Posted May 30, 200817 yr You know, it struck me... I often see you guys talk about worming budgies, but I never wormed mine. Is it a must?
May 30, 200817 yr I never did it either and I live in the U.S., and I have never head of doing it hear either.
May 30, 200817 yr Author Really? You know, I never heard of bird parasites around here either... Must be the winter killing 'em. I wonder, if they had worms what would be the signs?
May 30, 200817 yr the poops would be watery, itchy butt, weight loss, I know Kaz told me it is common over there.
May 30, 200817 yr There would be worms there, but a pet bird kept by it’s self would have very limited contact especially if the cage was regularly cleaned. Worms especially Round Worms are everywhere, there’s no escaping them. I don’t worm my birds regularly & don’t seem to have any trouble that I can pin down to worms. I have read in poultry information put out by the experts that it is actually worse to keep worming poultry, they have found that a few mature Round Worms in the gut is pretty normal & does less damage than juvenile ones, which is what happens if they are wormed, there’s straight away a invasion of new worms hatching from eggs & this does more damage.
May 31, 200817 yr Worms come (strangely enough lol) from soil. Most birds who don't have contact with soil will never get worms. People who have a paved, or soil aviary floors need to worm every 3 months to prevent worms. I have a paved aviary bottom so i use wormer every 12 weeks (or so) - the wormer i use is expensive but it also kills mites and any other bugs that feed on the birds body fluid

June 1, 200817 yr There's all kinds of wormers and they can be bought from bird supply stores or petshops. One of the better one I think is Elliotts brand, but they all do pretty much the same job. Just follow the directions on the bottle.
June 1, 200817 yr What wormer do you use and where do you get it from Liv? It's called 'Moxidectin" - for caged birds and pigeons - I think it is great stuff as it's a clear, fully water soluble, palatable syrup. Added to the drinking water for 24 hours, it clears round worm and hair worm infection. It is also effective against all external parasites that feed off body fuids, including mites, pigeon flies and airsac mites. It has a wide safety margin and is safe to use during stress and breeding. it does not affect feather quality and is safe to use during moulting. It does not cause nausea. 5ml per 1L of water. cost me $44 for 125ml from my local bird dealer
