the hang of it they are veggie monsters! :)
