June 8, 200816 yr What are his poops like? Get the vet to take a swab around his eye and see if they can culture it (This will tell if there is bacteria there). Get them to take a skin scraping from around the eye and look at it under the microscope (this can tell if he has mites or lice). Get them to do blood smears (This can give an indication of white blood cell counts and a general idea of the immune status, whether it is likely to be parasites, or a bacterial or viral infection of some kind and how the immune response is progressing). Get them to look at the poop under the microscope (see if their are any parasite eggs) and see if they can culture it (see if there are any abnormal bacteria). Most of these tests can be easily done in the vet clinic for a small cost, I'm amazed they haven't tried any yet. Listen to his breathing, is it wet?, raspy, clear or soundless? If problems here then it could mean respiratory infection. What colour is the skin around his eye? If he is not responding to antibiotics then there are two possibilities: 1. It is not a bacterial infection 2. The bacteria is resistant to many drugs, which unfortunately is a possibility if he was staying at a vet clinic

The vet first warmed him because they said he was with other parrots when he was boarding. They did not take scrap from his skin which i am going to tell them . The pop they have looked under microscope they have found nothing. The first vet he went was the vet of the boarding house she gave him psittavet for 10 days. Then i got him he looked terrible his eyes were both with infection and his droops were waterly green.I have just arrived back to Australia and took him immediately to my vet .She had a consultation talk with the first vet who saw him and they decided to continue the medication because there was a little bit of improvement around his eyes. Then because i didn't see much improvement in his breathing i took him again to my vet and she did a chlamydophila immunocomb test which later was found negative (level was Zero) then she gave him baytril for 7 days because of his breathing. After 7 days i returned again to the vet because was only small improvement in one eye and he was still moving his tail when breathing. The vet took faecal smear 2 test she didn't see anything wrong and gave him new antibiotics clavulox for 7 days then she adviced that if this antibiotics went help they need to take biopsy. He is a little bit better but not much, he does not talk at all also behave differently then before he sometimes creeps when he sees me or hear other loried outside my unit.I had to clean his cage yesterday and i put him in the living room he was sitting freezed scarry and i was in the bathroom cleaning his cage he heard lories outside the balcony he ran to the window and crached into the window and was bleeding from his nostrils and felt like he wants to sleep. I had him for 1 1/2 year and he had never crached into a window, he always know there is a window. I do not understand how he behaves so differently now.Sorry his color around the eyes is grey like. I live in a building that there is Concierge 24 hours they said they can feed the bird everyday and i can come every weekend to Sydney and check everything is okay.I really don't know is it better to move the budgie to another place when he is sick or live him at the unit for 5 days with only 1 visit per day of a concierge.
June 9, 200816 yr sorry, i can't see your picture ... Oh yes i can What a tricky choice you have to make. Personally, I would take him with me. If he wasn't sick it would probably be okay to leave him with a carer, but because he needs so much attention, a carer might miss the signs of further sickness and not take him to the vet. June 9, 200816 yr He really sounds like he is a completely different bird. Are you sure he is the same bird? Have you told the vets how he has been behaving so deifferently?
June 9, 200816 yr His behaviour changes might just be from being sick and in a strange place for a long time. He might have lost his trust in people being in a place where he wasn't given constant attention/care, and be depressed (not wanting to sing and wanting to sleep lots) because he feels ill. His calling/desire to be with other birds is probably because he got used to being around other birds while at boarding. I too would take him with me, birds can go downhill fast, at least you will be able to watch him constantly and you know what to look for. And I'm with MB, we have some excellent birds vets here. Is he okay after the window crash?? That bleeding and sleepiness does not sound good to me at all. Edited June 9, 200816 yr by Chrysocome
June 9, 200816 yr This bird really needs to be diagnosed before any further treatment. It could be fungal/yeast infection, macrorhabdus ornithogaster? If that were so, antibiotics are not effective and in fact make it worse. The treatment for a fungal/yeast infection is fungillin lozenges 10mg, crush one tablet in 80mls of water fresh daily for 20 days.
June 9, 200816 yr Have you got a before and after photos .....Before he went to the vets and a Now photo ... I honestly believe that after 1 1/2years of being a pet, no matter how long you were gone he should still know that the window is there!!!! The sounds that he was familar with and especially routines of changing a cage, for him to sit there scared while you do your normal thing , these things just don't add up... If they can mistake babies at a hosptial I am sure a bird can be mistaken too
June 16, 200816 yr Author My mum is sick with renal failure and she doesn't remember anything some days. The antibiotics which was prescribed by the vet didn't not make any improvement on my little budgie . I am thinking he got trichomoniasis because he sits hours in front of the seeds feeder no movements most of the day. Anyone have had a budgie which got trichomoniasis and the budgie eyes were infected too? Thanks Eyal
June 16, 200816 yr Eyal, do you have a picture of your budgie right now? It might help us find out what is wrong. Does he have matted feathers on top of his head? Do you notice him regurgitating/vomiting? Does he scratch at his eye? I ask because I once saw a case where a lady brought in her bird thinking it had an eye infection. We did a crop flush and found Macrorhabda, a fungus, that was making him vomit. When birds vomit it goes into their mouth and they shake their head, so it ends up on their face. The vomit got in his eye and it was irritating him so he kept scratching at it. The scratching caused inflammation which caused more scratching and it went on like that. So Trich is a possibility as that makes them vomit too. Trich and Macrorhabda will not be affected by antibiotics. Your vet should do a crop flush and look at it under a microscope to find out if he has these. However, he might just not be eating because he feels sick. Edited June 16, 200816 yr by Chrysocome

July 8, 200816 yr That is great news. New birds won't eat in front of you because they are scared and may not start eating for 3 or 4 days.
July 8, 200816 yr He looks really nice. Keep and eye on his seed dish - you will find little husks in the top as he sneaks some food when you are not looking. As SW said, it's quite normal for a bird to not eat for the first few days at a new home - just try and make sure he doesn't get cold. a bird can die in the cold with no food to generate body heat. I normally give my newbies a millet spray that is pegged at perch level and at the spot where they tend to sit the most - this allows them to eat while feeling more comfortable
July 8, 200816 yr Author Also I always find I can tempt any picky eaters with a few celery leaves. His cage was on the floor on the carpet i didn't have a table to put his cage on because i ran to buy a cage when i got him after the auction. Yesterday i was thinking he was scared to eat but i was a bit worried as well i knew that might be because of a new home. I have decided to put him up for a while so he could see benjie the other budgie since i put him up he has had eye contact with Benjie and started eating. so good news thanks everyone.
