My friend ended up taking her budgie to the vet today because his eye got worse again. The vet told her he an infection in his eye caused by mites and gave her some medicine to put on his eye and put some ointment on his back to get rid of the mites. She is wondering what sort of mites would they be because his eye is the only thing affected. He did not tell her how he got the mites and what else she has to do like does she have to clean his cage with anything. He is a inside budgie and the only one she has.

I've had a bird with scaly face mites who was affected on the skin (eyelids) around his eye. Perhaps that's what is was? Was there a build up of matter around it?

I would clean everything and change the perches, spray with coopex or A.I.L vetafarm .

Red mite , Feather mite , Scaly mite and fodder mite are the enemy

he did not have any build up but he had been rubbing his eye and had rubbed the feathers off around his eye and his eye was closed shut.

What is coopex and where could she find it.

All farm supplies have it , Its a powder that you mix up with water and spray it . I do my avaries once a month in the warmer months ,every two in the cold months , it kills everything , from mites , to flies , spiders, it leaves a residue on the surface of what you spray and this will keep killing any bugs that touch it . Just remove the water and food , spray directly onto birds, sometimes i make a bucket up in the summer and dunk my birds in it.

I thought coopex was extremely toxic chemicals  ???

I was told to use it no where near any living animal as it's harmful?

she only has a small cage so could she just disinfectant the cage and then spray it with a mite spray.

Will do the same job.

You can also mix coopex in the seed and kill any bugs in the seed , especially if you are storing it for a while.

Have been useing coopex for 10 years , never had a problem

Most vets are pretty hopeless when it comes to bird diseases,

you really need an avian vet.The wild doves carry mites as well they could've infected your bird,i use ivermectin(s76) in the water a few times a year and spray with coopex twice a year.Seems funny that these so called mites have only affected his eye.I had a bird with a funny eye for 4 yrs and my vet reckoned it was an sinus infection, but eventhough it was treated it never got any better he died a few weeks ago.Is there any brown discolouration on his head above his cere? is his breathing okay?

Yes, could be scaley face, sometimes they like to only attack certain areas of the body. You can get mite powder made for birds and small animals. Just sprinkle that around the cage and in the budgie's feathers. You have to make sure it is made for birds as they preen themselves anything made for dogs is not meant to be ingested as dogs don't really lick themselves.
