Posted May 28, 200817 yr I have a 4 week old baby that has not fledged yet i was watching him this afternoon feed from his dad while hanging half out of the nestbox when he came crashing to the ground with a thump and did not try and flap hs wings at all and now he seems to have minimal movement in his feet he doesnt seem like he is in any pain though? im hoping he was just stunned by the fall has anyone had this happen before? and what were the outcomes?
May 28, 200817 yr Author not me mate, hows it doing now??? May 28, 200817 yr Did you check the chick for issues with its legs prior to the fall ? It may have been slow to leave the nest due to leg issues it had already

May 28, 200817 yr Author What kind of height from nestbox to floor, and was there anything soft to land on ? Almost 2 meters and straight onto concrete floor......not good!
May 28, 200817 yr One of my babies had a fall out of his nest box, it was a 1& 1/2 metre drop onto dirt floor. He had injured his leg and seem paralysed on one side of his body, it took a couple of months to get full movement back but he is 18 months old now and apart from a waddle when he walks he is doing fine.
May 28, 200817 yr What kind of height from nestbox to floor, and was there anything soft to land on ? Almost 2 meters and straight onto concrete floor......not good! Nestbox high and aviary breeding ? I have had one die from a fall from a nestbox of only 10 inches height. Sometimes they just fall badly and cannot get into a position to glide some. Let us know how the chick gets on
May 28, 200817 yr A few budgies of mine have had very nasty falls like that and some have had horrific injuries inflicted upon them by vicious parents or other birds in the aviary. Apply first aid (make them safe, keep warm, soft food, warm water with a bit of glucodin or bird first aid mix in it to drink and cuddles). If they survive the first 48 hours they will likely recover with time and TLC. If there are any open wounds, daily cleansing with saline, then pat dry to prevent infection.
May 29, 200817 yr Author okay update time he survived overnight but when i went out this morning he was on the aviary floor so i have pulled him inside when i pick him up he uses his claws but when i put him down he doesnt walk or anything he is sitting on my computer desk at the moment wrapped in a scarf he does not want to move or anything? so he is not paralised he moves his feet but he doesnt put any weight on them (walking) does anyone know what i should do? i am going to hand raise him now he is 4 weeks old? If he cant fly do just keep him comfy on a scarf in the cage? should i do some sort of rehabilitation with him? he is too beautiful to let go
May 29, 200817 yr So pleased he made the night. Have you checked for broken bones?? he could have cracked something in the fall. If he is able to squeeze your finger with his toes, that is a good sign (neurologically), but doesn't rule out breaks Hopefully he is just bruised and sore, and after a week or so of TLC, will be back to normal

And also i had a baby die from crop rot and i suspect malnutrition so what else can i feed him besides the formula?
May 29, 200817 yr I cant help with hand rearing - I have no experience with it... Libby and a few other members (cant remember who ) are very good with it and will be able to help you there Broken/cracked bones can be felt, by gently feeling along the legs a toes etc. if the bird flinches (in pain) or if you can feel a spot that doesn't feel right, then it's possibly broken. a broken bone would also be swollen and/or bruised by now too - check the breast area too seeing as it took most of the impact. baby budgies bones are still quite flexable - so fingers crossed, he is just bruised :hap: He will be fine in a scarf until he starts to feel better and explore Edited May 29, 200817 yr by **Liv**

May 29, 200817 yr Missylu, if he isn't moving very well take him down to the vet to have a look over they'll check for broken bones and etc, if the consuly fee usually $40-$45 is a bit much tell them you found it they usually wave the fee ....
May 29, 200817 yr Author Great news guys the litle one was in a box with the lid open and he wasnt moving much and then all of a sudden he jumped out of the top so its a start he seems to be using his feet better now aswell so all the finger crossing has seemed to work
