Posted May 20, 200816 yr Sorry, no pics.. but the afore mentioned shop I went to (in the other thread) kinda scared me a little. The budgies were big. Like, twice the size I am used to seeing. Twice the size of the four I have at the moment (though even Blueberry is slightly larger than the others and he's only a month or so old!). Some of these birds would be close to a foot long or more. Is this common? maybe a product of better nutrition, kind of like the new breed of lanky teenagers we get? When I was younger and had budgies I bought them from several sources and they were all the same size, I never had concern of the size of the birds. But now... well I actually don't want my budgies that big...
May 21, 200816 yr If you check out some of the show breeder here and thei pics of their budgies you will see that the show budgies are bigger and buffier then the pet budgies .
May 21, 200816 yr Author okay that makes sense. There were a number of show budgies in the cage. Where do show budgies come from (in a sense, how do you "make" them), because I want to avoid them... I don't know what possess people to call those things "show" budgies, as in my opinion , they are the least attractive type of budgie there is. My Shadow and Topaz are bootifal shortcuts please do not use shortcuts like IMO. Most shortcuts are not allowed on BBC Edited May 21, 200816 yr by KAZ
May 21, 200816 yr Awe, they are all in the eye of the beholder, I really loved my pet budgie Pretty and didn't really like the show much until I got Merlin he is the best showy budgie around I think, they are so much more calmer and mellow don't knock them until you have one, there really is no way to avoid them you just don't buy them if you don't want one just like if you want a mutt and not a purebred
May 21, 200816 yr Each to their own. I actually like these show budgies better than the pet ones. The way to avoid them is not buy the show types.
May 21, 200816 yr Show budgies are bred from show budgies. You can't get show budgies from a pet type. Show budgies are a very sought after and attractive bird which compete world wide. I wouldn't necessarily say they're unattractive, but they do take a bit of time to get used to the look... It grows on you...
May 21, 200816 yr Author That's fair enough... I did mention it was my very own opinion I like pet budgies because they are smallish, and that is also their natural state. I tend to like finches as well, but not so much the bigger birds like cockatiels and toos, and not just because they have bigger bite potential!
May 21, 200816 yr Looking back to the budgie types I started with and what I have now, the first budgies I had were tiny and they were "pinheads" . I still keep both pet and show types but my pet types now have a little more size and style about them, and better looking heads Edited May 21, 200816 yr by KAZ
May 21, 200816 yr I love the size of the show types and the smooth look of the pet types, so I have started to mix breed them to create big, docile, pretty and lovable pets Edited May 21, 200816 yr by **Liv**
May 21, 200816 yr Just to give some iddea of size the normal wild budgerigar is about 4.5 inches long (tahts tip to tail) whereas I have seen show budgies at 8.5 inches.

May 23, 200816 yr I've seen some budgies the size of cockateils here They must of been on steroids,or small cockateils.
May 23, 200816 yr Show budgies originated from wild budgies that were successively bred in captivity to enhance certain features that occurred as spontaneous mutations. This has taken many generations of selective breeding to achieve. If you are interested in breeding pygmy budgies, you can selectively breed the other way as well. You can create the appearance of budgies that you want, depending on what you start with. Chances are you will start with something that you like and continue breeding that, or you may decide to change it.
May 23, 200816 yr Scooter (right) is the smallest budgie i have - he is about 14-16cm long (including the tail) - I think he is a real cutie http://netsavvymums.com/personalpics/cookieacooter.jpg Edited May 24, 200816 yr by Rainbow
